March 2011 — "Shizen Sushi on Government Street is a great intimate Japanese restaurant that offers an authentic Japanese dining experience. Shizen Sushi is very well known in the downtown core near Chinatown and tends to be busy at lunch and dinner times, but I’ve walked by mid-afternoon and noticed that the restaurant is almost full. My friend and I walked into the lively atmosphere restaurant and were greeted right away by the host and seated immediately. They are known for the bento boxes at lunch time offering a little bit of everything, I tried the Tempura bento box which was only $7.95 and for two more dollars I added a California Roll as they are also known for using real crab meat. You can’t beat the prices for such great food. The owner and staff are very pleasant which you can tell as it felt like being at home. If you have the chance to visit Shizen Sushi I would definitely recommend a visit sometime soon."

November 2009 — "I tried Shizen Sushi yesterday for lunch and was quite impressed. We sat in a "room" and shared a boat (miso soup, California roll, Tempura, Teriyaki beef) a dynamite roll, edamame, and some nigiri sushi. Everything tasted fresh and the service was great. Overall, I had a very pleasant meal and would easily recommend it to others."

October 2009 — "I lived in Victoria for a while before I noticed this little restaurant on Government Street, and it was even longer before I ate there. I wish I had tried it earlier, though, since it turns out to be one of the best sushi joints in town. Once through the small storefront, I was surprised by the restaurant's stylish decor. Unfortunately, though, after a few visits I've noticed there are often long waits, even when the place appears somewhat empty. Aside from some slow service, however, Shizen offers a pleasant atmosphere, friendly staff, and quality food. I generally order sushi rolls and have never been disappointed in what I get, also their seared tuna is fantastic. The prices are average for sushi in Victoria, which by the way, is ridiculous compared to prices in Vancouver. All in all, a great place to grab some quality sushi while touring Victoria's historic downtown."

March 2009 — "Shizen sushi is apparently a very popular lunch spot although I have had better sushi and service elsewhere. If you haven’t made a lunch reservation you will most likely have to sit at the sushi bar which is not the most comfortable place as the chairs are too high for the countertop. The menu carried all the usual sushi favorites and they have a special lunch bento box. The prices were decent, not the lowest but around what you would expect. The sushi was tasty and fresh (made right before your eyes if you get stuck sitting at the sushi bar). I would not recommend the vegetarian gyoza though. If you can get over the fact that they have a green wrapper and try them they are quite bland.
The service was quite slow and the servers were quite impatient. You literally have to flag them down to get more tea. The restaurant itself is very packed with tables and has multiple levels-there is even an upstairs dining area. I might go back and try Shizen sushi if I was in the area but I definitely wouldn’t go out of my way to eat there again.

A classic Japanese decor complements a classic Japanese menu at Shizen. Choose to sit at the sushi bar, tatami room or floor seating. They are located near Victoria's Chinatown.
