April 2012 — "We visited Fuji Yama 1st street and 5ave location near Chinatown. It was the slowest dinner service I have ever experienced.
We ordered a platter of salmon sashimi (7 pieces or so), tempura udon, beef udon, scallop sashimi and a tokio special handroll. The plate of sashimi was prepared by the kitchen quite fast but it was not delivered to our table until 30 minutes after it was already prepared. I could see with my own eyes that the chef had already prepared it and ready for delivery at the counter. The two servers were just too busy doing who-knows-what and didn't get around to it until later. The sashimi pieces were not great. I did not enjoy them as I would at other restaurants.
The beef udon was way too salty and the soup was too greasy. They were generous with the amount of beed though. I did not like the broth at all. I finished the noodles and some beef but did not have any taste of the soup.
The handroll was acceptable. That was probably the best part of the meal. It came with a raw quail egg which had been carved open at the top of the egg shell. I did not want to eat raw quail egg so I dumped that into my beef udon.
Our green tea was not refilled at all this evening. I was thirsty. We waited for our servers to come by and clean our tables but they never came. We were tired of waiting and we observed that several tables had gone up to the front desk and paid directly there. So we did the same thing, went up to the front desk and paid there.
They could use more servers. I only saw 2 on duty. Our table was stinky, it stunk heavily of urine. "

January 2012 — "This sushi restaurant is located close to my office so I often visit with co-workers tp take advantage of their lunch special. For $11, you get soup, salad and your choice of 2 items on the menu (or 3, but it's more expensive.)
I always order the sashimi, which is fresh and delicious -- I just wish they gave us more than four pieces (two salmon, two tuna.) The sushi consists of two large roles and about four nigiri (fish on rice.) It's also good but again, not enough. My other frequent choices are Tempura, which is good and filling, and the tempura chicken (I think it's called kushiage?), which is delicious. They also have teriyaki chicken/beef, dumplings etc. to choose from.
The service is usually good, but on a couple of occasions, I've found myself waiting for ages to get my food. The sushi typically comes out quicker than hot meals. "

July 2011 — "Fuji Yama Japanese Restaurant is a cozy sushi restaurant tucked away in a discrete 2 story building in the heart of Calgary's downtown right across from the Bow building on Centre Street and 5th Avenue SW. It offers a dimly lit dining area with plenty of choices for seating large groups or smaller tables as well. There are traditional Japanese booths in which people sit on top of wooden benches in a small dining room area, open areas with a large projector TV to catch the game while enjoying your meal, and booths near the back for a more casual dining experience. The quality of the food is pretty good too and offers up all the traditional Japanese cuisine and drinks you'd expect. My recommendation is the dragon roll which is one of the most flavourful rolls of sushi I have encountered dining in Calgary. My only complaint is sometimes it can be tough waving down service during the busy lunch and dinner hours."

July 2011 — "Fuji Yama is located in Chinatown. It has a good selection of rice dishes, sushi, sashimi and noodles. I went on a Tuesday and enjoyed a few different rolls along with a beef curry dish and a teriyaki beef appetizer. My friend and I both ordered a miso soup which ended up being too salty. The dragon sushi roll was the tastiest out of all the things we ordered. It had avocado rolled on the outside. The food is quite tasty and the portions are a decent size. The only problem is service is slow there. Even with three tables and two servers, it took awhile for our drinks, food and bill to come. There also only seemed to be one cook in the back to make all the food for a Tuesday night. The restaurant looked clean and the prices were reasonable. I would give the food a good rating but the service is a little slow and they don't seem like they have a reason why it should be. "
