March 2012 — "My company and I visited Globefish on a weeknight. It was still very busy on a weeknight. We waited about 20 minutes for a table. We were surprised by the new menu as we haven't visited Globefish in a while. We tried out the new Basil Dazzle roll, pacific melody and crab paradise rolls. I had a hotate (Scallop) sashimi. The scallop sashimi at this restaurant is not as good as others. The new rolls we tried today were a little on the salty side and I did not enjoy them as much. The rice was also mushy. We ordered a creme akiyama which is their version of creme brulee with some alcohol drizzled over the top and torched in flame in front of the customers. It smells great and the layer of caramelization on top is yummy. I think the dessert was the best part of the meal."

"Terrible Service"

February 2012 — "We had a just terrible and awful experience at Globefish Sushi a few weeks ago. Poorest service rating I could possibly give it. I cant stress enough, that if the service is bad, I will never go back to a restaurant location ever again. I will not recommend to my friends, and will write a bad service review for it! We were very much looking forward to trying globefish after our friends recommended it to us on several occasions. So one night on a sushi crave we decided to check out what all the hub bub was about! I was not impressed. We waited 20 minutes for them to set us up a table and they werent even busy on a tuesday night. When we were finally seated after the long wait, it took even longer for them to come see us, and take our orders. I was starving so the long wait was not making me very happy. We were quick to order, as we didnt much want to wait any longer, and ended up really not taking our time, I felt like we were either rushing or waiting for something. So we didnt really have the time to enjoy the menu, take our time and order what we really wanted to try. The menu is big and has a huge range of different things. When our food came it was okay, nothing better than what we would have at our usual spot. So I think we will stick with our favorites. "

"Good food always, service so-so"

August 2011 — "We waited a while for a table of six. It was Friday night so the heavy crowd level was a given. They never take reservations which makes dining really hard and it's always a hit and miss. I love ordering speciality rolls from Globefish. They have amazing presentation and all look very yummy. I also enjoy sashimi so I always make sure to order sockeye salmon from Globefish. I believe they have one of the best sockeye salmon in town. I tried the BBQ squid this time, it was a good blend of texture. Crispy on the outside and chewy and soft on the inside. Spirder roll was okay. Takoyaki is always good here, be careful eating this item because it is a little hot on the inside. I would suggest globefish to people that love sashimi and sushi as well as the ones that cannot handle uncooked meat because they do serve a good selection of cooked food."

"Where is my wasabi and ginger?"

July 2011 — "The restaurant is always busy on weeknights no matter which day it was. We arrived around 6:45 and waited for 20 minutes before the party of four of us was seated at a tiny booth made for two. I know it was made for two because there were only table setting for two when they seated us and they grabbed extra two plate settings for us. Also, they were looking for a party of "smith for 2" before they called out our name for four. It's not nice that they cram us into this tiny booth and call it a day. Regardless, we were here to enjoy the food. We ordered a bbq squid to start, it was really good! IT wasn't made too greasy and the sauce was good to pair. I love sashimi so today I tried the salmon trio, which had three diff species of salmon, 3xking salmon, 3x regular salom, 3x atlantic salmon. All 9 pieces of sashimi at the price if 18 dollars. But, where was my ginger and wasabi? We waited for 10 minutes before we could get attention from our server. She seemed to care less about us. We also ordered some rolls such as the crunch and munch roll, spider roll and a california rolll and a crispy california roll. The two california rolls were no good. The crunch and munch roll was probably the best roll out of the ones ordered. The spider roll wasn't as good as anticipated. The flavors all tasted weird together and the texture of the deep fried soft shell crab was a little too soggy. Guess what? All these rolls did not come with any wasabi or ginger either.I am not sure whether they are trying to save on these essential condiments of sushi or they purely forgot. Service was not that great because it was so busy that our server often forgot to bring us things as requested or it was majorly delayed. "

"Great Sushi, service ok"

