"A bit disappointed "

January 2012 — "I went to Joey's on Macleod Trail as their food and service is usually pretty good. This particular visit wasn't the best in my opinion. I ordered the halibut and prawn spaghettini which was supposed to be tossed in tomato with olive and basil. However, when it arrived, I was really suprised at how small it was and really disappointed with the all over taste of the dish. There was enough spaghetti there to feed a child, and at $16, I expected more. The pasta seemed to be doused in cajun or something and was quite bitter and spicy. It wasn't what I thought it would be at all. My beer was great though. I guess you can't win them all. Our server was really nice and friendly and everything else about the meal was great. The little sliders we had for our appetizer were the best part of the meal! "

"Top Sirloin sucked, sent steak back twice."
Image

Save Review

October 2011 — "It was busy on a Saturday night. We were quoted with a wait time of one hour and twenty minutes! Good thing they messed up and gave us a table after ten minutes of waiting. Our server was very nice to us. I ordered a nine ounce CAB top sirloin and my boyfriend ordered a tenderloin. The top sirloin was too chewy and I could not swallow the steak after one full minute of chewing. We were offered another cut of steak, so I tried a tenderloin. The tenderloin was cooked to medium well instead of what I asked for, medium rare. I sent that back as well. The third piece of steak that I tried was a little too salty, heavily seasoned compared to the first two. I was tired of waiting for a full steak so I accepted this so-so steak and finished the entire piece. This dinner was eventful. The manager came to talk to us and apologized for the delay and kitchen mess up with the steak. We ended up not having to pay for the 9oz top sirloin. I would go back to Joeys (Chinook location) because our server handled our situation very well. He was attentive. "

"Amazing Salads! "

July 2011 — "I have only ever been to the Joey's in Eau Claire, but my boyfriend and I decided to try the one by his place on Macleod Trail. Being that it's summer and everyone likes a cool, trendy place, it was packed. We were seated pretty quickly though, and our server was great! She was really funny, but also really good at what she does. Our meal and drinks were all served quickly and without error. I had a blueberry mojito to drink, which was one of the most delicious things I have ever had! If you like mojito's you MUST try one! For my dinner I had the Beach Salad, which had candied pecans, avocado, grilled chicken breast, strawberries and goat cheese. I was astounded at the size of it for $16. It was the perfect summer meal! I definitely recommend Joey's as a place to take a date, or somewhere to go with friends. The food is great and the service and atmosphere are never disappointing! "

"host service horrible but good food"

June 2011 — "We visited the restaurant during busy dinner time on a long weekend. The volume of customers within the restaurant was super heavy. There were no empty tables in the lounge or dining room. We had waited for at least 20 minutes before there was a spot open for us in the lounge. We were finally seated by ourselves and ordered a few drinks immediately. Our drinks were delivered to us within 2 minutes and we ordered food right away. Our appetizer and meal were delivered within reasonable time considering the amount of customers in the restaurant. We were able to enjoy our food without much delay. Quality of food at JOEY never disappoints. We would love to come back again for another social event or get together. It provides a great atmosphere for everyone."

"Long Wait but Great Food"
Image

Save Review

May 2011 — "The Joey Tomatoes in Crowfoot is always packed on weekends. It’s difficult to find a seat on a Friday or Saturday night and sometimes the wait can be about an hour. I believe that this is because there aren’t that many restaurants in that Crowfoot area. Last week, my friend and I went to Joey’s on a Friday night and waited about 40 minutes to get a seat in the dinning room. We tried to get a seat in the lounge but nothing had opened. The server was attentive and knew quite a lot about the menu. My friend and I shared the Viva salad and we were impressed by the delicious ingredients including croutons, grape tomatoes, chicken, cranberries and avocado. We also had the gyozas and chilli chicken for appetizers which were amazing appetizers. Overall, the food was quite good, service was great and if you don’t mind the long wait on weekends, then it's definately a place to enjoy a meal. "

"Gotta Be a Diva"
Image

April 2011 — "I really should order something else from the menu other than the Diva Chicken Salad or Beef Dip. I thought I might this time, but no...went back to the standard, and didn't regret it. If you haven't tried the Diva Chicken Salad, you must. Guys, you can eat it too, even though it's a salad and has the word "Diva" in it's name! The chicken is NEVER overcooked...always tender and perfect. The cranberries add just enough sweetness to counterbalance the red onion. The dressing is perfect, just enough to add flavor but not make the salad soggy. The feta cheese is the best cheese to top off this salad. Perhaps the best part is the YUMMY, crunchy tortilla shell that the salad is served in, shaped perfectly to hold the salad. If you would like a refreshing alcoholic beverage, you MUST try their Vanilla Mojito. I sincerely have not had a better drink and have tried numerous times to recreate it at home with absolutely no luck. A great place to go, but make sure you get there early as there is always a big line-up."

