February 2012 — "I have been the this restaurant several times, and have had excellent food and service at each visit. This time we were there for lunch, and I had the teriyaki beef which also came with rice, veggies, soup or salad, and green tea. My food was so tasty, and I love the dipping sauces that they have! I even bought a bottle to take home! One more great thing about this place is that the lunches are really reasonable - mine cost about 10 bucks and I was stuffed! If you go at lunch, they do cook the food in front of you, but there is no "show" like there is at dinner. I would definitely recommend! "

June 2010 — "I have eaten at Japanese Village over the years, mainly on special occasions. Every time I go I always leave with a full belly and a smile on my face. Going to Japanese Village is all about the experience. The chef cooks the food on a hot iron grill that is surrounded by a table of onlooking patrons. Watching him cook is quite entertaining and the chefs try to crack funny jokes and get the patrons involved. I find the prices at Japanese Village to be very good for the amount of food you receive, the quality, the experience and the atmosphere. You can expect to pay between $20 and $25 dollars for a full meal which includes a soup and salad starter, a shrimp appetizer, the main dish, rice, tea and a dessert. (Patrons pick between several main dishes that are offered. Like shrimp, steak, salmon or chicken. They are prepared Japanese style, like teriyaki chicken for example). The restaurant's atmosphere is calming and elegant. The staff are friendly and prompt with orders. If it is someone in your groups birthday they will do a special Japanese song for you, which includes the birthday person to dress up. (It can be noted that it is quite embarrassing, especially if it is you 17th or 18th birthday). I wouldn't recommend going to Japanese Village on a regular basis but it is a good place to go once or twice a year. "

"Great Food and Atmosphere!"

June 2009 — "I recently went to Japanese Village for lunch with co-workers. Reservations are a must. The lunch menu is simple, and includes beef, chicken, shrimp, salmon, and filet mignon. Prices are extremely reasonable for the location, and the quantity of food. I ordered the filet mignon (with mushrooms for an additional charge), which comes with soup or salad, assorted vegetables, rice and tea. My total bill was just over $15. The food is cooked in front of you. The cooks do not put on the same show during the lunch hour as during the dinner hour. No throwing knives or flaming onions! However, the cooks all seem to be friendly and want to ensure you have a great experience. The food was excellent. The filet was cooked perfectly (they offer you a sample piece to check the doneness). The vegetables are delicious, and the steak sauce that they serve with your steak is to die for. Try it on your rice! The only downside was that the meat was cooked first, and we still had to wait for the vegetables, so was cooled by the time all the food was received. Overall, I highly recommend Japanese Village. The food is fast, tasty, and a great price for downtown Calgary! "

"Entertaining Lunch"

June 2009 — "I visited Japanese Village with a couple of co-workers for lunch. I had never been to a teppanyaki style restaurant before and didn't know what to expect. It was interesting to sit around a hot grill and watch the chef cook your food right in front of you. A starter is included in your meal and I opted for the salad. I'm not sure what kind of dressing they put on it but it was fantastic. The menu offers a variety of meat and meat combinations to choose from. I went with the filet mignon. A little skeptical as to how it would be cooked, I was relieved and impressed when they asked me how I would like my meat cooked. I answered medium rare, and that is exactly how I got it. My filet was tender and juicy, the only criticism I have is that it didn't come with the rest of my meal. The meat was cooked first, and the veggies and sprouts were so slow to follow that by the time I had my complete meal, much of it was already cold. All in all, Japanese Village is an entertaining place for a group lunch, but it isn't the type of place I would make a regular appearance."

