October 2010 — "Khublai is one of the most unique dining experiences I have had in the city. It's hard to find a good restaurant that thinks outside of the box and offers something different. Khublai is basically a do-it-yourself kind of place...very hands on. The atmosphere isn't anything to brag about, and when all is said and done, you are responsible for the outcome of your own meal. Basically, it is a salad bar type setup. You serve yourself and choose the items you want in your stir fry! You put them all together in a stainless steel bowl. They have EVERYTHING. All types of veggies, meats and nuts etc. Chicken, beef, squid, crab, prawns, salmon, pork....everything is raw. Once you have your items in the bowl, there are about 25 different sauces to add to the mix! They also have little signs with recipes for different combinations that they recommend. 3 scoops of this...2 scoops of that...etc. They also have tons of fresh garlic, ginger etc. Once you have everything in your bowl, they weigh it and that's how you are charged. Mine came to nearly $20!!! Pricey! You then take it to the cook, who then tosses it on his huge grill and cooks it up right in front of you! Then he places it all beautifully on a plate and there's your meal! The service was very friendly, and there is definitely a "free" feeling in the air since you are so involved in your own meal. GREAT place! "

"Better than Mongolie Grill!"Jeffrey
September 2009 — "If you're looking for a place similar to Mongolie Grill, then check out Khublai located on 10th Ave SW next to The Whiskey. I went there for lunch one day and it was packed, it must be all the downtown workers going for lunch.
The best thing about Khublai is that you get to create your own meal. They have everything from noodles to seafood to various meats and to top it all off, they have a HUGE selection of sauces for you to choose from. I wanted to get my monies worth, so I loaded up on the meats with lots of beef, beef tenderloin, chicken, and lamb. I drizzled some peanut sauce and was ready to see what the damage was. To my amazement, it only cost me about $9. Not bad when the meal came with won ton soup and rice.
The only complaint I have is that the service seemed very slow. It probably took about 20 minutes or more to get my cooked dish. I survived so I guess the meats didn't go bad in that time luckily. The food was good, but I would recommend coming here when it's not so busy, otherwise you might be waiting awhile for food and service. "

August 2009 — "Khublai is located on 10 Ave SW downtown Calgary. Very convenient location if you work on that end of downtown. This restaurant offers a unique and fun dining experience. You start with either soup or salad. The soups offered are won ton or sweet and sour soup.
On your napkin is a clothes pin with a number on it. You take your clothes pin and proceed to a buffet style table. At the table there are large steel bowls. From there, you go along and fill your bowl with vegetables, meats, and sauces. Each section has a wide variety to choose from. The meat section includes beef, filet mignon, shrimp, squid, chicken and others. There are probably about 30 sauces to choose from.
You then take your bowl and they weigh it. Here is the tricky part. Cost is based on weight, so be very careful when selecting your food. It can end up being expensive if you get carried away! They then cooked our food on a large open grill. The servers brought the food to our tables once they were finished, and finished them with sesame seeds. They also give you white rice. The food was awesome! However, a lot of it depends on you creating your own recipe, although it seems most of the sauces go together fairly well.
The experience is both fun and tasty and I highly recommend trying it out.

June 2009 — "I was always a believer that once you’ve been to one Mongolian grill, you’ve been to them all. Not so! I was so impressed by Khublai’s selection, it was a totally different experience. They have a huge variety of meats and seafood including escargot! The veggie selection is also bigger than most places I’ve been to with asparagus, different types of mushrooms, and some things I couldn’t even identify. The selection was so amazing it was almost torturous, as with most Mongolian grills it is important not to over fill your bowl or you will pay... I always worry at these places that I will mess up with the sauce, but I chose some curry and satay sauce with coconut cream and my dish was delicious. We were also served a salad to start and the dressing was to die for. If you go at lunch it is best to make a reservation as the restaurant fills quicky, but the service is fast and you will easily make it in and back out in an hour. It is hard to compare the price to other Mongolian grills as it all depends on the weight of your food, but I felt that I got more at Khublai for my dollar and I highly recommend you give it a try."

June 2009 — "Its one of those unique dining experiences that offer an escape from the usual sit down restaurants. We entered a restaurant that was simply decorated and clean. Its set up in a way where you go to a buffet style area to choose your raw ingredients, including items such as beef, pork, chicken, shrimp, vegetables, crab, various sauces and much much more. Once you select the combination you want, you bring it to the Chef and he cooks it up and brings it to your table. Be careful though, they do charge by the weight and its very easy to get carried away. It took a me a few trips back here to perfect the amount of food and sauce combination needed to make that perfect lunch. While you are waiting for the food you are served with complimentary soup or salad. My bill usually comes to about 15 dollars and that is a lot to eat. You could probably get away with $10 or less. The servers are usually pretty nice and friendly too, so it’s a great spot for a quick lunch."

July 2007 — "I've dined here several times and have enjoyed the meal and atmospehere every time. I would recommend you visit only when you have time to sit, relax and enjoy your dining companions.
The buffet grill can get pricey, and does take a while to reach your table, but I find it is well worth it. I have yet to order off the menu because the grill is what attracts me to this spot.
Large and small parties are equally welcomed and served. The restaurant itself has an open, welcoming feel to it."

July 2006 — "I recently dined at Khublai for the first time and enjoyed the experience. We opted for a la carte menu items, instead of the buffet-style grill, since my boyfriend is severly allergic to peanuts and shellfish. In fact, we were kind of taking a risk eating at this restaurant, but it was a banquet function, so didn't really have a choice. We were satified with our meal and thought the value for our money was quite good. The stir-fry grill looked quite tasty, but I don't think that the value you get for your money is very good, as some people were having stir-frys that were over $30 (they price it by weight). "
