October 2011 — "While we went to this restaurant by accident, from the moment we walked in, we were quite charmed by the staff and atmosphere. A restaurant that only fits 40 people at a time, it is elegant and simple at the same time. While neither of us had been feeling terribly hungry, after having the price fixe described, my husband decided on the four course meal, and described the french onion soup as the best of his entire life. My main of the pork tenderloin was an excellent cut of meat. Then, we shared his dessert, the creme brulee. Evidently their signature dessert, it came in a spun sugar cage, and was delicious to the last bite. A wonderful dining experience that I will recommend to all."

December 2009 — "Matisse is a fine dining French restaurant situated on Yates Street in downtown Victoria. They have won 4 star awards for the last 10 years so it sounds very prestigious so we made sure we were well dressed for our meal. The restaurant is small and intimate, there is soft French music in the background, the lighting is discreet and there is nice art on the walls. The service is very professional but not rushed and it is the type of restaurant where you go and spend a relaxing evening. Our server was excellent and recommended his favourite items on the menu as well as the specials that were available. I started with the soup which was a potato leek which was excellent and chose the beef tenderloin with foie gras butter, red wine and black truffle sauce. My spouse chose the duck while my mother in law went with the oven roasted rack of lamb. All our meals were excellent; my beef was cooked perfectly although my portion was on the smaller side. The food is not cheap, my meal was $32 but I felt it was worth it. One of the owners of the restaurant was visiting with the tables, taking orders and chatting to guests throughout the evening. It seemed many of the guests were returning clients but my mother in law was a bit put out that the owner seemed to ignore our table until the end of the evening when we were leaving. We will have to go back so we can become regulars but I think I will ask someone else if they are willing to pay."
