December 2010 — "Compared to any of the other Indian restaurants in Victoria, Spicejammer is the best. After having travelled all over India for over 30 years, I think I know good Indian food, and the Spicejammer is superb."

March 2009 — "Wow. Hands-down, this is THE BEST Indian restaurant I have EVER eaten at. Family owned and operated, the Spice Jammer has been a mainstay in Victoria for almost 20 years. We had the honour of chatting with one of the daughter’s who was more than happy to share stories of the restaurant, the origin of the name and the differences in food between regions of India. It turns out her family is from Kenya, and therefore the food is a blend of African and Indian, making the flavourful and aromatic food lighter and less oily (as it is not grounded in Ghee), and the presence of creamy coconut abounds in a number of dishes. Her father acquired the restaurant when it was called the Wind Jammer (I think) and he changed it to Spice Jammer because of the spices sailing across the seas. We started with “Appy Hour”, where we were given a choice of several beers, house wine or a double-chocolate porter beer to be enjoyed with either a vegetable samosa or pakora for a mere $5. We were seated in the cozy “lounge” in overstuffed chairs where we could sit by the fountain or gaze out the window. That little samosa convinced us we had to stay for a full meal! I don’t think I’ve ever tasted such a light and crispy samosa. The décor is dark, warm with burnt reds and cream coloured walls, with salt crystals glowing with candles on each table and sultry Indian music playing in the background. Although the fake plants separating the tables take away a bit from the ambiance, they cleverly create the allusion of privacy. We appealed to the daughter to assist us with choosing 2 main dishes so that we could take advantage of her knowledge. After asking us a number of questions, she narrowed our meal down to a creamy coconut curry chicken, and medium spicy prawn masala, complete with a side of Indian rice. The cream balanced the spiciness of the the masala, and the chicken and prawns were tender and delicious. What a feast! My coffee was excellent, as was the house wine, and we finished off our evening with a sweet and spicy Indian ice cream made in-house. Hats off to this family; if you are ever in Victoria I would HIGHLY recommend this humble little restaurant on Fort after you’ve wandered around the harbour. The prices are about ½ of what you would pay on the waterfront and it is only a few blocks away (for appies and beer, several wines, 2 main dishes and rice, coffee, and a shared dessert, we paid around $70). Do something nice for yourself and try this little place out – I’m sure you won’t be disappointed. "
