January 2011 — "Sushi Kawa was a restaurant we stumbled on, on our way to look for Towa, located on 4th street SW. I must say, I was pretty impressed and really quite enjoyed the sushi. I eat a lot, and the meal was definitely able to satisfy this reviewer! They had all the normal rolls and some specials advertised around the restaurant. I loved that there was a bento box special that had more choices than just the normal sushi, sashimi, tempura, and or teriyaki. I had a spicy dish with tuna and some really good assortments of everything - sushi, rice, soup, cooked chicken and along with our box, me and my friend also indulged in some appetizers. Very good and the best part was the service and the authenticity of the environment. I think I spent half the time talking to my friend and half the time watching the sumo on the tv screens throughout the restaurant. "

"Interesting Udon"

September 2010 — "I’ve tried Kawa’s lunch box combo in the past, but recently I dropped by here on a rainy day and ordered something different; the curry udon soup. Less a soup and more a stew with noodles, this menu item was the perfect meal for a cold day. The curry broth had a rich thick texture reminiscent of a hearty stew or steak soup while the noodles added that little extra heft to make it feel like a true meal. If you’ve never eaten in at Sushi Kawa, you should definitely try it, at least once; if only for the chance to watch old sumo wrestling matches on the television inside the dining room. It certainly adds to the experience. Finally, the service at Kawa is cheerful and considering how busy it usually is there during lunch hour, they do a good job of making sure your tea never runs out and your food is delivered promptly. "Yum!"

March 2010 — "I was a little worried when my friends and I showed up without a reservation at this busy sushi place on a Saturday night, but they found us a table right away. Service was a bit of a different issue -- it took quite a while to get served and when we did, it took ages for the food to come but they seemed quite busy. Seeing as this restaurant has such a great location, it's not surprising that the prices are a bit steep, but it wasn't anything unreasonable. They had a few dinner specials on the menu -- I had the sashimi one, which was really fresh and good. We also ordered some special rolls, which were really great. The portions seemed huge to me, but my friend ordered a family platter just for himself and managed to eat it all so I guess it just depends on your appetite. The ambiance and vibe are great!"

"Satisfying Superb Sushi"

October 2009 — "Sushikawa is a favorite Calgary sushi restaurant for several reasons. First of all, the sushi’s delicious, always fresh and fun to order with the help of the menu photos. There’s the unpretentious atmosphere in modern yet not stark surroundings, with sumo wrestlers plying their sport on a corner tv (don’t worry, you can sit facing the other way if it’s not your thing!). And we love the happy service (they’re always smiling). Even our ginger and wasabi lust is tolerated, the servers bring extra without a blink. The traditional rolls are great, especially the spicy rolls (we like the Kamikaze spicy maki) which have delicate touches of spicy tastes that pack power - yet somehow the flavor of the seafood isn’t suffocated. Although we mainly go for sushi, on occasion we’ve tried the cooked dinner items which are pleasing as well, particularly the tempura dishes. "

"Most selection! Best for new sushi-eaters (and experienced too)"

November 2008 — "I have been to Sushi Kawa numerous times and will often go out of my way to go there. Reservations are a must if you're set on it -- it's often full, especially on weekend evenings. Some of the wait staff have been there for many years and they're adorable, their greetings and goodbyes reminding me of my time in Tokyo. This restaurant is the best of urban-Japanese decor fusion with exposed brick and a modern feel mixed with traditional Japanese touches. It's not especially cozy but it's visually appealing. I love that they show sumo on a bigscreen tv. The menu is absolutely amazing and best for first-time sushi tasters -- it's full of pictures and selections (pictures are very common in Tokyo menus, aiding the international crowd). This is one of the few places that serves ume sushi (plum) and their spicy salmon sushi maki roll is to die for. Also try some plum wine or liquer! This place is awesome on summer evenings as the windows all open onto the wonderfully busy 4th Street - also good for people watching. I highly recommend it and you won't break your bank."
