March 2012 — "There's a couple decent sit down restaurants in the Calgary airport. Montana's is just outside security on the departures level. It's out of the way so it's quiet and not very busy. The airport is extremely bright but Montana's, by contrast, is a dark pit. Despite the unseemly dark atmosphere, the place is clean and the staff are friendly. The menu is decidedly western in theme. I was in the mood for a traditional chicken dinner. I ordered the BBQ Rotisserie Quarter Chicken dinner for $12. The chicken was as good as those served at other restaurants but the BBQ sauce was better than any gravy. The cornbread was a bit dry still tasty. The coleslaw was unremarkable. Overall, I was happy with the meal. It was more than I could finish. There's nothing special about this Montana's but since it's in the airport they take your order, make your food, and bring your bill very quickly."

"Not a great breakfast"

March 2012 — "We arrived early at the YYC airport and wanted to grab a solid meal before our flight out. There were 8 of us dining early on a Saturday morning and Montanas seemed to be one of the only choices. So we headed in. We were the only ones in the restaurant. And we mentioned that we waiting for a flight. Hence....you need to hurry. Our waiter was slower than molasses. Which irritated us all but eventually our food did indeed come out. Our dishes were all just ok. Average I would say. But I guess it hit the spot. We had to ask for the bill and then chase down the server so that we could pay. You would think that being in an airport people would be prepared for this. But apparently not. If we ever had to grab breakfast there again I would probably take a pass and stick to this place when you are not in a hurry. "

"Great family BBQ joint"

November 2011 — "I have been to Montana's a few times before and have always had a pretty good meal and time. This particular date, it was a later lunch and the food was prompt and very tasty. The buffalo chicken sandwich was very filling and quite spicy. My friends got the ribs and said they were great. Throughout the meal, there were a few birthday celebrations where at Montana's you get a song and get to wear the coveted and infamous antler hat. I would recommend for a family outing, birthday celebration or business casual lunch."

"Delicious"

October 2011 — "My boyfriend chose to go to Montana's for his birthday dinner and despite the fact that he chose to be a poor sport and not wear the awesome moosehead and have servers chant "It's your birthday, it's your birthday..." we had a great dinner! It also helped that there were a large portion of tables in the restaurant celebrating birthdays so he got to birthday treatment indirectly. Our server was amazing, very friendly and on top of everything. My steak was cooked to perfection, it does help that in their menu they specify what their version of medium, well and rare are so you can ensure you are ordering it to your preference. The potatoes and gravy were also delicious, although my gravy was a tad lumpy. I didn't care too much for the side of corn or the mound of weird onion things they gave me. All was well however as I had enough food to be more than satisfied, had I eaten the other sides that I wasn't so fond of I probably would have exploded anyhow. Even my boyfriend who can eat a lot was stuffed after eating some of the Ka-Pow shrimp as a started and getting the small brisket sandwich. Definitely a good place to go for your meat and potato style dinner! "

"Airport Location"

October 2011 — "When waiting for my family to arrive, my wife and I stopped in at the Montana's Cookhouse in the Calgary International Airport. It was around 9pm on a Saturday night and we chose to sit in the lounge because they were playing the Flames game. The place was pretty dead. There were just a few tables in the restaurant and about five people in the bar. Or server greeted us and took our order pretty quickly. I decided to get the chicken quesadilla, which was a pretty good size. It came with salsa and sour cream. It wasn't the best one I had ever had, but it hit the spot. My wife had the NY Steak Sandwich. It looked pretty good and she seemed to enjoy it but I was too full from my quesadilla to try it. Overall, the experience was pleasant, the service was pretty good and the atmosphere with the game on was good. If I'm at the airport waiting for someone, I will not hesitate to stop at this Montana's."

