"Delicious Peking Duck"

January 2010 — "We were seated immediately in a cozy corner next to a small fountain. The room is fairly large, and can be somewhat noisy but exudes a certain elegance. The menu offers a wide selection of Chinese dishes, including many seafood dishes. Prices are definitely above what you might expect for the average Chinese restaurant. We ordered half a Peking Duck which is one of the house specials and the beef and green vegetable noodles, which ended up being a generous amount of food for 2 people. The Peking duck comes in 2 courses: first the skin – fried deliciously crispy and served with little pancakes, spring onion, crab-flavored chips and a pleasantly tart and sweet plum sauce. You can make your own little wraps with these ingredients. These wraps were delicious and we absolutely loved them. You can choose how the second course – the meat itself – is prepared: in a sauce with vegetables or the wrap version: chopped and mixed together with water chestnuts among other things, with lettuce leafs to make wraps. We had tried the wrap version previously and so opted to go for the alternative this time. It was really quite tasty, but I must say that I prefer the wrap version. We really liked the flavourful beef and vegetable noodles, but found them to be a bit salty. Unfortunately, I suspect that this dish was liberally seasoned with Monosodium Glutamate (MSG): I suffered a headache and restlessness later – a typical reaction of my body to MSG ingestion. The service was friendly and prompt, but unobtrusive and we enjoyed our time here. "

"A nice place to celebrate"

October 2009 — "We needed a place to celebrate a family gathering and choose Sampan because of its location and size. Located in a small mall in Saanich with lots of parking, this is one of the largest Chinese food restaurants in the area. We had a large group but they had no problem taking us in without a reservation even though they appeared to be very busy. We didn't even wait. They just quickly put table together and seated us. The staff was helpful although they didn't speak very much English. The menu was typical for this type of restaurant but the food was very good and the portions were very large. We were stuffed by the time we were done. Everyone enjoyed their time there. While we did have some difficulty talking to our waitress the owner came out and helped. I would definitely return and bring the whole family again."
