April 2011 — "Lay Cay's is a Vietnamese restaurant specializing in sub sandwiches in the NE neighborhood of Marlborough just across the street from T&T market. It has long been one of the cheapest places you could go for a Vietnamese sub and the quality is quite good also. For the price you can't beat the subs made here and the deal on the combo meals which include a drink and your choice of spring rolls or won ton soup is quite good. Two people can easily fill up on under $10. The family run business is always friendly and can cater each sub you order to taste. For those who aren't familiar with Vietnamese subs they are basically sandwiches made with French baguettes with an assortment of deli meat, onions, pickled carrots, cilantro, and cucumbers in the middle. It is quite a delicious concoction and has been popular in Calgary for many years."

December 2009 — "I live out of town and always try to make it a point to stop in la cay whenever I come to Calgary. I have been going there for a couple of years and the quality is always consistent. Excellent value for your money - only $3.50 for lunch ... And they are the best subs I have tasted!!"

July 2009 — "If you live, work or are ever around 36ST NE and need something inexpensive and filling, I recommend you check this place out. It's tucked into a small strip mall on the east side of 36ST, north of Memorial Drive. During the lunch hours, some of the seats in this little lunch spot fills up but a majority of the customers grab takeout. The service here is really friendly and fast. This eatery offers good Vietnamese subs. The satay subs they offer are a bit different than what you are used to at other places. For one, they don't taste like satay at all but don't let this deter you because they still taste good. The satay beef actually has a sweet taste and I highly recommend it. The assorted subs are good as well. Each sub only costs $3.50 including tax or you can get a combo, which comes with a wonton soup and and can of pop for $6.00. The soup is very good. The value here is exceptional!"

Description

La Cay is one of those best-known-secrets type of places, tucked away in a strip mall visited mainly by locals. They have a selection of Vietnamese subs on their menu board, all made to order and served fast and cheap. There are a few tables for eating in their casual cafe atmosphere, or get one to go. Beef satay, tofu, chicken, pickled carrot and cilantro are some of the ingredients that are then stuffed into a crusty French roll.
