December 2010 — "Long the Frog and Nightgown, which met its maker a few years ago now, the pub has been recreated as Devaney’s Irish Pub. The space has not been changed much if at all. It’s still a tight horseshoe-shaped room with a central bar that used to serve the dining room and the lounge side, back in the day when such things were legally required. The wood panelling is decorated with real pub stuff that has been brought in over the years by the regulars. When we visited, it was nearly full of those same regulars after a pre-Christmas workday.
Service was fast and friendly, in spite of the crowding. We got our drinks within minutes of sitting down, and had our orders placed for food in no time.
The drinks were very good. I ordered the local “Australian Mountain Pepper Berry” from Amber’s Brewing Company. With a bit of a flattish flavour, leavened by a just-noticeable peppery nip, the beer won’t be for everybody, but it’s an enjoyable pint of medium lager with a blueberry hint up front. The Strongbow cider was served nicely cold, without any of the issues that seem to plague draft ciders hereabouts.
The food - we both plumped for the pot pies - was quick and nicely presented in a wide, shallow soup plate, topped with towering puff pastry. The chicken pot pie was very sagey, with a nice balance of chicken pieces and vegetables. The steak and mushroom pie was heavy with rosemary, and a nice mixture of steak, mushrooms and vegetables. While there was plenty of chicken pie filling, there wasn’t quite enough of the beef pie. Another half cup of beef and mushrooms was probably in order. Nevertheless, both pies were tasty, and in terms of flavour were high up there as pub pies go.
The quick dinner was done in 45 minutes, and we were out the door in the pre-Christmas madness. It’s easy to see why Devaney’s has a significant local clientele. In some ways, this is the pub that downtown needs and doesn’t have. But just five minutes away from downtown in old Bonnie Doon, it’s worth the trip."

July 2009 — "Devaney’s Irish Pub is a perfect little neighborhood pub located in Bonny Doon in Edmonton that almost transports visitors to Ireland. The menu is mostly pub food, with only a few healthier eating options. The burgers are great, though a bit pricey. The pizzas are really nice, which may come as a bit of a surprise for an Irish pub, but they take almost an hour because they’re made from scratch. As can only be expected, the fish and chips are absolutely fantastic! Get over the guilt of this guilty pleasure and dive right in. And toss in a pint of Guinness to finish things off! It has an intimate and cozy atmosphere, great vibe and live music on many nights of the week. It’s not a very big place and on a few occasions we’ve actually had to leave because there wasn’t any room to sit. But don’t let that discourage you, give a try another time."