August 2010 — "After convincing two of my kids that we should go out for lunch somewhere other than the usual fast food joint, we ended up at the Globefish sushi restaurant located in Marda Loop. My kids were initially leary of going to a sushi restaurant as they thought they only served raw fish. However, I managed to get them to buy into the fact that they also serve other cooked foods. When we arrived, we were seated promptly. For my kids, I ordered each of them a lite combination meal, one with Beef teriyaki, and the other with chicken teriyaki. Their meals came with a variety of sushi rolls. I noted that some of the rolls were wrapped with seaweed. Knowing that my kids did not like seaweed, I asked the waitress if she could substitute with another roll or make the wrap without the seaweed. She seemed somewhat surprised by my question, and then advised me that they could not make changes as it was a fixed combo. I think I was more surprised by her answer. Nonetheless, we proceeded with the order. I ordered the sushimi combination. We also ordered appetizers of dumplings and calamari (I asked them to not make put too much of the sauce on the calamari so that it would not be spicy for my kids). We were then offered complimentary miso soup. The soup was good....but I find that miso soup tastes the same in most japanese restaurants. When our food arrived, the kids orders came out and were quite large. I was happy that I ordered the "lite" meals for them as they were plenty big enough for a grown adult. They both enjoyed their teriyaki meals, as well as the dumplings and calamari. My sashimi was also good. I had an assortment of salmon, tuna, shrimp among others. The pieces were fair sized and fresh. The calamari was also very good, but I would probably have them use their full regular sauce next time as I understand it would have been somewhat spicy. For the three of us, our total meal came to around $45.00 plus tip. It was way too much food we ordered and I will know for next time. The atmosphere of the restaurant was lively, and clean. We were given a warning at around 2:00 that the kitchen would be closing. I guess they do and then open up again for dinner. All in all I was happy with this restaurant and its food. Apart from the waitress not being very flexible in substituting my kids meals, I had a good experience."

"Nicely Decorated"

June 2010 — "When I first saw the Kensington location of Globefish Sushi & Izakaya from the outside I wasn't sure what to expect. I thought the restaurant looked a bit rundown from the outside, so I figured the inside would be same. However, my expectations for the restaurant immediately rose when I walked into the place. The inside was actually very sleek and modern. As we waited for a table I looked at the Flames wall, which had signed photos and comments like “Best sushi place in town” written by players. After about 10 minutes, we were led to a plush white booth and handed menus. Each menu item had a picture of the actual dish next to it, which I always find handy. I ordered an avocado roll and a cucumber roll. Our meals were delivered quickly and I found the rolls I ordered fresh and tasty. Overall, I quite enjoyed Globefish and would for sure go back. I can see why the Flames like it. The decor is cool and the food is great."

"Unbelievable!!"

March 2010 — "I am not sure why the previous reviewer knocked the Crazy Buster rolls, but they have to be the best sushi roll I have ever tasted! The flavour is unbelievable and they have just the right amount of spiceyness. The little pieces of roasted garlic and slivers of onion on top are definately a nice touch. The Globefish makes great sushi that is fresh and delicious! I highly recommend giving them a try!"

"I've found a new favorite spot."

February 2010 — "I have been searching for a new sushi place after my favorite one closed down a few months ago. I happened to be driving near Kensington looking for somewhere to eat when I spotted Globefish. When I went in, I was greeted with smiling faces and very friendly people. I was seated right away and when I requested a newspaper, one of the wait staff went and tracked one down for me. Since it was my first time here, but definitely not my last, I stuck with what I know and had the sushi roll combo. It consists of California roll, Dynamite Roll, 4pcs tuna, 4pcs salmon, 2pcs tobiko, & 2pcs prawn sushi. They were amazing!!! I believe I have found my new favorite spot. The waitress gave me some of their top sellers as suggestions for my next visit, such as Mango Paradise, the Lobster Roll and the Red Tuna Carpaccio. I can’t wait to go back!"

"Mushy mushy?"

January 2010 — "Considering Globefish is supposed to be Calgary's best sushi place... I was pretty disappointed. I'll give them another chance as maybe I just didn't order the best rolls. There was a little bit of a wait to get seated which was surprising once once you see how fast you get your food. They must have a very large customer turnaround. The waitress was very nice if not hard to understand. I tried the vegetable gyoza to start. It was pretty good but kind of mushy. I also had the Crispy California roll which was good and somewhat crispy (a small portion though). I also had two specialty rolls. The Rainbow roll was good but too fruity for my liking and the Crazy Buster roll that claimed spiciness didn't have a speck of spiciness to it save one end piece. The Crazy Buster roll was also way too mushy just like the gyoza. Globefish is just an OK sushi place. Definitely not the best in Calgary I hope! "

"My search for the best sushi continues..."