"Bad Birthday Experience"

September 2011 — "We went to Montana's for my birthday on a Thursday night and it was very disappointing to say the least. The service from start to end was a complete miss and an epic failure. It seemed the whole time we kept getting a new server, and they couldn't figure out what was what, mixed up orders, brought out things we didn't order, and were very slow. It took about 25 minutes to seat us, even though we had a reservation. When we were ready to order, it took about another 20 minutes to have anyone even come say hello to us. The night continued on in this fashion with our food taking over an hour to get to us. The restaurant appeared to be severely understaffed. We were really not impressed with the service we received and will never be going back. The all you can eat ribs were as well a let down. The Quality of the ribs poor, and the appetizers, and side dishes over cooked, and unimpressive. "

"Good choice in the Crowfoot area"

May 2011 — "There are a few Montana's in Calgary. The one I visited was located in NW Calgary in the Crowfoot outdoor strip mall across from Schanks and the theatre. There are plenty of choices in and around the Crowfoot area such as Joey Tomatoes and Tony Romas within a few steps away. We decided to try out Montanas as the lineups in the other restaurants in this area are frequently long without reservations. Montanas became a pleasant surprise as there was plenty of seating. There is also a lounge area if you don't mind a few sports games going on in the background. The service was very friendly and prompt. We tried a calamari as an appetizer which was smaller than I expected but tasty nonetheless. I had a pulled pork sandwich while my friend decided on an 8 ounce steak. We were also able to pick from a few available side dishes. My sandwich was very tender and much better than I had expected. While I wasn't able to try the steak the portions were certainly generous. It's a good alternative to the many other choices in the Crowfoot strip mall."

"Good BBQ Chicken"

March 2011 — "The beauty of chain restaurants is that they are the same everywhere you go. There are rarely any surprises and you usually get what you expect. Well, the same goes for the relatively new Montana’s in Beacon Hill. It was bustling with activity the evening we went but there was only a two minute wait to be seated. Service was peppy and we had our drinks order taken and delivered in less than five minutes. My eternal struggle with Montana’s is what to eat as nothing from their menu really calls out to me. I ordered the Quarter BBQ Rotisserie Chicken for only $12 before tax and tip. Just as good as Swiss Chalet (without the special sauce), the chicken was moist, the coleslaw tangy and the cornbread was fresh. I recommend getting it cooked in BBQ sauce rather than plain as it adds a bit of zing to it. If you’ve never been there before it is a bit loud, especially when the wait staff sings a birthday song."

"Great place for kids"

March 2011 — "With one of my son's wanting to try something different. We were in the Westhills area in Calgary, and I let him choose the restaurant. He decided on Montana's Cookhouse. It was a Saturday at approx. 1:00 pm when we got there. The restaurant was fairly empty and we were seated promptly. They provided a kids menu for my son and regular menu for myself. I decided on the BBQ Brisket sandwich, and my son settled for the cheese pizza. The food arrived within 15 minutes. My BBQ Beef brisket was excellent and very tasty. My son was also very happy with his cheese pizza. For $6.99 his kids meal also came with a drink, and desert. He chose to have the 2 ice cream cones for desert. This came neatly in mini cones and in a holder. He thoroughly enjoyed this, primarily the presentation. All together, I found Montana's to be a great place to bring kids and have a decent meal that does not consist of fast food type of food. I will definitely be back with the rest of the family."

"New Years Eve Lunch!"

December 2010 — "My brother-in-laws birthday is on New Years Eve and it is always a bit tricky to find some place that will house us all for lunch with out a reservation! We got right into Montanas in Westhills and will defiantly have to do that again from now on! There were 9 of us in the party and drinks and menus were offered right off the bat. Always a bonus in my books - I hate waiting for drinks! We all order pretty quickly, and our food was out fast. Everyone seemed fine with their food - if I had one complaint about Montanas its that it is just - meh - nothing is really fantastic it is just really quite average. Being it was his birthday, they did make him put on the moose ears and the entire staff sang Happy Birthday to him - that was funny! We will go back, even thought the food is just average. The service is good and its a good place to go with kids. Happy New Year!"

December 2010 — "I know that most people don't go to a place that is famous for ribs and order fish and chips, but that's exactly what I did. The Montana's at the Calgary Airport is the best location I have ever eaten at. The service was extremely fast and the staff were really friendly. To top it all off, the fish and chips were amazing! I couldn't believe my eyes! Two of the biggest pieces of golden fried fish atop a mountain of fries, all for only $12!! I would definitely order it again. I had a pint of Canadian which seemed a bit flat and the server replaced it for me without a problem. The restaurant was a bit dark and the seating was a bit uncomfortable but the most important part, the service and the food, were right on spot! I think I will definitely be back if I'm waiting for a flight in the YYC! "

