November 2009 — "For a long time I thought there was nowhere to get some good pho in Victoria. For one, there seems to be a shortage of Vietnamese restaurants here. On top of that, the only pho I had tried was at Pho Hoa, and it left me utterly disappointed. However, months later a couple of friends convinced me to try Pho Vy, and I was glad I did. Located directly across the street from Pho Hoa, this busy little mom and pop shop features a bright, eclectic design and a fantastic menu. The place is always hopping whenever I'm there (a good sign), and the service is always courteous and fast. Do not go expecting anything fancy though, it is a very basic place with almost everything on the menu costing less than $10, which suits my student budget just fine. Though I went seeking a good bowl of pho and would recommend just that, I have also fallen for their noodle dishes, and highly recommend the lemongrass chicken on vermicelli. If only they served Vietnamese subs! (I know they aren't authentic but man are they good)"

October 2009 — "The second Vietnamese place I've tried in Victoria upon recommendation and I was not disappointed. Have relocated from Calgary where there are many excellent Vietnamese restaurants, I'd been told that finding a good one in Victoria was a challenge. Well, if you are looking, look no more head straight to Pho Vy. The decor is a bit dated, painted jade green and yellow, and a mirror with carved wood stallions on it, complemented by dolls in traditional Vietnamese dress on pedestals near the ceiling. It all contributed, however, to a cozy atmosphere that was needed on a cold, rainy, fall day. The menu features a good selection of soups and vermicelli dishes. I had grilled pork on rice vermicelli and it came with a spring roll chopped up on top and iceburg lettuce and bean sprouts. It came fast and hot, and the flavour was perfection--the right amount of salty, sweet, hot and sour. My friend had the same but with lemon chicken and she enjoyed hers as well. I saw that for people ordering soup, it arrived with a heaping side plate of bean sprouts, basil leaves and lime wedge. I will definitely be visiting again."

April 2009 — "Pho enthusiasts have a lot of choices when it comes to Vietnamese cuisine in Victoria. With so many establishments to choose from, I first wondered why Pho Vy always looks so busy. They certainly weren't wowing anybody with their decor, which can most kindly be described as cheap & cheerful. Upon entering this small cafe on Fort Street, the mingled smells of pork grilling, spring rolls frying, and that intoxicating broth hint at what is to come.
I am a long-time Pho addict, frequently eating this satisfying and delicious beef noodle soup several times a week. I ordered my usual, Pho with brisket & flank, while my dining companions respectively had Pho with steak & flank and Vermicelli bowl with grilled pork & spring rolls. The food arrives quickly and steaming-fresh, making it an ideal meal for those on the go. The soups are accompanied by the usual selection of condiments: fresh basil and cilantro, lime wedges, jalapeno slices and bean sprouts which you can add to taste. The vermicelli arrives with a mild sauce which hints at fish sauce and vinegar. None of us are small eaters, and we found the portion sizes generous, the regular size pho making for a filling meal on its own.
The food is, in a word, delicious. The pho broth is particularly fragrant and heart-warming, and the soup loaded with noodles and slices of beef. The flank and brisket are tooth-tender, while the lean steak arrives rare and cooks to perfection in the warm broth. My companion's vermicelli bowl offers a different taste combination with every bite, alternating between morsels of beautifully seasoned grilled pork and crisp spring roll bites. The vermicelli is accented by freshly grated carrot, crisp julienned cucumber, bean sprouts and crushed peanuts. Complimentary hot tea washes it all down nicely for me, while my friends both fed their caffeine cravings with iced Vietnamese coffees which arrived freshly brewing in individual drip glasses.
What sets Pho Vy apart from chain restaurants like Pho Hoa (which sits directly across the street) is the authenticity of the food. I haven't had the pleasure of traveling to Vietnam yet, but I have had the privilege of sharing a table with some talented Vietnamese home cooks in Canada. Pho Vy is the next best thing to finding yourself a guest in a Vietnamese kitchen - and with a tab just over $30 for three, it's almost as inexpensive."

The menu at Pho Vy is comprised of all the usual Vietnamese suspects: pho (noodle soup), bun (vermicelli) and rice plates. There is a good vegetarian section as well. Specialities include the spicy noodle soup.