"One of the best restaurants in Calgary"

April 2011 — "I spent 2 months in Calgary on business and, I have to say that this was one of my absolute favorites. The place was alway busy and sometimes a little on the noisy side, but other than that I always had great service and the food was great. My favorite was by far the "Buttered Chicken". I have been craving it ever since I returned home to the States. The "Blackened Basa" is also highly recommended. Management was always checking on how the meal was. I wish we had one here in the States as close as my hotel was to the one in Calgary. Go have a great meal and Cheers!"

"Busy Lunch, But Good Food"
Image

November 2010 — "Went for lunch at the Joey Tomatoes off of Barlow Trail in the N.E. We got there around 12:45 on a Wednesday. When we arrived, the large parking lot was jammed pack. We were greeted by a hostess who opened the door for us and proceeded to tell us that it would likely be 20 minutes before they could seat us for 3 people. Figuring that all other restaurants would also be busy, we obliged to stay and wait. While waiting, a waitress came along and served some samples of their Goyza to the crowd waiting for a seat. Luckily, she made it to us before the samples were gone. We eventually were called to our table approx. 30 minutes later. A waitress attended to us quickly and took our drink orders. I settled on the lobster ravioli with a cranberry soda to drink. The wait time was decent, with our food arriving within 10 minutes. My meal was quite good and seemed fresh. Although it was around $17, I thought that it filled me up contently. The cranberry soda could have used a little more cranberry juice, but otherwise was fine. The waitress ensured that she came back to check on us and asking us how our meals were. The ambiance was lively and restaurant was clean. I would definitely go there again, but next time, trying to avoid the lunch time rush."

"GREAT food, atmosphere and service"

September 2010 — "We went to Joey Tomatoes in Eau Claire at about 10:30 pm on a Thursday. There were about 15 of us. We were accommodated in the lounge almost immediately, and our server was quick and efficient. The menu is beautiful, with every item seemingly bursting with flavor and gourmet elegance. We ordered a bunch of appetizers for the group to share and all of them were flawless. I had the lobster ravioli as my main, and I would definitely recommend it to seafood/pasta lovers. The sauce was perfect and the portion was just right. The atmosphere of the restaurant is fun and funky and would suite any sort of occasion, whether it be a birthday, a romantic date, or a fun night with a group of friends. Of 15 of us, all drink orders were correct and served in a timely fashion. The service was great and the food, even better. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone for any sort of occasion. It is a bit on the pricey side, but you get what you pay for for sure. "

"Need to Improve Customer Service"
Image

Save Review

August 2010 — "Crowfoot Location - It seemed like a trendy popular restaurant with attractive wait staff in little black dresses. We were out on the patio and it was a well laid out set up. Our waiter didn’t go out of his way but there wasn’t anything to really complain about either. My meal was exceptional and the substitution to have cheese instead of bacon on my sandwich was easily accommodated. The deep fryer broke down and they brought out my food quite late and without the fries. I was told the fries would be brought out very soon but it took over 5 minutes. I found it odd that I was charged for the exchange of bacon to cheese, especially after the fries were served so late. I also would have expected to get the fries for free due to the late arrival but that was definitely not the case. Despite this incident I would go back to this restaurant for its nice environment and good food but I feel their generosity for customer satisfaction is low. "

"More Selection Would Be Nice"

August 2010 — "I dined at the Joey's in Crowfoot and found it to be a cool trendy place for a meal or drinks. The decor and ambiance was great, and the music was pretty good too. Our server was friendly and attentive, and our orders arrived quickly and were quite tasty. The only downside was the menu and prices. There simply wasn't much selection compared to other similar type restaurants. The appetizer section was small and unappealing and the worst part was that many of the appetizers were the same price as some of the entrees. As for the entrees, again there wasn't too much to choose from and the dessert options were dismal. Compared to their competitors they don't offer enough menu options or value for your meal. With such a small menu (which included both the lunch and dinner options) the prices were quite high. I might go again just for drinks but I think there are much better alternatives for dinner."