December 2010 — "Montana's at the Calgary Airport has really good food and really good service as well. Being that people are in the airport to catch flights, they understand that time is usually of the essence. We were able to order, eat our food, pay our bill and be out in all less than an hour. I can't comment on the drinks as I only had water, but the food was delicious. I ordered the "Chicken Philly Cheese" with a side caesar salad. The sandwich was huge and messy and smothered in bbq sauce. It was almost a cross between a philly cheese steak and a pulled pork sandwich. Purely awesome! The salad was fresh and crisp and the dressing was delicious! What a great meal. The only thing I didn't like was the booth we were sitting in. It was made of thin wood to look rustic, but sitting on it I felt as though I was eating in a summer camp mess hall! Not very pleasant. Great place to grab a quick meal! "

"Great steak, poor service"

November 2010 — "At Montana's, you kind of get what you would expect from a big restaurant chain; the food is generally pretty good but the experience can be pretty cookie cutter. When we arrived, it took quite awhile for us to be seated, although there were plenty of tables available. No one seemed to think it was there job. The service pretty much remained that way for our entire meal. Our food took forever to arrive and we sat around waiting for the bill at the end of the meal. I will say though that the food was pretty good. I ordered the top sirloin served with grilled shrimp. It was cooked exactly as I asked and was a really good piece of meat. The shrimp were surprisingly large and really delicious! The fries were crisp and there was tons of them. I kind of liked the atmosphere of the place too. It's kind of done up to feel like a mountain lodge or log cabin or something. Kind of cool. Definitely a family oriented restaurant. Had the service been better, I would probably go back. "

November 2010 — "I went to Montana's with my boyfriend because a friend of mine said they had gone for her husband's birthday and that it was really good. She was right. The good was definitely good. The service, however, was not. The service we received at Montana's pretty much put a damper on the entire experience. Our server was never around when we needed her, it took forever to be greeted when we walked in, and the bill, drinks and food were very slow to arrive. I ordered the bbq chicken and chose the apple butter bbq sauce. Very impressive! The chicken was juicy and flavorful and my baked potato was delicious as well. Montana's makes GREAT cornbread too! They have a great family atmosphere and I also thought it was a nice place for a date. The only problem is that we couldn't seem to take our focus from how poor the service was! Yikes!"

"Decent food, but worth the price?"

October 2010 — "Wanting to get something to eat prior to my flight out of Calgary, I decided that I had the time for a sit down meal. The Montana's at the Calgary airport was conveniently located, and there was no issue getting a seat. When I reviewed the menu, it appeared that they were known for their ribs. Needing to decide between the pork or beef ribs, I opted for the 2 beef ones. This was accompanied with my choice of a side, which I selected garlic mashed potatoes with gravy. The server was attentive and courteous. I did find it somewhat hokey that he wrote his name down on the paper that covered the table. It's not that I really care or wanted to remember it. All I really care for is good service. The food arrived quite quickly and I was surprised by the large size of the 2 ribs. I selected the Texas bold sauce for the ribs. My personal preference would have been to have more sauce on the ribs, but they were decent and quite tasty. They were also very tender. The 2 ribs were more than enough for me and filled me up. The cost of the 2 beef ribs came to almost $28 (not including tax). I did find it somewhat pricey and still question whether it was worth the money. Nonetheless, I did leave there with a full belly and content."

"Worst Service Ive had in years.."

June 2010 — "I wanted to take my husband somewhere he could get a pile of tasty ribs for his Birthday dinner. It needed to be family friendly as we were bringing our daughter and had invited some other families as well. I had troubles making reservations in the first place for a group of our size. They made it seem on the phone it would be a huge imposition on their part to accommodate us. I spoke with the manager about a week before our reservation and he made the arrangements. Arriving to the restaurant was pure chaos. We showed up a little bit early, and their was no signs of our reservations. Needless to say it took them a long time to set our tables up which should have already been done. After the frustration, and being on my husbands birthday sadly, we finally sat down. We waited for others to arrive, and somehow not everyone made it there that night. Our waitress treated us rudely the entire time. It seemed she was mad and so was everyone else we had made a stink about getting a big table and not all our invites showing up to the party. (Clearly not our fault) The food took forever to arrive, it was a complete gong show from the start. Please consider not going to Montana's in Signal Hill Sw of Calgary, if you have thought of doing so. As I received the worst service there of all time!"

