March 2012 — "The Den has been a fixture on the U of C scene for decades, but it's only in the past decade that it's been a viable choice for grabbing a bite to eat -- previously, it was strictly a drinking joint.
I haven't been there in ages but I recently decided to re-live my student years by having a meal and a jug of beer here before a concert at Mac Hall. I wasn't disappointed -- the den offers really good food at student-friendly prices. The menu is even better than I remember -- there are lots of really tasty-sounding things like unique burgers, wraps and meal salad. My friends and I ended up ordering Pizza to share, which was awesome -- incredibly cheesy and delicious.
The one thing I think the Den can improve on is service. The waitresses are both slow and surly -- I understand it must be frustrating working in a student bar where tips aren't the best, but like most establishments in the city, the waitresses need a reminder that they chose to work in the customer service industry.

November 2011 — "The Den/Black Lounge has been a great choice for a spot to eat on the U of Calgary campus for the last 40 years. Hidden away at one end of Mac Hall, the restaurant has plenty of seating and spots tucked away in corners where the music is not too loud to talk. There are booths and tables which are comfortable, and the decor is pleasant with dimmed lighting. Our server was wonderful and efficient, and the food was great. Their menu is standard pub fare with some slightly healthier choices, including a good selection of salads (1/2 orders are available for many of the salads). Generally the pricing is between $4.50 (bowl of soup) to $14.00, with choices of entrees (burgers, sandwiches), salads and lots of appetizers, and desserts. I chose the Sante Fe Salad which was loaded with a spicy mayonnaise, black beans and corn, tomatoes, cheese and tortilla chips on a bed of spring lettuce. It was SPICY and good, with plenty of food for a lunch. My partner had the carrot/ginger soup with garlic toast which she said was delicious. Every day the Den has deals which are quite affordable for students (and the rest of us who work there!). It is often not terribly busy, especially now with the food court as the other option. A great choice if you are on campus."

September 2011 — "The Den and Black Lounge is the name of the on campus pub and restaurant at the University of Calgary. It is a place were students can enjoy a cold pint and fill up on pub style food with friends after a long sessiono of studying. Being a campus pub catering to mostly students the prices for both drinks and food is very reasonable. The reason for the separate names is the Den portion is located downstairs on the basement level of Macewan Hall and holds parties on Thursday nights when the line up can go as far as the eye can see. The Black Lounge is the upper level of Mac Hall and holds the dining portion of the restaurant. The Black Lounge gets its name from the days of when smoking was allowed inside bars and restaurants and the restaurant was constantly clouded in a haze of smoke. Both place are free of smoke today."

December 2009 — "We went to The Den at U of C on a Friday night. I had the buffalo wrap with sweet potato fries which came with a sweet sauce and my companion had the steak sandwich with Cajun fries. The food tasted good. Every night, the Den/Black Lounge has a promotion for students. The service was good. The place was busy. This is a good place for students as the atmosphere is good and they have some good deals on food and drinks.
The washrooms were clean. The staff was friendly. The food was good.
