January 2011 — "Highwood Dinning Room is located in the heart of SAIT campus. The restaurant provides a live classroom environment for culinary students to practice and gain experience. Every fall and winter semester, the dinning room is open for reservation for those who are looking for something different and are supporters of a live classroom experience for the students.
For their dinner menu, the price is currently $44 for a 5 course meal selection. Everyday, along with their set menus, they also have specials for the day. Having been here a few times this year, the quality of food is not bad at all considering these are students. I quite enjoy the creativity and presentation of each selection. Great care is taken to provide a delicate unique dish. For their Fall 2010 menu, I enjoyed their well flavoured Thai Inspired Papaya Salad With Coconut Shrimp as an appetizer. Another favourite was their Caesar salad which was very refreshing with light dressing and freshly made croutons. For main course, I had the Grilled Medallion of Beef. This was an “Alberta Raised Beef with Wild Mushrooms Ragout, Merlot Reduction and Truffle Herb Butter”. Very delicious! Last but not least, dessert! You can not go wrong here! The presentation of the dessert, whether it be crème brule to mousse to cheesecake was decorated nicely which made it almost too pretty to eat!
Overall, the quality of the food isn’t bad for its price but expect the dishes to be small like in the fancy restaurants. The only thing I caution about coming here is the awkward service you may experience. But remember, these are students that are most likely serving for the first time and are extremely nervous. Also, be prepared to wait awhile for the food to arrive. They do, however, have freshly baked bread to keep your hunger down as you wait!

October 2009 — "This is the culinary institute in Calgary and I swear, one of my favorite places to go. Not only are you getting good food, but at a very decent price. Highwood may not be a fancy upscale, but it never fails to surprise me and I really enjoy trying their food. This is where it began, I mean me and food. Maybe it is the learning environment here, but it always seems to teach me something. I had the crab cakes which area always one of my favorite appetizers, followed by the green pea and garlic veloute. I don't really know what veloute is, but it was definitely really good. My friend ordered the roasted chicken and barley broth, which she boasted about, but we were rather confused by the difference in proportion. Hers in a little bowl and mine in a big dish. There was some good time in between waiting for the next course to be served, but as the main course was set in front of us, I thought the wait was not too bad. The waiter seemed a bit flustered and unsure of himself, but give bare with him, it is the beginning of the semester and he is still learning. The duck was different, and I really enjoyed it. My friend seemed to have taking a liking to their special, a pork dish. Lastly, we had dessert. A perfect ending to a great meal. "

The Highwood Restaurant operates under SAIT's (Southern Alberta Institute of Technology) culinary program and serves world class cuisine. A fine dining experience, the seasonal, set menu features items such as escargot and mushroom stew, roasted root vegetable salad, and grilled beef striploin medallion. Thursday features a very popular lunch buffet at 11am. Reservations are highly recommended.
