December 2010 — "If you’re looking to stop along Calgary Trail for something to eat, you can be reasonably confident at Calgary Trail Noodle House. It specializes in Vietnamese dishes, but offers some of the standard Canadian Chinese mainstays.
The interior is spacious and clean. One enters past a large aquarium into a room full of plastic-topped tables, backed by a bar. When we were there on a Saturday afternoon, there were a few other tables occupied, and the service was very friendly and reasonably fast.
The menu was not particularly prepossessing, with the stock pictures of smiling cow heads and naked whole chickens apparently made of yellow silly putty adorning a rather pedestrian list of dishes, with little that would seem to be of interest to those even a little adventurous. But we persevered, and were nicely rewarded.
We started with spring rolls and green onion cakes for appetizers. The spring rolls were standard fare, done up nicely. The green onion cakes were delightful, crispy and flaky on the outside, warm and chewy inside, with just a nice hint of onioniness, rather than the strong onion flavour that sometimes overwhelms the dough.
For dinner, we decided on two plates to be shared. First, the beef with vegetables was just about perfectly cooked. The veggies were done, but not overdone, so they were cooked for us, rather than scooped out of a pot where they had simmered since 10 that morning. The beef was tender, a bit oversteamed, I would think, but tasty enough.
Second, the Shanghai noodles was also excellent. Including shrimp, flank steak in thin slices, and mushrooms and vegetables, the noodles themselves were tasty, just nicely done. The shrimp were good, but the steak slices were exquisitely done. The dish was very nicely balanced and complemented the beef and veggies nicely.
Tea and ice water throughout the meal were brought by without fuss, but we never waited.
There was a limited selection of drinks, including beers and (if one is particularly adventurous) wine. We didn’t avail ourselves this visit. But we might next time, and there will be a next time.
The Calgary Trail Noodle House is worth looking for if you’re in the area.