"Joey's NE - Outstanding Service"

July 2010 — "My boyfriend and I recently visited the Joey Tomato's in NE Calgary. We opted to sit in the lounge area and our server was with us promptly. She introduced herself as Kimmy and asked each of our names and shook our hands. I thought this was a bit different, but definitely welcome. She then took our drink orders and returned with them and took our food order. I was very impressed with Kimmy as she remembered our names and addressed us personally throughout the meal. Such a personal touch is very rare and greatly appreciated. I'm sure we're not the only ones giving Kimmy generous tips! For my meal I ordered the lobster grilled cheese with a side salad. The sandwich was as good as always and when I ran out of cocktail sauce for dipping, Kimmy brought out some more for me. The food met the Joey's standards I'm used to and we were both very impressed with the service. The restaurant itself is decorated very nicely both inside and out, and the location is convenient. I will definitely be back."

"Amazing Service - My Favorite Restaurant in Calgary"
Image

June 2010 — "My boyfriend and I usually stay away from chain restaurants as well, but everytime we visit Joey Tomatoes at Chinook we have an amazing time and enjoy ourselves. There is no shortage of restauarants in Calgary that are great foodwise, but are overpriced and the service is not up to par. At Joeys in Chinook, the minute you walk in you feel like an important customer and are treated the way you should be at any restaurant you are paying to eat at. The waitresses are always polite and attentive and never forget to tell you what is on special or additions and changes they have made to the menu. The food is always delicious. My favorite part about Joeys in Chinook is that you can always expect the same great meal and service you had the last time, where as some restaurants you often have a great meal once and when you decide to come back, you are dissapointed. At Joeys, I can tell that the Management does a great job of overall running the restauarant and of course, the servers seem happy to be at work. A lot of the time, I have the same waitress which also tells me they keep there employees because they are so well managed and most likely treat there staff with respect. I have yet to have a bad experience at Joeys Chinook. My boyfriend and I usually dine there once or twice a month and is always our first choice. While the prices are not dirt cheap, they are no more expensive than a moxies or earls, yet they are overall, better dishes. I have to say, if I ever want to go out for dinner and have a great drink, great meal and great service with an exceptional atmosphere, I choose Joeys above all. I have tried almost everything on the menu and I really like every dish I have tried. I love the lobster ravioli and the lobster grilled cheese. And if you want a burger, the mushroom chedder Hi-Rise burger is phenomonal. Not to mention, they have the BEST bellini's in the city. Hands down. Overall, one of the best restauarants in Calgary. "

October 2009 — "Joey's Eau Claire is one of my favourite places to eat lunch downtown or go for after work drinks. The service is always exceptional, the staff very friendly and accommodating. It is my destination of choice for my birthday gatherings and any other celebratory occasions to meet with friends downtown. My favourite dish is the Lobster Grilled Cheese. It's served with cocktail sauce and it is to die for. I usually get it with the house salad because the sandwich itself is too rich to combine with fries. I have never been disappointed in this dish. I most recently co-hosted a work function there and we ran up a huge bill over the course of about ten hours there. The staff was so brilliant in dealing with such a large group. We ordered a ton of appetizers and I have to say the calamari is really excellent. It definitely stood out for me. The drink selection is also very good. The Supersonic Gin and Tonic is one of my favourites. That little bit of slush they add to it really puts it over the top. I would always recommend Joey's Eau Claire to anyone looking for a casual atmosphere with great food, wonderful staff and outstanding service."

The service was excellent. Our waitress came around several times to check on us as well as have a quick chat about something unrelated to our food or the service. She was great. I chose the chinese lettuce wraps for lunch. Which I must say are my favourite and always a great choice. My friend had the pesto chicken quesadillas, which I had to try and they was really good. Our beverages and food were served very fast and our meals were hot. The waitress also made sure our beverages were always full. Which I really appreciate when eating a meal. The atmosphere was fun and inviting. The lighting was soft and their was light music in the background. They also have tons of tv screens for sporting events. I think this a great place to catch up with a friend or have a few drinks while watching a hockey game."

While we were waiting, we were given wine and appetizers to nibble on. As well, the hostess asked us if we had any drink orders! The hostess then found a seat in the lounge for us as we still had a bit of a wait to get into the restaurant. The food was excellent. We both ordered steaks, and they were flavorful and cooked to order perfectly. We were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the steaks, a I would never have thought to choose Joey Tomatoes for a steak house. I have to say the mash potatoes were amazing! They are served warm in a spring roll wrapper, topped with real bacon bits, sour cream, and cheddar cheese. All in all, a very good first experience at Joey Tomatoes, and it won’t be our last! "

