January 2011 — "I decided to visit this restaurant on the recommendation of a friend. I'd driven past it dozens of times but never thought to stop in. "It looks like a bit of a dive," she warned, "but it's really, really good."
She was right.
I went for dinner here with a friend on a Saturday night and it was packed -- I was glad I made a reservation. Parking was non-existent so I had to park a block and a half away.
I had an Italian combo plate that had gnocchi, fettuccine alfredo and veal parmigiana. I also had an Italian soda which was amazing. As for the meal, my pasta and gnocchi were incredible, but the veal was tough and lacked flavour. I will definitely stick with a pasta dish when I go back. My friend had a pasta dish which she enjoyed thoroughly, and we split an appetizer, which was very decent and falvourful.
The best part? The prices aren't outrageous. Definitely worth the money. I will go back. "

January 2010 — "I love this place. La Viena has wonderful servers, a cozy little atmosphere (murals on the walls, nice colours but probably could get rid of the dusty pretend plants) and consistently delicious food. I've been going to Viena for a long time and have noticed the prices recently went up and some of their deals (1/2 price pasta) have disappeared; not surprising since they are always very busy from word of mouth and good reviews. Apparently the owners are of Asian descent and while the food is Italian, it has a bit of an Asian flare in some of the dishes. I usually have pasta because you get a lot of food for a moderate price (around $11 or $12). This time I decided to share a Bruschetta Starter for $4 - this is one of the nicest bruchetta's in Calgary I think. I chose the Linguine Salmone (smoked salmon, capers and onions, creamy tarragon sauce and tomatoes - $11) and good strong coffee. The menu has great Italian soups, salads, breads, pastas and entrees and there are always a few specialties of the day chalked onto the board. Every person I've taken to La V has thoroughly enjoyed themselves and I would definitely recommend this tiny little restaurant as a destination - make a reservation though or you might not get in."

October 2009 — "Came here for a family dinner the other day and was treated to a reasonably priced and well prepared array of Italian dishes.
We started the meal with a couple of appetizers, -snails in butter sauce, calamari and deep fried gnocci- all of which were respectable if unspectacular.
I then tried the lobster bisque, which when everything was said and done was probably the best thing I had all night. I was incredibly rich, and unlike other places, pieces of lobster were evident throughout.
For my main dish I tried the veal tortelli with white wine, meat and anchovie sauce. It was very well done, with the anchovies not over-whelming the rest of the meal.
Finally, to end the dinner we enjoyed a number of desserts, the standout of which was La Vienna's home-made amaretto cheesecake. It was so rich and cheesy, that to finish an entire piece seems impossible, but must be attempted any way.
The decor at the restaurant is suitably warm with Italian art on the walls. Our server, while incredibly eccentric, did his job well. All though it took awhile to get used to his demeanor."

January 2009 — "I have eaten at La Viena several times, and that in in itself speaks volumes. It is located on Kensington Road NW. It is too far west to be considered part of the trendy part of Kensington, and seems almost hidden in a tiny strip mall beside a doggy daycare. First impressions are that it is a tiny, welcoming, and cozy place. Warm, earthy colors and pleasant lighting invite you to come in and stay awhile. Dinner specials are usually in the $20 to $25 range, but I have never tried one. I always order one of the numerous, less expensive, and decicious pastas offered. There are so many choices and any that I have tried have been great. The servers are efficient and friendly. Wine is moderately priced and available by glass, half litre and bottle. Any time I have gone, La Viena has been filled with very satisfied customers. Reservations are often necessary, even on week days. "
