September 2011 — "The Szechuan restaurant is a little hole in the wall place on 16th Ave and 4th Street NW that is very easy to miss and pretty nondescript. However, they serve up some pretty mean Chinese food! I don't think the place is all that clean and if you are squeamish, it might not be the place for you. There are kidneys, beef bones in blood and other uncommon items on the menu available to try. The food is really good though and of course you can stay on the safer side of things. We had fried rice, a chicken dish, and beef with vegetables. All of our food was really good. The service was good although our server struggled a bit with communicating in English. Our food came fast and everything was fresh and tasty. The menu is huge with tons to choose from. I definitely recommend trying this place out if you are looking for the real deal as far as Chinese food goes. "

"Super Authentic!"

September 2011 — "I have driven by the Szechuan Restaurant a thousand times over the years but have never gone in. I always figure that if a restaurant in Calgary is still open years and years later, it must be good. We walked in and immediately knew we weren't in a Western Chinese food kind of place. We were the only white people, which is usually a good sign! We were seated right away in the busy restaurant and the servers were very friendly. The menu is a bit scary and some of the stuff sounds pretty gross so we played it safe and ordered chicken fried rice and kung pao chicken. They serve green tea with your meal and everything is pretty fairly priced. I will mention that we had to choose the spicyness of our chicken and we went with medium. It was pretty spicy! Everything was really good though. If you are looking for authentic Chinese food, this is the place to go! "

"Spicy Delicacies"

December 2010 — "My family and I have been getting pretty bored eating at the same Cantonese restaurants for the longest time, so on Christmas Eve we decided to try Szechuan Restaurant. Inside it's ridiculously quaint exterior is a lovely old-school Chinese restaurant with some of the best wait-staff and distinctive dishes in the city. We ordered a wide range of dishes including, the spicy boiled beef in hot soup, the jelly fish, sweet and sour pork ribs, prawns with snow peas and the chicken dry-pot. When ordering the dishes we were given a choice of how spicy we wanted them. The spicy boiled beef was interesting to say the least. Honestly, it's hard to describe the flavours and aromas that envelop the dish. It must be tried to be understood. The jelly fish was outstanding, as the sesame oil sauce it was tossed in was a perfect combination of salty and spicy. The only disappointment was the chicken dry-pot, which at 20 dollars, was incredibly boring and not at all worth it. If you're looking for something beyond the standard Chinese restaurant give Szechuan Restaurant a go."

"Great food all around"

March 2010 — "This little restaurant has outstanding Szechuan food. I don’t know if you can find something better elsewhere. They do offer some items that you will find in other Chinese restaurants, but the best food of course is the unique Szechuan items. They have great fish dishes, drop dead good eggplant dishes (I have no idea how they make it so good but you should try it), and all around excellent meat dishes as well. I think most people new to Szechuan food try to be safe and order something that they’ve had at other Chinese (mainly Cantonese) restaurants, but that will take away from your experience of trying something new. Just order something that you think sounds good and haven’t tried before, it’s really hard to go wrong at this little Szechuan restaurant. I have yet to find a dish that I don’t like. The ones that are so-so are usually the regular Chinese dishes you shouldn’t be getting here anyway, like beef stew, which is a popular Cantonese dish."

December 2009 — "My friends and I came to this place for some dinner one night. Its located on 16th AVE across from Rose dale Dry Cleaners, Since it was our first time here, we all decided to picked one dish each to share. This place is a restaurant that specializes in Szechuan food which I’m not sure what that means, but it was very spicy. There was a meat dish that just caused burning in my tongue and honestly, really killed my taste buds. It was a very strange sensation. The other dishes are hard to remember after this because again, my tongue was not working properly anymore. They were pretty standard Asian dishes though that aren’t that memorable. The service was good and it was fairly decent pricing at about $12-15 per dish. I think with the convenience, and the interesting new tastes, we will be back to try the other dishes. "

"A great Szechuan experience!"

December 2009 — "I haven't had too much Szechuan dishes in the past and my experience with past restaurants have been very mediocre as well. However, this little Szechuan restaurant is absolutely fabulous! The service is very decent and fast. When we came in, we were immediately seated. The restaurant had quite a few tables filled for a week day evening. We ordered a couple of spicy dishes just to tie down the szechuan experience, as well as some seafood and veggie dishes to even out the spice. If you are new to this and not sure what to order, you can ask the server for some suggestions. They are quite friendly and will recommend some of the most popular Szechuan dishes. The spicy foods were extremely spicy but good. All the dishes were outstanding. They were hot, fresh and tasty. I highly recommend this restaurant if you want to try some good Szechuan food. "

"Great Spicy Foods!"

December 2009 — "I see this restaurant often as I drive by on 16th Ave N and 4th Street NW. The exterior is very unassuming with just a simple sign that indicates its name. The interior is much of the same. It’s a fairly small establishment with not much in the line of décor and has maybe 10 tables. We ordered several dishes including including sweet and sour pork, spicy beef and the beef brisket. The food arrived pretty fast and was hot off the stove. As you would expect from a Szechuan restaurant, the food is very spicy. They do give you an option of choosing the level of spicyness. All the meats were nice, soft and fresh tasting. We went with medium and it was still pretty hot, but we prefer it that way anyhow. Very good food, decent service and good prices. (About $10-$14 per dish) I’ll definitely come again."