July 2009 — "It happened to be a hot and sunny afternoon when we had lunch on the patio at Joey Tomato's in Eau Claire. They have recently renovated the restaurant and patio and we were lucky enough to snag one of the outdoor couch-like booths on the patio. They are super comfortable with movable umbrellas to keep you in the shade. We ordered cold summery beverages and relaxed over a long meal. We had the crab and artichoke dip to start and it was very good. I love the way they make it with tomato sauce and cream cheese. I ordered the lobster and grilled cheese sandwich with a ceasar salad. The sandwich is served with a cocktail sauce and has whole big chunks of lobster in it. It was so good that I am still thinking about it days later. We had a very pleasant afternoon on the Joey's patio with good service, sunny weather and good food. I would recommend eating at Joey Tomato's in Eau Claire market. "

We were greeted by the hostess who informed us that they were full except for this little table right in the middle of other tables in the restaurant. We didn't really care what the size of our table was as long as we could eat, so sat there. After we gave our drink order, the manager came over and said that he found us a more suitable table in the lounge, which was actually perfect! We could see the game on one of their big TVs and we had much more space. I ordered the burger with fries, while my wife had the beef dip. Both items came with fries and they were sooo tasty. The burger was very good and my wife loved the beef dip as it was served with some horseradish mayo that she thought was very tasty. The service was very good even though the place was packed and we thoroughly enjoyed watching the game while eating our meal."

June 2009 — "After being picked up by my friends, we decided to head here for dinner since we couldn't pick anything else. The menu is pretty typical for all semi-high end restaurants. The wait for a Monday night was approximately 20 minutes which wasn't too bad I suppose. They did offer us complimentary wine while we waited which was a nice touch. I ordered one of the cheaper items, chicken quesedilla and fries for $11.95. It was pretty standard tasting, nothing spectacular but I wasn't that hungry and I think I ordered it more so that I could have something to pick at. The service was good and they quickly brought a new drink for my friend when it was getting low. I liked that I was able to go in jeans and not feel underdressed but there were still people there dressed really nice if you wanted to make it a fancy night out. It was a good place for my friends and I to catch up. A little on the pricier side but a good place for a night out or for a date. "

As a thank you the restaurant gave us some free gyoza that they had been photographing. It was so very delicious. Aside from the free gyoza we had ordered the ginger beef as an appetizer. This is by far the best ginger beef in the entire city hands down. After the appetizer we shared the bacon burger with mushrooms, which was also very good. But still not as good as the ginger beef. March 2009 — "I was driving at midnight last night when we spotted Joey Tomatoes. We decided to check it out since we were both hungry and not sure whether we'd have many choices, given the time. I would have never expected the place to be so busy; we sat in the lounge area. Joey's is a real great spot to eat during the day, I've always found it one of the more classy restaurants in the city; however, this was my first late night Joey's experience!!!! We had a great time! The staff was very friendly and present everytime you needed them to be there. I was very surprised at how late they stayed open, only leaving shortly after 2am. It was a very enjoyable atmosphere in the lounge, they had dance style music playing just loud enough you could carry on a conversation without having trouble, or being distracted by the table next to you. I would recommend this as a excellent place to bring a significant other on a late night or even to conduct business meetings through-out the day. I must also comment that I was pleased with the bill total after passing just over 2 hours in the lounge. They have drink specials, and for overall quality versus dollar its an impressive establishment! "

November 2008 — "One weekend when we just didn't feel like cooking, but only had about an hour before we had to meet friends, we decided to dine at the Joey's located off Barlow Trail. I have always found this location has very good service and food, even when it is completely busy. On this particular occasion we decided to sit in the lounge area and got a nice table in the back corner. I didn't think I was very hungry, but ordered something anyway - the Hirise Bacon Cheddar Burger with fries. Surprisingly, I found this burger so delicious that I cleaned the plate in record time. My wife usually gets one of the Indian-style dishes, but this time chose to leave her comfort zone and get the Miso Ramen Bowl with chicken. I don't think she was disappointed in the least. The service was good and the ambiance was nice, as there was a hockey game on TV and everyone was very casual. We'll definitely be back in the near future."

