March 2011 — "Since before the fire, my best friend has been raving of this place. I was forewarned that this was an authentic of authentic sushi places in town, with no fusion dishes. They have the normal sushi and sashimi options prepared in the most traditional ways. For the dinner menu, it didn't seem to have anything extra special, in regards to the menu and the dish that we both ordered - sushi and sashimi meal. And as some add ons, we had a highly recommended fried mushroom dish with some shrimp/seafood. It was alright. It tastes pretty similar to the Chinese fried Shrimp/crab claws. Apparently, it is very authentic, but I'm sorry to say, I don't really see it. I mean, the food was good but it crosses with many other restaurants of the same type at about the same caliber. It's fine that it doesn't have that Japanese fusion, but it should really have something else to give that added extra pull for the customer, or so I think. Mind you, the service was top notch and you could feel for a brief second like you are in Japan. My qualms are though, that the food variety should really be increased, the prices decreased. Waiting time for the food was alright, but I would still classify it under the slower range just because of what we ordered. I was also forewarned that the service is not the quickest. Lunch time is definitely a tight meal. I like the quiet, calm environment, but truthfully, there are other places I think I would consider, especially with the hiked up prices. "

"Delicious!! "

March 2010 — "I have been searching for a good sushi restaurant on the west end of downtown for quite awhile to no avail. Finally we found a place that we all enjoyed immensely!! We went as a group of eight for lunch and made a reservation and also pre-ordered. When we arrived we were shown to a cute little booth and our food started arriving within minutes. I personally ordered the small sashimi, as well as the Spicy Tekka roll and a California roll. I must say I was more the pleased with the quality of both the rolls and the sashimi. The rolls were very fresh and delicious and the sashimi (tuna, salmon and prawn) were mouthwatering. The service was very friendly and quick and I am SO happy to say that we may have just found our new favourite lunch sushi place!! "

"Yummy sushi in the core!"

September 2009 — "Sushi Hiro is your neighborly Japanese restaurant found in the downtown core. Excellent location to meet up with friends and coworkers for lunch! Although not much can be said about the simple décor of this restaurant, but the staff are friendly and the sushi chefs are always greeting with a smile. The menu is fairly basic and traditional so don’t expect to find fusion type dishes or much variation from your traditional sushi rolls. Being a regular customer, one should always make reservations to dine here, especially during weekday lunch. Food is always made fresh, however, when it comes to ordering sushi rolls, I find that the deliverance of these rolls to be a bit slow. One of my favorite dishes I like to order is their Chirashi Sushi ($13.50) which is a good portion size for a lunch meal. Sushi Hiro’s Chirashi Sushi contains various toppings such as salmon, tuna and scallop sashimi, shrimp, artificial crabmeat, tamago, strips of cucumbers, presented neatly on a bed of rice. Other favorite to try is the special scallop roll! "

"Good sushi but a bit overpriced"

September 2009 — "This is only my second time to Sushi Hiro but I am again impressed with their sushi and outstanding customer service. The restaurant seems to be Japanese owned and operated. When we arrived, we were immediately seated by a nice Japanese waitress and greeted by all the Japanese workers in the background. I ordered a dinner combo that came with teriyaki chicken, sashimi, miso soup, and a bowl of rice for $19.95. The portions were generally quite small, especially the sashimi. However, the fish was really fresh. The teriyaki chicken came on a sizzling stone hot plate, which kept it warm. It was quite tasty and on par with other Japanese restaurants. The miso soup was hot and good as usual. Although the meal was pretty decent, it was too small and not very filling. I wouldn’t say this restaurant is good value but it does offer a great selection of food, good service and decent food, so it’s definitely worth checking out."

"Awesome Shabu Shabu, Great Service"

August 2009 — "Sushi Hiro is a nice little Japanese restaurant located off of 5th Avenue SW in downtown Calgary. I came here on a Friday night in search of good food with my boyfriend. We were immediately greeted by the nice Japanese waitress and brought to our table. This restaurant is much bigger in size than most Japanese restaurants in town with a choice of regular table seating and Japanese style booths. We ordered shabu shabu, which costs $21 per person. If you're not familiar with this dish, it's similar in style to Chinese hot pot with a few variations. They bring a portable gas range to your table with a cast iron pot on top filled with water. The dish comes with uncooked chinese cabbage, shitake mushrooms, inoki mushrooms, sliced carrots and green onions, soft tofu, glass noodles and thinly sliced beef arranged nicely on separate plates. To top it off, you get a bowl of rice and dipping sauce per person. First, they wait for the water to boil and then they come back and start you off by putting some of the raw ingredients into the pot to show you how the dish works. The service here was a delight and truly exceptional. The food was also so fresh and satisfying. I have yet to try out the sushi here but I highly recommend this restaurant for the shabu shabu."

"Good Sushi but..."

June 2009 — " This is a popular restaurant for the downtown lunch crowd, and the service was fairly good considering we came at the end of the lunch hour rush. The interior is simple with clean lines and pale wood. But the sushi, while good, is not special in any way. In addition, several things we tried to order (edamame etc.) were only available during the dinner hours. The presentation of the sushi was also simple and not remarkable. For a lunchtime sushi quick fix it’s fine, but I doubt we’d go back for dinner. "

"Some of the freshest sushi in the city"

April 2006 — "I'm a big fan of Sushi Hiro. Each time I have been there, the seafood has been incredibly fresh, giving that "melt in your mouth" experience that all sushi meals should entail. There is a great selection of sushi, sashimi and cooked meals and the sushi chefs are entertaining and experienced. I have had a lot of sushi from a lot of different places and I would have to say that Hiro is one of Calgary's best."
