July 2011 — "We decided to eat at Grand Pearl restaurant with the family. This place use to be old Pizza Hut and the exterior with the triangular roof shows that. All the edges of the restaurant have windows lining them. This restaurant had a fairly diverse crowd and was your typical Chinese restaurant. It appeared to be family run and the owners/managers would pop in and out and chat with the customers. The food was pretty good. Our first dish was Peking duck which was okay; the dough of the wrap was decent but could be thinner. The fish in soya sauce was very smooth and I thoroughly enjoyed that dish. The fried chicken was okay but tasted too much of ketchup. The gai lan was a bit bland and needed more garlic. Overall, it was pretty good but I would not get a set menu but rather pick a variety of dishes from the menu. "

"Fantastic dim sum"

January 2010 — "Full disclosure: I live really close to this place. Any restaurant I can walk to will get bonus points from me. And when that restaurant serves delicious food, then I am extremely happy! Recently went here for dim-sum and was highly impressed. I've tried several places in Chinatown with and without carts, but I prefer the quality and freshness of Grand Pearl. The menu isn't as extensive, but what they have is done really well. The shrimp & snow-pea leaf dumplings were exceptional. Usually, these come filled with some sort of ground up shrimp bits. At Grand Pearl, they use giant pieces of prawn. The dumplings weren't greasy at all and didn't taste loaded down with salt and msg either. All of our dishes were hot, fresh and brought our promptly. Baked BBQ pork buns, fish cakes, green onion pancakes, salt & pepper squid tentacles... all great! Service was great too. The restaurant was nearly full and our server still took the time to point out the daily specials (4 prawn dumplings for $1.50!), answer our questions, bring extra sauces, etc. I'm definitely headed back!"