June 2008 — "We just visited the NE location of Joey's and the experience is exactly what we expected it to be. We have been to this location several times, and usually opt to dine there because we can't decide on anywhere else and it's pretty close to our house. It was quite busy when we were there, especially the lounge, since the playoffs were on. We were seated within five minutes and our server took our drink order promptly. We chose to have a bottle of Reisling, and it was delicious. When I took a look at the menu, I realized that they had changed it in the past few months or so. Everything sounded really yummy, but if you happen to have nut or shellfish allergies, beware. Almost everything has nuts or fish in it, and my husband is very allergic to both. We were going to get an appetizer, but really the only thing that didn't have these two allergens in it were the chicken wings. Instead, we chose two entrees - my husband got the Rotisserie chicken with mashed potatoes and vegetables - which was very tasty - and the portion was huge. I went for the chicken souvlaki wrap with caesar salad. They brought me fries by accident, but quickly remedied the situation and let me keep the stringy fries (which were cold and yucky anyhow!). The salad was great. Our server was fairly attentive and kept updating us on the hockey score, which was nice. She did forget to give us cutlery at first, but I think that is the job of the hostess or busser. Anyhow, everything was what we anticipated. The food was good, the service was pretty good and we left feeling happy - perhaps it was partly due to the wine! "

April 2008 — "Joey's Tomato's has always been a restaurant that I've enjoyed visiting (specifically the crowfoot location). Their food is absolutely delicious, especially their sushi tacos! They have a very nice ambiance in the restaurants. It is a lot quieter than Earl's while still maintaining a nice lively atmosphere. They also have nice patio seating. Service is always good, the servers tend to know alot when you ask them about specific meals (something my dad will do at every restaurant without fail). They also offer you drinks, and free food samples while you wait to be seated which I think is a very nice touch. All in all it offers a very good dining experience)."

"Surprised at the poor service"

Save Review

March 2008 — "We are frequent business visitors to Calgary, and always stay at the Sheraton across the street. We either go to Joey Tomatos or River Cafe every night we're in town. In the past 3 years, we've visited this restaurant at least 50 times, and had consistently good (often exceptional) service. It's not the type of place you'd take a high-profile client, but nice to unwind with colleagues after a long flight or stressful day. That being said, Calgary's labour shortage is really starting to show. I've never had such poor service. EVER. At several points during the meal, we asked eachother if we should just leave. There were 3 waitresses who all thought they were serving us. So between the 3 of them, nothing got done. Ordered drinks 3 times. They came incorrectly. No apology offered. No refills offered until our food came. I expect slower than average service on a Saturday night. Slow kitchens are not the staff's fault. But I expect beverages to continue flowing. No dry glasses allowed. We had an average-sized table, not a group of 8, but the entrees came in 3 rounds, 5 minutes apart. Very uncomfortable, and not good service at all. One meal was prepared incorrectly, with no apology offered. Just another 20 minute wait. She didn't even acknowledge when he thanked her for bringing the corrected entree. Not a single, "How is it?" or "Can I top up your drinks?" or "Would you like to see a dessert menu?". We could have spent a lot more if she had given us the opportunity, but in hindsight I should be thankful - we would have had to tip her more!"

February 2008 — "I love Joey's, and I try to choose something different every time I go. My restaurant location is at Chinook, and I've never been disappointed. The Ahi Tuna Salad is fabulous, one of my favorite meals. And the chocolate molten lava cake is to die for. A definite must! I find it a "little" expensive, but I'd rather go out once every two months here than once a month elsewhere."

We would love to say we are going back again soon, however we live in Australia! Whenever we go to Canada for holidays tho it will be certainly a restaurant we will visit (more than once, no doubt!!). We ate at the Eu Claire (spelling??) site...no complaints here except very busy...a testament to a truly successful place to eat...and who can complain about that?? "Dear Fran, Thank you for taking the time to post your review on the World Web. Feedback from our guests is extremely important to us and I want you to know that we take it very seriously. I was disappointed to hear about your recent visit to Joeys and that we were unable to execute your Ahi Tuna Salad flawlessly. Food quality and consistency is something we also take very seriously and we have many systems in place to ensure that each and every dish is executed perfectly. Further, it sounds as though the service that you received at Joeys was just “okay” and I want you to know that it is our goal to provide our guests with the most caring, engaging and attentive service ensuring our mission to have “every customer leave happy”. We clearly failed to ensure that your visit was the enjoyable one that you came in for and I would like to extend my sincerest apologies. Fran, I would love to know which location you visited in Calgary as I would like to address your valid concerns with the Restaurant Leader and Chef from this particular location. I know that they will want to follow up with their partners to ensure that they are providing our guests with only the highest level of customer service. As well, they will be addressing your valid concerns regarding your Ahi Tuna Salad with their cooks to make certain that we are executing our dishes flawlessly. Although we cannot go back and change what happened we can use your feedback as a valuable training tool to ensure that a similar situation does not happen in the future. It is my sincerest hope that you will contact me personally so that we can discuss your experience in further detail. Again, thank you for taking the time to post this review. There were flies on the patio and while we were eating the flies multiplied. It soon become uncomfortable to enjoy our meal. Flies were in our food and all over me my friend. Me and my friend did not even finish our meals and decided to leave because it was unbearable to be there. We did not complain but it was obvisouse that we were not happy. While we were paying our bill I over heard the waitress tell another coworker that people on the patio are getting mad over the flies and that it is not her problem and what is she suppose to do about it. I will not be going to Joey Tomatos anymore. There are plenty of others places to go that offer similar food but minus the flies. The waitress should of noticed the situation and perhaps not charged us for a meal."

