January 2011 — "When I was still in university, going to the “Grad Lounge” (as it was known at the time) for lunch was never an option. Well with my undergrad label, now replaced with alumni, I recently took the opportunity to dine at this University of Calgary establishment. Unlike the Den/Black Lounge, the Last Defence is decidedly more restaurant than lounge, with a menu that ranges from burgers and pizza to penne and grilled scallops. At the advice of a friend of mine, I ordered the Philly cheesesteak. For the price, it was an acceptable facsimile for the real thing (why restaurants still refuse to use Cheeze Whiz in its preparation, I’ll never understand), and definitely left me more than content. The service here is very good. Our server made sure to point out the food and drink specials of the day, and was prompt in delivering or order. Even after dining here I’m somewhat unsure if there is in fact some-type of exclusivity at the Last Defence, irregardless, if you’re on the U of C campus and want something more than fast food, give it a shot. "