December 2009 — "Decided to try Montana's. Commercial's looked good.......looks can be deceiving. I knew what I wanted and was looking forward to having the 8oz sirloin steak topped with 3 cheeses. Apparently there were no 8oz steaks available. They ran out the night before. So if you wanted a steak you had to buy the 12oz and pay more. I can't eat 12oz of meat and they were not willing to comprimize and eat the extra charge to make a customer happy. This was my first time.............and my very last. The adventure continues. I ended up ordering the fish and chips and the starter ceasar salad.......this was so small and I was shocked when I got it. They shouldn't even charge for this small portion. Then when the waitress was serving our meals my son almost had his meal dumped into in lap. Three of us had fries and we never did get any ketchup and the fish and chips were awfull. There was so much batter I could hardly find the fish. The fries were soggy. I told the waitress and was still charged for a horrible dinner.......I ended up going home and having supper. Absolutely terrible and I would never recommend anyone to this horrible establishment. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY. "

November 2009 — "We went to Montana's recently cause we were tired and didn't want to cook. It was pretty busy there probably because they had their all you can eat ribs night. But we didn't want to stuff ourselves and just ordered regular entrees. Not sure if that was the reason why our food took a little long. They sat in the lounge so it's not as busy and no loud kids. Plus we got to watch the hockey games while we wait so that was kinda nice. Our waiter was a younger guy that must've know one of the tables since he was always sitting down with them to chat. But he was pretty much the only waiter and it took us a while to be able to order. I had a sirloin steak dinner which was not bad. Nothing special though. Took me a while to get a steak knife though. This is one of the few places we've been to that doesn't give you bread while you waited though. Other than the slower service, the experience was good and the prices wasn't too bad. But Montana's won't be our first choice if we decide to go out for dinner next time. "

"Montana's still good despite menu changes"
Image

September 2009 — "Montana's recently changed their menu to include a number of "healthier options", but that nonsense aside, it's still a good place and the prices have remained reasonable (around $35 for two people). They've added dishes like Mediterranean chicken and stuffed mushroom chicken, but I still like the old-fashioned herb-roasted chicken with garlic mashed potatoes and fresh veggies. Luckily, they haven't taken that dish off the menu, but I guess in keeping with the healthy stuff, they no longer serve cornbread with it. I'm actually alright with that, I never liked it anyway, but my girlfriend was inconsolable when it didn't arrive on her plate. Disappointments..... But that was the only one. I've been to the Crowfoot Circle location a few times and although it wasn't as busy this time, the service was still quick and professional. These guys have the system down and the chicken dinners came out within minutes, tasty as always. I hope Montana's doesn't change too much more. It's good food at a good price and there aren't a lot of places that can say that. "

August 2009 — "I decided to try Montana's for the first time last month because I was told that their food was quite good. I was happy with the service as well as the atmosphere of the restaurant. The atmosphere is quite casual and reminds me of being in a log cabin. Both my boyfriend and I had the ribs. I chose the pork ribs while he went for the beef ribs and we were both really happy with our meals. They give you a variety of sauces to chose from, so you can customize your order for you, which I really liked. They also give you a wide variety of choices for sides, which was nice. The portions are massive too. We both were able to take enough home for left overs. Since our original visit we have been back several times for the ribs. Maybe one day I will have to try something else on their menu. If you are looking for good ribs I recommend Montana's"

"Good Dinner Menu"

February 2009 — "Montana’s in Crowfoot Centre is one of those places where you can usually count on a good dinner. The last time I went was no exception; however the service could have been a bit better. After viewing the menu I settled on the tasty quarter chicken dinner. The meal consisted of rotisserie chicken, coleslaw, cornbread and your choice of a side dish. I recommend the mashed potatoes as a side. After the meal I felt like I could go for some dessert. The dessert menu didn’t have many choices on it and the sweets they did have were all quite strange. They had towering mud pie, fried cheesecake but no slices of normal cheesecake or cake. I decided to try the fried cheesecake, but regretted my decision upon tasting it. I ended up picking off the entire crunchy exterior and just nibbling on the cheesecake filling, which tasted okay. When it came time to pay for the meal we handed the waitress the gift card we had, which covered more than what we had spent. We figured she would swipe the card then return it to us, since we hadn’t spent the full amount on it. However, when she came back to our table there was no card in her hand. It turned out that she had used the rest of the money on the card towards her tip. I found that rude that she took all the money off the card without even asking. Plus we had already left her a generous tip in cash on the table. So, I guess the lesson is that if you are paying with a gift card and intend to use it again, make sure to specify that you want whatever is left on the card back or they might assume the rest of the money is a bonus tip for them."

