January 2010 — "Sukiyaki House, a new sushi place in the downtown core is going to revolutionize sushi as you know it. A friend and I went for lunch and I still can’t get over how good it was. The restaurant is very modern, with your typical Asian theme. It is big enough to accommodate a fairly large crowd and we didn’t need a reservation. I have to warn you, it is quite expensive, but if you are a sushi lover it is a worth while treat. We had some tempura shrimp and dynamite rolls which were great as they are at most restaurants, but Sukiyaki House also has a wide range of rolls I have never seen before. We had the spicy salmon rolls which are made with a crunchy mixture on the inside and salon with a mayo type dressing around the out side. Yum. And the mango roll, made with Mango, avocado, cream cheese and smoked eel. I was a little weary when this dish arrived but truly, this roll was a party in my mouth! Amazing! The flavors surprisingly all go so well together. If you are a sushi lover you need to try Sukiyaki House, you will never look at sushi the same again.

December 2009 — "it was a cold blustery day when we visited the new location of this restaurant located on 9th Avenue and 2nd Street S.W. just west of the Calgary Tower and the Palliser Hotel. The décor is quite lovely and very open. There were only 2 other tables occupied which I hope was only due to the cold weather. It is a Japanese sushi restaurant, but they do have other options on the menu for someone like me who is not a sushi fan. The other four people at my table however love sushi and ordered 6 different types of sushi, each beautifully presented and were almost works of art. We shared appetizers of Spicy Tempura Shrimp, Gyozas, and Chicken Skewers – again all were beautifully presented and tasted wonderful. As I was not participating in the sushi, I chose Tempura Shrimp as my main meal, there were 4 large prawns beautifully golden brown and crispy served with a sauce that you dip into and then dip into green-tea salt blend. It was excellent and I really enjoyed the green-tea salt blend. For dessert we shared a Chocolate Brownie dessert that came served with banana ice cream and was topped with spun sugar and a Sake Crème Brulee. Each dish was presented beautifully and had a star fruit as well as some berries as a garnish. The Crème Brulee was delicious, but would have been even better had it been served warm. Would not hesitate to go back and would recommend it to friends.

In operation since 1976, Sukiyaki is in a new location as of 2010 by the Calgary Tower. They feature a contemporary and upscale decor. Eat at the sushi bar or dining room and enjoy beef hot pot (with one day advance notice), sushi and teriyaki dinners. They are open for lunch Monday to Friday and for Dinner Monday to Sunday.
