June 2009 — "If you've ever been to Hong Kong, then you will know how popular their little cafe/bakeries are on a hot summer day. While Victoria can proudly boast to have a number of good Chinese food establishments, Gladiolas is the only Hong Kong-style cafe in town with their small selection of Chinese baked goods and strong "silk stocking teas" and ice cold drinks. The strong teas and coffees are quite addictive, especially when your blood sugar is low in the middle of the afternoon. The red bean drink with crushed ice and ice cream is a delicious drink/dessert. As for the food, you'll find a wide selection of noodles, rice dishes, hot pots, sandwiches and appetizers. I'm often amazed how Chinese restaurants manage to do so many different dishes, but they do pull it off quite well. The noodle soups are not the best in town, but they are a decent lunch. The crispy chow mein dishes are excellent and if you're there for dinner, we quite enjoy the hot pots as well. For breakfast, we sometimes enjoy a decadent French Toast with a sweet jam filling. It's so good because it's pretty much deep fried. Not good for the waistline, but pretty yummy. Their dishes are served all day, so it does not matter if you'd like breakfast in the afternoon. This is pretty much a family-run business. The service is friendly and fast. The decor is simple and clean. A good place to go for a tasty meal."