January 2009 — "I ordered the Cobb salad. It was a big portion filled with lettuce, mushroom, grated cheese, sliced boiled eggs, green onions, turkey, ham and served with warm cornbread. The atmosphere is a rustic look. Each table has brown paper on top of the tablecloth which is accompanied by an assortment of crayons in a cup. This makes the restaurant a good place to take your kids or children. It will entertain them while your order is being filled (which was actually done in a timely manner). The server prints their name on the paper so you will remember them if you need to call them over for assistance. The washroom has 3 stalls, one of which is a handicapped stall. There are two small sinks with liquid soap dispensers. Paper towels are the choice for drying your hands. This washroom is older to the point of almost needing renovations, but it was clean and worked well. "

"Needs Improvement"

Save Review

August 2007 — "Outback Steakhouse has closed forever at the Crowfoot Crescent Shopping area. Montana's was the next best logical choice to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We put our name down for the short wait list while we tried to adjust to the slight chill in the restaurant. Within the quoted waiting time, we were seated and presented our menus (by the hostess) and our cheerful and friendly server offered us drinks and served them within minutes. We ordered our entrees (I was looking forward to a nice, big, fat juicy rib eyes steak) but I was disappointed by the server's late return and announcement that, "We JUST sold the last rib eye steak a few minutes ago!" When you look forward to a particular dish the whole week, you can imagine how disappointing it is to find out that the LAST one was "JUST" sold a few moments ago. To improve this situation: 1. The kitchen/manager should ALWAYS update the servers on what IS in fact available and how many are left before they JUST happen to run out. 2. Servers should IMMEDIATELY, and I mean as soon as they describe the menu and daily specials (professional servers in New York, Chicago, etc., do this), inform guests in a polite manner, what items are not available. 3. It does not matter to a guest/customer that the last item has JUST been sold. As far as a customer is concerned, if it's on the menu, it should be available and it does not comfort her/him or make them feel any better if the last one was just sold a few minutes ago, a few hours ago or has not been available for a week. Take the item OFF the menu if it's not in the kitchen or if it shouldn't be served at all! In the back of my mind this could've been a shortcoming of the server who JUST forgot that the rib eye ran out during lunch service and made up a silly excuse that it "just" happened to get sold out. I've even seen menus where unavailable items had been covered with stickers to prevent them from being ordered. It took almost 40 minutes (the restaurant had just gotten over the busy dinner rush) to finally get our entrees. My hungry son was less patient and kept asking if we would get a discount for such delayed service. As a server/manager in the food industry, I would normally quote the cooking and waiting time to my guests and make absolutely sure that this would happen and if something prevented this, I would immediately return to my guests and inform them with apologies, and time re-quotes as well as complimentary appetizers or beverages. The food temperature was tepid and my second choice steak was dry, probably from having sat in the window (the counter between the kitchen and the dining area) a few minutes too long. 2 minutes or after the first few bites (which ever comes first) is normally the time period a server gives guests to decide if the food is satisfactory. At this time, the server should "Check back." "How is everything?" is the standard line. We weren't asked about our food. In fact, it would be another 20 minutes before I saw our sever again and she was taking orders for another table. I guess she was doing her side duties when she disappeared. Maybe she took her break. I would normally tell my guests if I was going to absent for a certain period of time and introduce my temporary substitute who would be just as pleased to serve them should they need her/his assistance. Having ordered spicy chicken wings, my son needed water quite often. We were never "watered" or offered drink refills during the meal. I ended up giving my son my water and later on, had to ask the busser (or was he a supervisor?) for more water. Knowing that the service was going bad, I asked for a mud pie dessert AND our check right away. I had a feeling that I still wouldn't get my check until much, much later which is exactly what happened. I should've asked for my check after ordering our entrees. The mud pie was filling and tasty despite the piece of cardboard that I was unfortunate to chew. Having worked in the same industry for so many years and knowing the plight of servers (and their obvious lack of training), I still left the standard gratuity but with a vow to never return and to suggest to my colleagues, friends and relatives NOT to ever dine at Montana's unless they don't mind the inconveniences and shortcomings of the establishment. As we stepped out of the restaurant, it became apparent that the temperature inside was indeed chilly (people who entered the restaurant were rubbing their arms) and it was pleasantly warmer outside. I figured that this may have been another reason why our food was just slightly warm and my steak was dry. Taa-taa Montana!"