"Great Lunch time food and entertainment"

May 2009 — "Hidden behind Gulf Canada Square in the beltline of downtown Calgary is a great little place called Japanese Village. They serve up some tasty and entertaining lunches. A large group of co-workers came here to celebrate an anniversary and were delighted to have chosen this restaurant. You need to come in at a specific time for lunch (reservations definitely recommended) as the Chef’s cooks everyone’s food all at once on a large grill right in front of you. If you get lucky, the Chef will put on a little show twirling knives and food around. It was a very inexpensive lunch; the majority of us spent under 10 dollars and received a LOT of food. The menu is limited during lunch but offers things like Teriyaki Chicken, Teriyaki Beef, Shrimp and salmon. As well, all lunches comes with your choice of Egg Drop Soup, Miso Soup or a refreshing salad. Value like this is hard to find in downtown these days and is quite the experience to see these Chef’s cook right in front of your eyes. The service is excellent and the setting is very nice. Lots of chatter and excitement as everyone is seated around the cooking area. I hear they put on an even better show for Dinner, this is something I will need to come back for."

"Amazing food"

June 2008 — "I went to try the new Japanese village location. The food is, as always, amazing! I had the steak and shrimp - the beef was tender and juicy, and everything was just perfect. The service was quick and friendly as well. Trust me, I am from the United States, where the only Japanese Teppanyaki around is Benihana. Japanese Village is probably a hundred times better!"

December 2007 — "Yet Again I Visited Japanese Village And It Was Wonderful As Always. As For The Other Reviews Ive Read, I Dont Understand How They Feel "Rushed" Everytime Ive Been There Ive Never Felt Rushed. As For The Comment On The Cook Cleaning The Grill Right In Front Of Them, Theyve Always done That Since I First Went To The Old One By Eau Claire Market. (I Believe They Do It Right Away So Its Easier To Clean) The Food Was Once Again Quite Tasty And Filling. Will Surely Revisit."

"Great Steak."

September 2007 — "Japanese village is a great restaurant in Calgary. It's fun to watch the food being prepared (and lets face it, keeps you entertained while you wait for your food, which is a serious bonus). The food is absolutely amazing, especially the steak! It is so tender its unbelievable. They also have Chicken and Shrimp that is equally mouthwatering. Plus if you go for a birthday, tell the waiter and they will bring out Japanese hat/wig thing and robe and take a Polaroid of the birthday person to send home. "

"Rush you in, Rush you out..."

February 2007 — "I went to the new Japanese Village location on 10th ave with some friends to celebrate a new job last night. I was expecting a nice and relaxing evening with a few jokes from our grill cook and pleasant conversation with my guests. The whole night I felt rushed to eat my soup, salad, rice, and even my main course of steak and chicken. The servers kept trying to take away my plates before I was done. They even tried to take away my $6 high balls before they were finished and asked me if I wanted to buy another one. The worst part was when we were trying to enjoy our ice cream dessert. The cook returned and started to CLEAN THE GRILL IN FRONT OF US!! You can imagine the disguising smell of beef, shrimp, and chicken fat turning to a foggy mist as he poured hot water on the grill. It was very hard to enjoy our dessert at that point. I was absolutely disappointed in their rush you in, get as much money as fast as you can, rush you out strategy. I also was hungry again in a couple hours - what a ripe off. Next time, we'll do sushi instead."

"Quite Tasty & Well Priced!"

January 2007 — "I hadn't been to Japanese Village for about 15 years, but since it just relocated two blocks from my office I thought I'd try it out for lunch. A group of us went around 1pm (the restaurant recommended that we make a reservation beforehand). We got to sit around the grill and watch the chef cook our food. I ordered the Steak and Shrimp Stirfry, which comes with green tea and soup or salad. It was $8.95, which is very reasonable. I also ordered a side of mushrooms. Yum! The only downfall is that they serve the rice right away, while you wait and watch the chef prepare your food in stages. So next came the mushrooms, the shrimp, the vegetables, the steak and then the bean sprouts. By the time everything was on the plate, some of the food was getting cold. I watched other people eat each bit of their food when it was delivered, but I prefer to have the full meal on my plate before I eat. The food was also quite salty, they use A LOT of soy sauce and other salty sauces when they cook it. Overall, Japanese Village proved to be a good place to dine for lunch and pretty soon there will be a sushi bar right underneath it! Can't wait!"
