September 2011 — "Generally, I won't eat anyone's schnitzel but my own. But Jonas' are sublime. They are thin and cooked fast so melt in your mouth. Also, I love spaetzle but never make them just for myself. Theirs are outstanding - just the way I love them. I have gone there with a number of different people and everyone loves the food and the service. It truly is a hidden gem - great food, great atmosphere, great people and great prices.

September 2011 — "After spending a bit of time in Hungary and thoroughly enjoying the food, I was excited to check out Jonas downtown, a small mom and pop restaurant which has received rave reviews from my colleagues. It's a cozy little restaurant with all kinds of decorations and artwork from Hungary on the walls, featuring specialities of the Hungarian cuisine. They have daily specials from $11.50 to $16.50, and then an a la carte including salads, soups, and entrees and pasta dishes. They even have some vegetarian dishes. I chose the small bowl of Chicken Noodle soup ($3.50) and the Pasta with Feta Cheese served with Dill ($4.50). A nice rich bread is served with jalepeno peppers and butter to start. I really enjoyed my lunch and the service was terrific. This restaurant is spotless and the food was plentiful. I highly recommend this restaurant if you are looking for authentic Hungarian cuisine. June 2011 — "You never know what to expect from a restaurant along the c-train line but this did not disappoint at all. It was authentic Hungarian and walking in there felt like being in Hungary. All staff spoke Hungarian, a few patrons spoke Hungarian, there was Hungarian music playing and Hungarian dresses hanging on the walls.
The really nice server brought me some slices of bread with butter and slices of fresh jalapeno on the side. I wasn't sure what the jalapeno was for but assumed it was to be eaten with the bread. The jalapeno still had the seeds in it so it was HOT. I got it all over my fingers and ultimately in my eye which brought on the tears. Chalk it up to a learning experience. Save the jalapenos for when the meal arrives.
There was a few chicken liver dishes on the menu that I stayed clear from. I ordered the beef stew served with ribbon pasta, sour cream, feta cheese and dill. The large was $14.50 and it stuffed me up. I loved the sour cream topping the beef stew which was smothered in a spicy red stew sauce all on a bed of pasta. The fresh dill was a brilliant touch too.
You won't regret this place. Give it a try! "

June 2008 — "Jonas' is low-key, understated, and homey. Very simple menu, only a few choices, but enough selection to fit everyone in your party, and keep you coming back a few times to try the other dishes. I am Hungarian and the dishes don't disappoint.. also stays true to what they serve in Hungary today - so yes, if you're expecting a huge, varied salad haha that just doesn't happen in Hungary.. a few cucumber slices is the real deal and that's exactly what you'll find at Jonas'. Unfortunately Hungarian restaurants are slim pickings in Calgary, so definitely try it if you haven't before. I just wish they'd expand their premises and I'd also love to see more dinner and dessert options on the menu koszonom szepen.. :) "

August 2006 — "This is a hidden gem in Calgary! It has a very low-profile location, and we were surprised to see it nearly empty at 6:30 on a Friday evening. The delicious soups and entrees were very reasonably priced, of high quality, and there is nothing comparable in Calgary. The dessert crepes were delicate, rich and amusingly decorated with sprinkles reminiscent of a child's birthday party!
We enjoyed the liver dumpling soup, very original, as well as the bean goulash soup which was rich and warm comfort food. The cucumber and yogurt salad was light and refreshing. The schnitzel was very generously portioned, crisp and tender and not at all greasy or overly breaded. It came with delectable potatoes. The Friday night special was a unique potato pancake stuffed with beef paprikash - exceptional! The only dim light in this otherwise exceptional meal was the choice of vegetable. It was just regular frozen peas/carrots/corn/lima beans. Very bland and boring instead of inspired and flavourful like the rest of the meal.
The Bull's Blood wine went very well with this meal. The service was gracious, kind and homey, but also professional. The washrooms were clean and accessible. The Hungarian music was delightful - energetic but not overbearing.
We'll definitely be back to try other nightly specials as well as the chicken paprikash, cabbage rolls and more! EXCELLENT food and EXCEPTIONAL VALUE! "

June 2006 — "This restaurant is one of my favourites in Calgary. I go every couple of months and am consistently pleased with the friendly service, cozy ambience and delicious food. You can really taste the care and preparation that goes into each dish. Their chicken paprikash is rich and creamy and served over spaeztle (little dumplings). The schnitzel is both crispy and tender - just the way it is meant to be - and with two giant pieces on your plate you will never leave hungry. All of their very generously sized entrees are $7 - $11 each. A bottle of Hungarian "Bull's Blood" wine at $25 is also an excellent choice.
Save some room for dessert, as they make tasty crepes, filled with sweet lemon cheese, apricot jam or hazelnuts and chocolate.
Be sure to make a reservation, especially on Friday and Saturday, as there aren't many tables and they fill quickly with regulars."
