"Authentic Japanese Ramen"

April 2012 — "After a recent trip to Japan, I developed a taste for delicious Japanese Ramen. We're not talking about the Ichiban kind that you get in a plastic package and cook in the microwave. The Japanese treat their ramen like an art, with a perfect blend of flavourand extra ingredients. And when I heard that Calgary had it's own authentic Ramen house, I couldn't wait to go. My verdict on Muku? It's awesome. I've never had a bad meal there and I've tried at least five of the different ramens. They have different choices that are specific to different regions. My favourite is the spicy tonkotsu ... it comes with the hot sauce on the top so you can reduce the spiciness before you stir it in. My only wish for this place is that they had a larger selection of additional things such as appetizers since I find that sometimes the ramen doesn't entirely fill me up. But other than that, I really enjoy this restaurant -- the service is always friendly and quick, and I've never had to wait more than a couple minutes for a table. "

"I'd prefer spending my money on Mr. Noodles"

November 2011 — "My friend had really built me up and made me think Muku was going to be an amazing experience for my taste buds so I was really excited to finally be trying it out. Sadly, I was very underwhelmed. Muku's small and tight space made it uncomfortable to be in very long and although the service was quick it wasn't overly excellent. I ordered a beef ramen dish of sorts which looked pretty safe however was not delicious. I originally wanted to order the Yakisoba that my friend ordered until I saw there was hardboiled egg in it. Needless to say both dishes weren't overly appetizing in my opinion. My ramen tasted like bland, startchy noodles doused in a buttery cream mess and the meat was disgustingly fatty. Although the prices were reasonable I'd rather have some good ol' Mr. Noodles! "

"More than Ichiban! "

June 2011 — "Muku Japanese ramen is located on 14th St NW, right across from Globefish. I mention this because these two restaurants share the same parking lot. My friend recommended Muku for some good old fashioned Japanese ramen noodles. I have always thought that ramen noodles were fancier ichiban noodles. We ordered some Takiyaki balls, which was more than disappointing. There was ore batter than actual octopus and it just lacked flavor. The actual takoyaki ball but the sauces and the flavours are all found within the sauces. When the ramen noodles came out, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the texture of these noodles were a lot better than the ichiban noodles in the packages that you can get for less than a dollar. I had the pork in the noodles and it was pretty flavorful. I think the secret of this dish is in the soup base an the purity and flavorfulness and balance between all the flavors and proteins. "

"Yummy Ramen!"

August 2010 — "One of my newly discovered favorite ramen place! This small little ramen noodle house is located right next door to its affiliate, Globe Fish. Be sure to hit this place during off hours or you'll be waiting awhile for a seat. I love coming here for a late dinner. You really do get your money's worth and the portion size is just right. They offer these combo dinners where it includes a salad, choice of a small don (rice dish) and ramen for just $11.95. It's a great deal! You can order a regular bowl of ramen for $8.95 but why not op for the combo for just $3.00 more! My favorite combo I usually get is the Unagi don and the Miso Beef Men. This type of ramen is almost like a cold noodle with no soup base. It's delicious and does not feel heavy at all. The beef that it comes with is flavored very well which is probably why this Miso Beef Men taste so good. I have yet to venture off and try their other ramen as it's hard not to order this Miso Beef Men dish. Definitely worth trying! "

"Ramen is like homemade instant noodles"

November 2009 — "I came to Muku for the first time for dinner on a weekday evening with a friend. There weren’t too many people in the restaurant, so the service was good and fast. The restaurant had a laid back feel to it with a basic menu and plastic coverings on the tables. The main items on the menu were ramen, and a few rice dishes. I went with the spicy tonkatsu ramen just to try out their specialty. The ramen wasn’t too bad but it tasted like instant noodles. There were very few toppings on it too so instant ramen at home would have been a lot better because you can put more stuff on it. I think this restaurant is meant to be a quick and cheap noodle shop but overall, it was not very good. I would not recommend it if you’re looking for a decent bowl of noodles."

"Very disappointing"

September 2009 — "I was really excited to try out this place! Muku has a very fast food type of feel to it, from the décor and menu to the taste of the food. It feels like a late night noodle shop that you would go to just because nothing else is open. At first, I thought the food was really cheap. It was $11.95 for a big bowl of ramen, small bowl of sukiyaki beef on rice and a side salad. But after tasting the food, I thought it was rather overpriced. The ramen had a lot of noodles and little ingredients. The ratio is bit off considering the toppings didn’t taste like anything. The ramen and rice dish, although edible, is very food court quality (if even that). What I did like about this restaurant is the friendly servers, the hot tea, and the cider candy they give you at the end of the meal. "

"Tasty Noodles From the Owners of Globefish"
Image

Save Review

July 2009 — "When the owners of Globefish got the chance to expand their incredibly popular restaurant by moving to a larger location, they ingeniously set-up this quaint, honest noodle house in its place. Muku specializes in fresh ramen noodles in pork or miso broths, and on first visit is perfect for a quick lunch, especially for someone wanting noodles, but tired of Vietnamese beef noodle soup. I ordered the pork ramen with pork broth and a side of shrimp dumplings. The broth really was quite distinct, -maybe because I'm so used to the generic broths found in udon soups around Calgary- with a taste that simply can't be defined, but was most definitely enjoyed. The pieces of sliced pork in the soup was equally tasty. Oddly enough my favorite part of the meal were the shrimp dumplings which were small, chewy and delicious. The service was swift and cordial, not quite on par with Globefish, but nonetheless respectable."