August 2007 — "This past weekend my friends and I were staying in Calgary to attend a conference with three of our children. Just down the street from our hotel was the Joey Tomato's Eau Claire location where we ate two meals. The first night, Friday at approximately 6pm, our group of five was seated almost immediately. I explained to the hostess that our table had a variety of food allergies so she advised we should tell our server immediately, prior to even ordering our beverages. When our waitress promptly arrived I explained our situation. She listened intently and asked for clarification on whom suffered which allergy. My friend is allergic to eggs, fish and nuts; her daughter is allergic to nuts and fish and myself I am allergic to wheat gluten. The waitress was very conscientious and reassured us that every precaution would be taken by the kitchen to ensure no cross-contamination. We were all able to select items from the menu and our food arrived within twenty minutes which gave us time to eat without being rushed to make out 7pm meeting. The service was so impressive that we returned for dinner the following evening. This time our waiter was Scott. Once again I explained our food allergies and he was beyond accomodating. He requested that we remain in our same chairs for the entire meal to ensure the kitchen could track each order to maintain the safety of our food. He then brought out a Gluten-Free Menu designed specifically for my specific type of allergy. There was a variety of appetizers and entrees and I had the Bombay Butter Chicken (which was absolutely fabulous!) It can be very challenging for my friends and I to eat a meal in a restaurant. The fear of cross-contamination prevents us from really enjoying our meals. Joey Tomato's removed that fear and turned our dining experience into something spectacular! Scott's attentiveness and incredible service even garnered a tip from each our our three girls (9, 11 & 13 years old) who pulled money from their own purses to leave for Scott. My friend and I also left generous tips to show appreciation for the exceptional service and dedication to fine food. Thank you for providing the opportunity to dine in excellence!"

"Worst Service and Poor Standard of Food"

July 2007 — "I have been visiting your Joey Tomatoes (Barlow Tr location) with family, friends, and business acquaintances for many years. Never have I had such inept service, and bad quality of food. I had a out-of-country guest whom I had wanted to treat with your fine dining. Here's the scenerio of the evening as it unfolded: - Ordered our dinner at 5:30om. Our meal came at 6:45pm. It took 1hr and 45 mins to be served our dinner. I ordered a salad plus a chicken burger with fries. My friend ordered wings and a salad. Our meals were cold!! Cold fries, dry burger buns; whole meal was cold. While we were waiting, I mentioned to the waitress that the table seated AFTER us, were served BEFORE us. A customer seated behind my friend left because of the poor service. No use re-ordering the meal "hot", as it would probably take another 1 3/4 hr to replacement. - my friend ordered a strawberry daquirie that was served in a tall water glass vs the appropriate daquirie glass for presentation. - after one taste of my salad, I found it to be bitter, so I asked the waitress if I could REPLACE the salad with a caesar salad. She said not a problem. After a while, I received the replacement caesar, but was too full from my chicken burger meal, and asked for the salad to be packaged for me to take home. To my surprise when I received the bill, I was charged for 2 salads. When I inquired, the waitress said that the acting manager insisted that I be charged for two salads because I'd ordered the first one and didn't like it, then to order the second one as a replacement would constitute 2 charges, especially if I'm taking the replacement salad home. I explained I was too full to eat my salad whether it was the first one ordered or the replacement caesar. How dreadfullly petty!!! (I left the restaurant after paying the bill, and left the salad, too). - after the meal, we ordered coffee and the filo apple pie with ice cream and caramel. My friend asked for brown sugar for her coffee. Waitress came out with Splenda instead. Both our coffees were lukewarm instead of hot. The apple pie came out brown, black, and burnt!! Can you imagine being served BURNT apple pie at a restaurant?? It should never of left the kitchen, let alone served to customers!!! My friend and I were disgusted!! In fact, everything that could go wrong, went wrong for this evenings dinner out!! You have lost a loyal customer in myself. I visit your establishment 4-6 times per year since you've opened the Barlow location. I am usually there with anywhere from 2-10 guests at a time with family, friends, business clients, and out-of-town guests. We usually celebrate special occassions at your restaurant. I usually foot the bill, plus add a generous 20% tip. You do the math. I/We DO NOT recommend anyone visit Joey Tomatoes until they've rectified their problems with standard/quality of food served, and attention to service deserved by their customers."