September 2009 — "When my friend suggested we dine at the Marda Loop location of Globefish I was excited since I had heard both good and bad things about the restaurant and wanted to try it out for myself. We went around 1:30pm on a weekday and the place was pretty busy. The atmosphere is quite dark, yet classy, and would probably make a good spot for a date. We ordered the Sushi Shashimi Combo, and it was a fairly good size. It had California and dynamite rolls, as well as pieces of tuna, salmon and prawn. We weren't full afterward, but were not hungry either. Globefish must close the kitchen around 2pm, because three different servers came by to tell us it was last call for food. They also must have thought we hadn't ordered enough since they seemed to think we should be ordering more sushi. Overall, the sushi was pretty good, but it wasn't anything spectacular. My favourite sushi restaurant closed awhile ago, and I've been looking for something comparable to no avail. My search continues!"

"Failed to impress"

September 2009 — "Having heard so many of my friends recommend and talk about Globefish Sushi & Izakaya, I made a stop with a friend to try their menu. Walking into the restaurant, I couldn’t help but feel at awe at the nice booths and the clean, white, sophisticated look for the dining room. As I went through the choices for our order, I just felt overwhelmed and excited to try so many. We finally decided on some Takoyaki balls (Battered Octopus), a chopped scallop roll, their special Autumn Breeze roll (Tuna and salmon roll), and Tuna and Samon Isobe, which looked interesting in print, but was anything but in reality. I even got a fish scale in one of my pieces. It was basically salmon and tuna rolled up in seaweed and fried with wasabi and teriyaki sauce. It was so tiny when it was placed in front of us! The only dish that looked half decent and well presented was their special, leaving us disappointed in our stay. And that meal was worth $40 for two people! Even though the waitress was very cheery, it was a little over the top. Globefish might look great, but the ability to impress me. "

"The best sushi restaurant in Calgary"
Image

Save Review View Photos

June 2009 — "I've been to a lot of sushi restaurants and Globefish is the definitely the best one in Calgary. What's even better is their new location (basically the same location, just across the parking lot in the next building over) in Kensington is larger to accomodate the huge crowds of sushi lovers. They have even upgraded the new location that used to be a chinese restaurant into a very modern lounge type atmosphere. The upgrades and extra tables are a definite plus. I go here quite a bit, and the lineups to get a table are sometimes long, so I would recommend that you make reservations if you can before you go. On my most recent visit, my party of three ordered miso soup, shark fin salad, takoyaki, and beef kimchi udon noodles to start. We always get the takoyaki, these are succulent croquettes filled with small bits of octopus. These a delicious and a definite must order item. The rest of the starters were great too, in particular the shark fin salad was quite enjoyable since it was the first time I had ordered it. After that we followed it up with some surf clam sushi, masago rolls, and spicy tuna cones. All very fresh and well made. Surf clam is sometimes hard to find in Calgary, but I can always count on Globefish to have it and in my opinion they have the best surf clam sushi. Globefish has many special and unique sushi rolls. Everytime I go, I try a different one. This time I tried the mango paradise rolls, they have some mango, red tuna, crab meat and avocado and they were exquisite! Dinner was finished off with my usual favourite dessert mochi, a rice cake filled with ice cream. They are so good just thinking about them makes me drool. If you love sushi, you have to try this place out. Though it's not the most affordable place for sushi, the fresh ingredients they use, variety of special rolls they offer, food presentation, and restaurant ambience make this THE best sushi restaurant in all of Calgary."

"There's a reason why there's always a lineup"

June 2009 — "Globefish is one of those places where you have to get there when it’s open or go for an earlier lunch or dinner unless you want to wait. I caught this place for lunch with a friend. Since I arrived at 12:05, 5 minutes too late, I had to circle around forever looking for a parking spot. I recommend finding a place across the street in the semi-residential areas and walking over. Globefish came out with a lunch menu not too long ago, which is good because ordering a bunch of rolls adds up to around $50 for two people, and that’s just too pricey for a quick lunch. So I ordered the sushi and sashimi combo. It’s pretty good and does the job in filling you up. The service is also good and the atmosphere is nice. The lunch menu is OK but I highly recommend this place for all their other tasty menu items."