"Yikes! Don't Visit the Sunridge Location!"

August 2007 — "I have been to many Montana's restaurants across the country and have been satisfied at times and on other occasions have had the worst dining experience. Today was pretty bad and I think I will go somewhere else from now on. We visited the Sunridge location and sat in the bar area. Our server was attentive, as it was not yet busy, and we ordered right away. Our food came RIGHT away, in about 5 minutes... as great as that is, perhaps they should have spent a little more time on making it just right. We ordered three appetizers... mountain wraps of some kind, individual nachos and the flatbread pizza. While eating the flatbread, my husband found a chicken bone and a strawberry. Two things that should not be found on it. We laughed it off, but told the server so they could tell the kitchen to maybe be more cautious when they're making the food. We were really good about it and ate the entire flatbread. A supervisor came over and remedied the situation and tried to make light of the fact that they had screwed up, and said he'd "play around" with our bill. He also, oddly enough, told us about another table earlier in the day that hated their burger and how he had comped it. I guess having bad food at Montana's is a common occurrence haha. We finished our meal, well as much as we could choke down. The nacho chips without toppings tasted stale and the ones with toppings were so greasy that they fell apart when you picked them up. The mountain things were okay. Even though the food wasn't great, we were still somewhat satisfied with our experience until it took over 20 minutes to get our bill. We almost just got up and left. The waitress wouldn't even come over. When she finally came, she said it took so long because she needed to find the supervisor to give us a discount - which amounted to a whopping $4.99!! Perhaps she should have told us why there was a wait instead of avoiding us for 20 minutes. She was speaking to us rudely and it made us realize we should have probably made a big fuss out of the bones and strawberries, maybe we would have gotten better service or at least they'd give us our bill to get us out of there as quick as possible. I also ALWAYS tip, as I'm in the service industry. We didn't tip a cent. I am pretty sure that I will never visit the Sunridge location of Montana's again, and will probably avoid any Montana's location in the future!! "

"Montana's - one of the worst restaurant in Calgary, Alberta"

July 2007 — "We went to Signal Hill Montana's yesterday, July 14 at around 7:25. When we asked for a table, we were told that they were just cleaning up a table and it will only be for a few minutes. A couple came in after that and then another couple that I think the hostess knows so she gave them the table that is supposed to be ours. Then I stood up and tried to find out why the table was given to another couple instead of to us and the hostess said that they called ahead of time. I did not argue anymore but I did not believe her because on April 07, 2007 we tried to book a table for 10 people and we were told that they are not accepting any reservations... it's first come first serve basis. Anyways, when we got a table we ordered an appetizer and soft drinks which we got and then we waited & wiated & waited for at least 35 minutes for our course meal to come and finally we told the waitress that we will just pay for the appetizer & soft drinks as we could no longer wait as we were very hungry. Not only that, there was a couple that came in while we were having our appetizer and they got their meal before us and they were half way their meal and we were still waiting. The service is extremely poor. So I will never ever go back there and this morning my co-worker told me that in April 2007 they went to Montana's at Crowfoot and they had the same experience. "

July 2007 — "The food taste old and the prices are too high for what you get myself and two others went there for dinner and it cost us 150.00. I could have made myself for a 1/4 of the price. The service was awful and the washrooms where very dirty. "

"Kids liked it, Mom & Dad didn't"

May 2007 — "I visited Montana's Crowfoot location yesterday and wasn't impressed. The service was decent, but the food tasted like it sat way too long before being delivered to our table. On the plus side, this is a great place to take toddlers. Not only can they draw all over the table, the kids' menu is very good. On the bad side, I took my two-year-old to the bathroom only to discover one stall was out of service, and the other was clogged and in desperate need of a clean-up."