Management Response:
"Hello,

First off, I want to express my sincere thanks for taking the time to write this feedback and for being a loyal guest of Joeys. I want you to know that feedback from our guests is very important to us and we take it very seriously. I am, to say the least, disappointed to hear about your recent experience at our Barlow location and I can completely understand your frustration and dissatisfaction with the described events. We failed on many levels here to ensure that you and your friend’s evening was the enjoyable one that you came in for; from the abnormally long time it took to receive your meals, the lack of quality regarding your dishes, the poor service your received, the lack of presentation regarding your friends daiquiri, being charged for two salads, the burnt dessert that you received to the lack of quality coffee’s. This type of experience is completely unacceptable and could not be further from our mission to have “every customer leave happy”.

I want you to know that I have forwarded your feedback to David Rylee, Assistant Restaurant Leader and Rupert Martin, Chef at our Barlow location. They are currently investigating this situation and they are sitting down with their teams to ensure that they understand our commitment and mission to providing our guests with attentive, engaging service and fresh quality food. Although we cannot go back and change what happened, we can use your letter as a valuable training tool to ensure that this type of situation does not happen in the future.

I understand your hesitation to visit our restaurant again and it is my sincerest hope that you can forgive us for not delivering on your night out and that we have the opportunity to restore your faith in Joeys. If you feel comfortable, please contact me personally so that I can send you a gift card and have you back into our restaurant for the type of experience that you should have received initially. As well, I know that David would really value the opportunity to speak with you personally regarding your candid feedback and investigate these valid concerns further. My direct email address is mconte@joeysrestaurants.com and my personal phone number is 604-937-2307.

Again, thank you for sharing your unfortunate experience with us. Feedback such as yours, while painful to read, does allow us to become stronger and serve all of our guests better.

July 2007 — "My husband, son and I have been at Joey's three times this past 7 days. Our first server was great. The second visit we sat along the cooks. We waited 45 minutes for our meals and watched them up on the counter getting cold. My husband and I ordered a second cocktail and were served the cocktail upon finishing our meals. My starter salad was served after my main course was started. We couldn't get any water refills for the table. The server lost my husbands credit card! Can you beleive this! She lost his credit card! She found it but came back to tell my husband he didn't give her his card...she found it after that! This services was very poor. The restaurant wasn't busy at this time. The third visit this past Sunday, we were seated at the table beside the hostess desk where we had to listen to the staff and their stories while they goofed around. This isn't what we want to listen to during dinner and cocktails. It amazes me how long it takes to get a drink! OR even to get a refill on water! It took 45 minutes again to get our meals and prior to that 10 minutes before the server acknowledged our presence. We were constantly looking back to see where our serve could be. For heaven sake hire reliable servers instead of these young kids who really don't care about "service" We are in Calgary frequently and will not be back to Joey Tomatos"

"Dear Kelly,

Thank you very much for taking the time to post this review. Feedback from our guests is extremely important to us and I want you to know that we take it very seriously. I was extremely disappointed to hear about your recent visits to Joeys. Kelly, I can completely understand your frustration with the described events as customer service and food quality are the most important aspects to a successful dining experience and I am so sorry that these were both not evident during your visit. We failed you and your family on many levels, on more than one occasion; from waiting 45 minutes for your meals, watching your meals sit and become cold, receiving your cocktails far too late, receiving your started salad after your main course, not being able to get any water refills at your table to having the waitress lose your credit card. Furthermore, the service, or lack thereof, that you received on your subsequent visit is completely unacceptable and could not be further from our mission to have “every customer leave happy”

I would really appreciate it if you could e-mail me directly(mconte@joeysrestaurants.com) with the location that you visited. We have four locations in Calgary; Barlow, Crowfoot, Eau Claire and Chinook. I know that the Restaurant Leader and Chef at the location that you visited will want to address these valid concerns immediately with both of their teams. Kelly, I want to thank you for posting this review. I know that we cannot go back and change what happened but we can use your feedback as a valuable training tool in our restaurants to ensure that this type of situation does not occur again in the future.

Kelly, we would hate for this to be your lasting impression of Joeys. We know that we can be so much better and would appreciate the opportunity to prove this to you. Please contact me personally so that we can discuss the possibility of getting you and your family back into Joeys on your next trip to Calgary.

