"Sushi Recommended"

March 2010 — "A group of me and my girlfriends drove to Edmonton to visit our friends and their baby for the weekend. After debating for what felt like hours as to where we should go for dinner, we ended up here for sushi. It's weird that I really like sushi but I'm never sure what it is that I like. That's why I appreciate a restaurant with a really good sushi combo so I don't have to pick. Fortunately, since there were several of us, we ordered multiple sushi platters and shared them among us all. The place was quite busy when we arrived and we had to wait for a while to be seated. They were very accommodating though with the baby and were quite prompt in providing service. The food came out somewhat delayed but it was relatively good. Prices were quite reasonable, the exact numbers I'm unsure of as our friends treated us. Overall, a pretty good experience and I would recommend trying this place out of you're looking for a place for sushi."

"Good Sushi "

February 2010 — "Our trip to Edmonton consisted of a yummy dinner at Kyoto’s. I don’t know if I could say that it is different from any other Japanese restaurant I have been to, but I do think it does reach fresh, quality sushi. We had a full table filled with various types of rolls, a full boat, with an extra Mexican roll and some cones. Nothing too complicated, but enjoyable. I have to comment on the cones when they are done at a better quality restaurant because usually, they will give you a rice cone, with a piece of fish or seafood that you ordered, but Kyoto had a good amount of fish, making it very tasty and satisfying. I really like the calm atmosphere of the place and the ambiance. It’s not a huge place, but it caters to a good number of people. Their booths can only really fit about 6 people, but there are more private rooms and tables around the floor. It is not my first time, and the last time we went, it was a pretty full house as well. I would recommend this place if you are in search of some sushi."

"Cute decor and relatively inexpensive."

July 2009 — "Kyoto Japanese Cuisine is located on 109th Street just south of the river. This place is quite popular, particularly among the university folks, and is a pretty good place to go for sushi. In my opinion, the food is not outstanding, as some people may claim, but the atmosphere and the service was certainly a bonus. They have these really cute little private rooms that are designed to give the appearance that you are sitting on the floor in a traditional Japanese style, which I actually found a little hokey. We had the tempura, which was nicely battered and very tasty. We also shared the Spicy Tuna and California rolls, both of which were excellent. The restaurant is relatively inexpensive for sushi, which can sometimes be overpriced in Edmonton. We were there at dinner time and it wasn’t terribly busy but I’ve heard it can fill up pretty fast at lunch time."

"Best Place for Maki"
Image

Save Review

June 2009 — "The one characteristic that sets Kyoto Restaurant apart from the rest of Edmonton’s Japanese restaurants is their maki rolls. With over a dozen maki rolls to choose from, you can easily satisfy your cravings and fill your stomach. The Mexican maki is one of my favorites, which are made up of spicy tuna, avocado and cucumber, rolled with black sesame sprinkled rice. Other favorites also include chop chop maki (scallop, mayonnaise and tobiko), and their eye catching rainbow roll (shrimp tempura roll wrapped in a variety of thinly sliced fish). Their appetizers are enjoyable as well. Scallops in missionaise sauce (a creamy but slightly tangy Japanese sauce) served on a half shell is rich but delicious, beef tataki (thinly sliced seared beef in ponzu sauce), and grilled octopus with mango sauce are also pleasant. The tatami rooms are a nice touch as they add privacy to your experience. Service is acceptable but inconsistent, as it ranges from professional and courteous, to inexperienced and rushed. "

"Great for lunch!"

March 2009 — "My classmates and I go here for lunch once a month or so, and always enjoy their bento lunch special. For 10 bucks, one definitely can't complain about how much food you get! The tatami rooms are really nice, and if you get stuck sitting at the sushi bar, the chefs strike up conversation with you. I like the atmosphere....oh, and the food's good too. "

"Changed Indeed"

October 2008 — "My wife and I used to love this place. The food was fabulous, and it became our sushi place of choice in 2006 and 2007. But several visits over the course of 2008 have driven us away. Smaller portions, poorly-constructed maki, much worse rice - something seemed to be going wrong. In the end, our favorite dish - their signature kyoto roll - became the barometer. The first time we got a tepid roll, falling apart, with the sauce haphazardly applied, we attributed it to an off night. The second time, we wondered if the cooks had changed. The third time, we decided not to come back anymore."

January 2008 — "My husband and I went to Kyoto on January 5, 2008 for lunch. We have previously visited this restaurant and have always loved the food. On this day, we both ordered Bento Box lunches and a side order of California Rolls. The California Rolls that arrived looked nothing like any other California rolls we had seen. They were made with what looked like tuna in mayonaise and not crab or even crab salad. We both tasted one piece each and neither one of us liked it. We put the pieces we had sampled to the side and did not eat any more of them. The waitress (who turned out to be the manager) came and took away the full plate without any comment. We then tried the Bento boxes. Both my husband's beef and my chicken were tasteless and cold. "

"Fresh Sushi, Intimate Traditional Atmosphere"
Image

Save Review

October 2007 — "Kyoto Japanese Cuisine is located on 109th Street and 87th Avenue, a few blocks east of the university campus. From the outside, this restaurant looks sub-par and pedestrians walking by probably wouldn’t give it a second glance. Although, once you enter the restaurant, the soothing Japanese music and calming ambiance quickly clear your mind of any doubts you might have had about dining here. Within the restaurant there are a variety of seating areas, all of which are intimate and cozy. Most of the tables are located within their own little room, making for a very intimate dining experience. This seating arrangement could cause problems for people with limited mobility because getting yourself into the seats takes some maneuvering. (There are normal tables available, although they don’t provide the same atmosphere). For an appetizer we ordered tempura, as well, they provide complimentary miso soup. It came quickly and tasted delicious. For the main course, I had the vegetable and Mexican sushi. Both kinds were great and were made from fresh produce. The only complaint I have, was that our waitress was slow and forgetful. We asked multiple times for water refills but never received them. Despite this, I will definitely go back to this sushi restaurant and I highly recommend it. In terms of cost, this place was quite cheap. It was about $10/person for a sushi dish and split-appetizer."
