February 2010 — "When Jasper folks talk about Happy Hour, they're almost certainly talking about heading down to The Ded Dog on a Friday night. It's become legendary, particularly in the winter when there aren't as many tourists in town. The scene has grown so popular at the Ded Dog—which is affixed to the Astoria Hotel—because the Ded Dog is so consistent. The food is good, the drinks are fairly priced and the ambiance has mountain town written all over it. In fact, the room's largest wall is adorned with photographs of locals who have passed away. It sounds macabre but it pays homage to how Jasper folk work and play hard, even if the risks prove fatal. The wings at the Ded Dog have always been a favourite of mine, the giant nacho platter a close second. Hey, this is pub food we're talking about! Healthy options prevail, however, with the Root Romp Salad (named after a local running race) being a particular root-veggie fave. With all the camaraderie that having a pint at the "Dog" can create, it's hard not to like this pub. For a truly local experience, visit on a Friday. But just be sure to get there early."
