January 2012 — "We've literally driven by the little Chinese restaurant at the intersection of Cloverdale and Quadra, a thousand times since we've lived in Victoria. Half of those times I've told my wife that we "have to try it sometime" and she's just nodded dismissively like she knew something I didn't. Over the past couple months I'd become more insistent...I mean, it's only a few blocks from our house, shouldn't we at least try it? After a very positive endorsement from one of my facebook friends, calling it the best Chinese she's had in Victoria, I finally went so far as to look the place up on the internet. There you go...lot's of reviews, and almost all of them positive...more than a few REALLY positive. I showed my wife the reviews and she was convinced...a few days later we trying out Halibut House for take-out. We tried the dinner for two, Spring rolls, BBQ Pork Fried Rice, Almond Chicken Chop Suey and Sweet and Sour Lean Pork. The selections in the dinner for two seemed kind of western styled chinese to me, but people had said that it was good introduction to the restaurant, so we went for it. Let me just say, this is one of the worst experiences I've ever had eating Chinese food. Western styled Chinese food like you'd find in small town Alberta. The Chop Suey was the worst of the bunch...the sauce was some sort of clear, gelatin like substance...my wife took one bite and refused to eat any more. The rice was you typical food court, fried rice...and the Sweet and Sour Lean Pork was on par with rest of the meal. I'll say this, we won't be going back. I wouldn't be lying if I said I'd had better "Chinese" at the West Edmonton Mall foodcourt circa 1995 for $4.95 a plate."
