March 2011 — "The restaurant is located in the Howard Johnson near Elk Lake on the highway into Victoria. It is the only hotel in the area and the restaurant is divided into a family restaurant and a sports bar with several TVs. It is not a big place but it sure is popular. We went on a weekday evening and the place was pretty full. We did get a table in the bar. It was pretty crowded with not much room between tables but the bartender was good with the service and we didn't wait long for either a drink or our order. I ordered a Lakes burger with half and half fries and salad and my friend had a burger with peppercorn sauce. My burger was awesome. Lots of flavour with a homemade beef patty. My friend enjoyed his burger as well. The sauce was a little messy so he ended up using his fork to eat it. I heard that they have a great Sunday brunch menu. The price was very reasonable and I would definitely recommend this place to anyone. "

May 2010 — "After a wonderful long walk around Elk Lake, it was time for a good lunch. We had both been to The Lakes previously, for dinner, but never trying them for lunch. The Lakes is beside the Howard Johnson Hotel near the Pat Bay highway. Easy to get to, with plenty of parking. The restaurant boasts a popular bar area connected to the main restaurant. Nicely decorated with tables, and booths around the window areas. This is a popular eating establishment; we had to wait, but only for a few minutes. We noticed two specials proudly displayed as you walked into the foyer of the restaurant. Once seated we perused the extensive menu, which included an oriental flare. After much deliberation, I chose the steak souvlaki wrap with salad, my friend, the triple clubhouse sandwich made with fresh roasted turkey on multi-grain with french fries. Our server was very accommodating and had a quick wit and great sense of humor. Our food arrived very quickly even though the restaurant was extremely busy. My wrap was excellent, filled with tender pieces of sirloin, lots of feta cheese, red onions, tomatoes and cucumbers. The accompanying salad was very fresh salad greens with curled carrots and a wonderful blue cheese dressing. My friends sandwich was too much too finish. She raved about its flavour, large amounts of bacon and turkey. The french fries accompanying her lunch were dredged in seasoning salt, a very nice touch. Our bill was $21.00. Overall our lunch was well received, very enjoyable and we can't wait to go back and try a few other interesting menu items."

"Fabulous Salad"

April 2010 — "Went for lunch at The Howard Johnson restaurant in Royal Oak very close to the Common Wealth Pool. We were quite hungry after walking around elk lake this particular Sunday. We arrived at 1 pm and the restuarant was quite busy with lots of people having brunch. The eggs Benedict looked fabulous. I wanted something not to heavy. I was having a hard time deciding between the spinach salad and the chicken wonton salad. So I asked the waitress and she recommended the chicken one. So I choose the grilled chicken wonton salad at price of $9. It came with a soy ginger dressing. The salad was topped with slices of grilled chicken breast along with grated beets and diced tortilla chips on a bed of mixed greens. There were about 6 little wonton pouches filled with chicken & spices. It was a grand portion and beautifully presented. It was absolutely delicious. It was so good I went back the next day and had it again. We sat on the bar side the next day but the menus are the same. The waitresses both days were very pleasant, and the service was prompt. Definately would go back. "
