May 2012 — "Just off Centre Street is a quaint sushi restaurant called Maruju Sushi. A collegue and I decided to give it a shot as we were within walking distance to the restaurant. When we arrived, we were warmly greeted and asked where we preferred to sit. Similar to other sushi places, it was clean, and had an area at the bar to sit if you wanted to watch the sushi chef in action. For us, we decided to sit at a regular table. Our drink orders were taken promptly and the server recommended appropriate portions for both of us. We each ordered a Sushi/Shashimi lunch special and some sides to share. The sushi was excellent! Very fresh, good portions of actual sushi (sometimes there is too much rice and little meat) and excellent overall. It reminded me of sushi that I typically experience in Vancouver. This is definitely a place worth checking out if you want high quality, good service and a decent price."

January 2011 — "A simple small sushi restaurant perfect for a quick rendezvous! I have always enjoyed coming here due to the friendly staff and fresh sushi. Over the years, the menu has expanded from your typical Japanese dishes and sushi to new creative rolls and appetizers. One of their specials I enjoyed was the hurricane roll which consist of mixtures of salmon and crabmeat (I believe) and avocado. Although the ingredients are basic, it is how they make this roll and the sauce used that makes this so delicious. This involves rolling the avocado in seaweed and frying it with a light batter topped with flavoured raw fish and crabmeat. Next on the list was their baked oyster! The oyster was extremely big, not what I expected at all. It’s probably one of the best baked oysters I’ve ever had. It was flavoured very nicely and did not feel heavy with cheese like how most other places would make it. This is something I would definitely order again!
Since I went during lunch time, they have a list of lunch specials that are reasonably price between $10-$12. I had their Special C which consist of sushi and sashimi along with miso soup and salad. Very filling.
Never been disappointed in the service here and the food arrives quickly. Definitely good place to eat if you only have an hour lunch break!

April 2010 — "This is our favourite restaurant! we have been going there for years, the staff is always friendly and the food is always good and consistent. Our only wish is that they were open before 5pm so we could stop on our way home from work."

December 2009 — "For an on the spot sushi place on a Sunday afternoon, Maruju Sushi was the one restaurant that was open and available. This restaurant is located right before the bridge heading to Chinatown. They even had the bento boxes for lunch time specials. That was pretty much what we had, with some extra sushi pieces on the side and some tataki. It was good, but the food truly lacks consistency. Because we were once regulars, it was clear that the food and the cutting was nicer in the past, and better in the evening. Even though the sushi is not just big balls of rice, it still lacks the clear cutting you expect for good sushi pieces. The one complaint that seems to be consistent when we dine at Maruju Sushi is the service. They are definitely not top of their game and often, the it takes some time for our orders to be made and brought out to us. "

December 2009 — "Maruju is a tiny little restaurant tucked off in a corner on the side of Centre Street right next to Starbucks. They have high quality sushi that is always fresh and satisfying. Our family goes there regularly for dinner and their lunch specials are really a good deal. They use very nice ceramic dishes that have a nice presentation instead of the usual plastic sheets of fake grass on plastic plates. Their prices are fairly average and affordable. "

October 2009 — "My friends and I decided to come here for sushi as per the request of the birthday girl. I ordered the Lunch Special D which was 6 pieces of sashimi and 6 pieces of sushi. It also came with a soup and a salad. We also shared the fresh oyster dish which was so not worth it! It was just over $7 and it only gave you 4 pieces. I don’t know if that’s standard but considering the price, I didn’t think it was justified. I think I’ve also learned today that I’m not a huge sushi fan, in terms of all the different varieties. I like the sashimi the best. Between my meal, the oyster dish and chipping in for the birthday girl’s dinner, it came to $25 per person which I guess is not bad. This is a decent alternative to the other sushi places I’ve been that offer lunch specials so I’m sure we’ll be back. "

A neighbourhood sushi bar, Maruju is tucked away in a strip mall on Centre Street North beside Starbuck's. Its small dining room is decorated in a contemporary Japanese-theme and diners can choose to sit a table, booth or sushi bar. Unique and tradition items are found on the menu including soba, don buri, ramen, sushi and sashimi. The California sake roll and the katsu roll both warrant attention.