April 2007 — "April 2007 (Month Visited) — "In recent months I have found that Joey's service and food has gone from bad to worse. While the environment is warm and inviting, the experience is anything but that. I used to love Joey's food but now it just sucks. I have done both dine-in and take out and both are terrible. In one recent experience, my boyfriend ordered the newyork steak with mashed potatoes and asparagus, only to get it totally burned and charred. I ordered the fettucine alfredo and that too was very dry and the ends of the noodles were rock hard. When I ordered, the waitress seemed oblivious of the menu and got all flustered when I tried to explain what I wanted. In addition, the management was less than helpful. I work in the customer service industry and I am also management and the way I was treated was a huge insult. I wonder if their management is aware how much business they will lose by not dealing with this. The best that can be said is that their drinks are out of this world but it is not worth the half hour wait of being unacknowledged just to get the wrong drink in the end. That combined with crappy service and rude servers is a deadly mixture. The food is not the greatest anyways; at least not since they got rid of the ginger-sesame salad. Save your money and go somewhere else.""

All I can say is “Wow”. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal, as did my mother. I was especially surprised by how tasty the garlic bread was! Joey’s took the time to ensure every aspect of our meals was done to perfection. The service was also great. Management Response:
"First off, I want to express my sincere apologies for your experience at Joeys as it couldn't be further from the type of flawless experience that we want to provide our guests with. It is unacceptable that our hostess forgot about you and seated other parties ahead of you. Furthermore, to hear that your food was served with nuts after you warned your server of an allergy is extremely concerning. We would expect all of our partners to handle a situation like this with the utmost professionalism and rigorousness and I apologize that this was not evident with your party. I want you to know that I will be forwarding your email to Cory Gaudette, Assistant Restaurant Leader so that he can address these valid concerns immediately. I know that Cory will want to personally follow-up with the individual who served you and in order for him to do so I was hoping you could email me your server’s name (it should be on the bottom of your bill). As well, can you email me the date and time of your visit so that Cory can also speak with the hostess team that was on shift during your visit. Although, we can not go back and change what has occurred we can use this email as a valuable training tool to ensure that a situation like this does not occur again in the future. We would really hate for this to be yours and your groups lasting impression of Joeys and we would really like the opportunity to have you back into the restaurant for a much better experience. I would very much like to send you a gift card to return to the restaurant as our guests. If you would like to email (binnes@joeysrestaurants.com) me your mailing address I will send you a gift card out immediately. I know that Cory will also be wanting to contact you to personally invite you back into his restaurant. Again, I am sorry that we did not deliver on your night out. Your feedback is extremely important to us, and although painful to read, it will allow us to become stronger and serve our guests even better. I look forward to hearing from you soon! Sincerely, Britt Innes Phone 604-937-2302 binnes@joeysrestaurants.com "

July 2006 — "I was extremely surprised at the excellent quality, choice, and flavour of the food at Joey Tomatoes. I had the calamari as an appy, and I will say it was the best calamari I have ever had. I chose the Ahi Tuna sandwich for the entree and, wow, it was so flavourful and moist! I can't remember what my friends had, but they were also impressed. The service was very good, and the drinks nice and strong ;) The only thing lacking was the fact that they didn't have any cream for our coffee..."is milk ok?" No, of course not, lol! Great overall experience though. Bye bye Earls, hello Joeys! "

"Pleasantly Surprised!"

July 2006 — "While I tend to support independently-owned eateries, I sometimes end up at chain restaurants like Joey Tomato’s. In fact, this just happened to me when my wife and I were in Crowfoot Village a couple of weeks ago and needed a place to eat. We couldn't find any smaller restaurants in the area, so we picked Joeys just by chance. I gotta tell ya, our meals were terrific. I was pleasantly surprised by the tenderness and flavour of the baby back ribs, and my wife was equally pleased with the Thai noodle salad. Also, our dessert (a combination of warm chocolate cake, ice cream and raspberry sauce) was the perfect way to top off an already-satisfying the meal."

"Pretty darn tasty"

November 2005 — "Like the last reviewer, I tend to stay away from chain restaurants but Joey's is one of my indulgences. I have tried many, many items on the menu and have never been disapointed. My favourites include Crab and Artichoke dip, the pizzas, the panang curry and the apple pie with maple ice cream. I usually go to the Calgary Eau Claire location, but I have also been to all of the other Calgary locations, as well as the one in Burnaby, and the service has always been efficient and friendly. It's a but more expensive than a few other similar chain restaurants, but for consistent service and taste, I think it's worth it. It's usually always busy and they don't take reservations so be prepared for a bit of a wait at peak times. It's also very noisy, which doesn't bother me but always kept my dad from agreeing to go there with me. "
