November 2010 — "This new Vietnamese restaurant is in the Old Charlie Chan's spot in Kensington - the seating is now a combination of granite top tables, and cozy booths that hold 2 or 4 people. I like the new décor; a combination of creams and browns and good lighting. I appreciate that the restaurant is less like a cafeteria and has a more private feeling. I had a special off of the lunch menu, a suggestion made by the owner, even though it was evening. I ordered spicy beef soup and fresh prawn salad rolls for $10.25. The salad rolls were stuffed with noodles, prawns, lettuce and came with a dipping sauce that was quite tangy and spicy. The rolls were pretty basic - there wasn't much shrimp but they were like a bonus for the price. The spicy beef soup (#29) was very good - lots of vegetables and hearty with big chunks of beef and tons of noodles! I think this is the heartiest Vietnamese soup I've ever had! It was healthy and just what the doctor ordered. The service was very friendly and I appreciated that the owner/server suggested I order from the lunch menu although he didn't come back to check on us at all - he certainly wasn't rushing us out. This place is worth checking out if you are looking for an inexpensive and hearty soup. There are more expensive items on the menu with many traditional items - I'll be going back!"

November 2010 — "Song Han is the new Asian fare in Kensington, located in the old Charlie Chan restaurant. Completely refurbished, the decor is tasteful and open but with partitions so that it doesn't feel like a cafeteria. A beautiful, clean fish tank sits in the corner (although the fish look too big for the tank) and the music is reminiscent of more traditional Vietnamese. Everything looks nice and clean and new, and the owner seemed pleased with the fairly busy restaurant. He explained that they have been open for about 3 months and they are receiving good reviews. He suggested we order off of the lunch menu (even though it was evening) because we were interested interested in pho - the soup. That way, we were able to get a choice of either fried spring rolls or fresh salad rolls along with a huge bowl of soup for $10.25. Nice! I chose the prawn salad rolls to go with my spicy chicken satay soup and received 2 huge rolls with spicy peanut sauce. The rolls were good, although I was a little surprised that there wasn't cilantro or basil in the rolls so they were a tiny bit bland. The soup was delicious, accompanied by the obligatory bean sprouts and fresh basil. I was very pleased with the food and the ambiance; the service was a bit slow but I realize the owner was the only server so he was hopping. I recommend this restaurant if you'd like good Vietnamese soup - I can't wait for summer to sit out on the patio!
