April 2011 — "You walk into this place and it's like stepping into a psychedelic future. The decor is like I've never seen with lighting fixtures that seem to have a mirror making it looking like it's raining light bulbs. One wall has a glass enclosed row of fire. Metal mesh separates some areas of booths. The hostess seated us and our server promptly took our order from one of the most original menus I've seen in a while. We had the avocado spring rolls ($8.99), ahi tuna flatbread ($12.99) and butternut squash ravioli ($15.99) and 18 oz of Angry Bald Man craft draft beer ($6.50). The spring rolls came with an awesome mango dipping sauce. The flatbread was 6 small medium size pieces each with a slice of roma tomato, raw ahi tuna, cilantro, and pickled purple onion all topped with a sesame oil mayo. It was unbelievable tasting. The ravioli was made with fresh pasta, topped with spinach, tomatoes, pesto cream sauce and fresh parmesan. It too was unbelievable. For the expensive looking contemporary decor and taste of the food I was expecting it to cost way more. My wife went to the ladies bathroom and said it alone was worth the trip. Each stall was private with walls to the roof. This place is probably not on people's mind when they are in that area because there are other popular places nearby such as Joey Tomatoes and Earl's. Go right past those places and try something different. You won't regret it."

"Great Atmosphere / Food O.K."

August 2010 — "My first thought when walking in the place was "Wow", as the ambience and mood of the place is very classy and trendy. Surprisingly, we went on a Friday at lunch and it wasn’t very busy. This brings me to my next comment. The menu selection was interesting but when the food arrived it wasn’t much to write home about. While still filling the void, it wasn’t worth the higher than average price that was paid. I will give it another chance being it was my first time."

"End to mixed reviews"

Save Review

July 2010 — "I was looking at the mixed reviews posted on this site and the overall score for this restaurant and was not impressed. One thing i noticed however were that the negative reviews were older than the positive ones and included things that sound reasonable for a new restaurant, so i went with the family and decided to give flatiron a chance while praying for it to be a lunch success considering we were only going to the NE to be at sunridge mall for my son. The menu items were delightfully various and our party of 4 was able to find something that each of us were interested in. The items were pricey, but seemed fair when we received them because my steak sandwich was delicious! The kids were very pleased with there selections as well and my husband had only a minor complaint which was quickly resolved even though it was a misunderstanding on his part. Service was very good although it did sometimes seem as though the servers followed a strict plan that looked stressful even with only a few tables occupied. I did however notice a few new employee's carrying training books and was surprised when one of the male's who i assumed was leaving after placing forks and knives on the table asked us how our lunch was going and was very friendly. The bill did turn up a bit passed what we were looking for food-wise, but we were more than happy to up it with a tip due to a good experience. My only complaint is the music in the place, but i suppose i am very picky when it comes to what i listen to."

"Classy and Unpretentious...Fantastic evening"

June 2009 — "My family and I dined at the FlatIron for the first time since its opening, and were EXTREMELY pleased with the experience! All the staff I came in contact with was very friendly and warm, including the manager, who stopped by to say hello. The restaurant layout and decor is very eye-catching and unique, but contrary to my first impression, Flatiron was neither pretentious or overpriced... it was thursday and their delicious mojitos were on special for $3.75! Our server was helpful and engaging, helping my picky husband find something he'd enjoy off their recently updated (as I was informed) menus. The food was really great and all came out in less than 20 minutes! Definately going to recommend this place to friends and family!!!"

"My New Favorite Restaurant!"

February 2009 — "I've never actually written or even been completed to review a restaurant but after eating at Flatiron I felt I needed to tell someone how much I enjoyed it. The ambiance was great I loved the decor and the mood, and you need to check out the bathrooms they are fantastic! I live in the NE and it's great to have a higher end restaurant to go to without having to go downtown all the time. But I heeded the words of my wise husband and waited until we tried the drinks and food before declaring that I would be back all the time. And the food did not disappoint! The flavors were creative and well paired. The dishes are interesting and a refreshing change from the same old at Joey's, Earls and the likes. It has been awhile since I have been as satisfied with the food as I was here. The drinks were a little pricier then some places, but I am willing to pay a little more for drinks if my food is going to be amazing and the ambiance great! I will definitely be back and will suggest it to all my friends!"

January 2009 — "We went for our office Christmas party and were treated to slow service, rude staff, and very bland, boring food. Very noisy too. The food was very overpriced and the drinks were small and expensive. We all left feeling ripped off. "

"Just walk away"

January 2009 — "We were planning to go to the Oriental Phoenix but to our surprise it was gone and the Flatiron was there instead. The Flatiron has been in operation now for 2 months but interior looks like its been longer (a bit of dust, broken light pendants, gouges in table surface). Dispite the appearance and the overly loud music in the bar area we decided to give it a try, MISTAKE.. We ordered the fondue $19 (you get about an inch of cheese and the remnants of the condiment bar) For an extra $15 you get shrimp and pruscuito, if you ask for more cheese that will cost you another $15 (which they neglect to mention till the bill shows up). The service was subpar, our waiter had 2 tables and that seemed to be too much for him to handle. So if your thinking of trying this spot out, DO NOT. There are lots of other alternatives to try, I wish we did. "

"Christmas Party!"
Image

Save Review

December 2008 — "We noticed the new restaurant/bar called Flatiron while driving by it on Barlow Trail and thought tonight might be the night where we try it out. You could say that it was trying to be like Earl's, but it was very "green" as a restaurant. Food was extremely overpriced, as well as the drinks. Nine dollars for an import beer in a bottle is somewhat steep for an establishment in northeast Calgary right off a freeway... Service was good, but the menu was limited. The restaurant offers about 10 appetizers, 3 sandwich/burgers, a few entrees and desserts. I don't mind restaurants that offer a limited selection if everything is top notch, but this isn't that kind of restaurant. We ordered some wings, they were marinated in garlic and soya sauce with a side of chili sauce and pickled zucchini. The wings seemed to be overcooked and perhaps they were actually brown meat. The salad I ordered was called the Tomato Stack. It had balsamic vinegar over four heirloom tomatoes, stuffed with goat cheese. I expected better, especially since there was something incredibly crunchy in the cheese. The worst part was that we were seated right in the middle of a Christmas staff party. Everyone around us was from that party, the music was super loud like a rave and the only redeeming factor was our incredibly young-looking, overzealous waiter who obviously had no other tables at the time. I don't think we'll be back seeing as there are tons of restaurants around that area. "

January 2008 — "This place looks great... but that is as far as it goes and it shows. We headed for lunch on Sunday afternoon- should have known as it looked closed, it was open with 2 other party's inside we just left Earls and Moxies due to long wait times. The Menu selection is beyond limited, and the prices are outrageous especially considering the number of resturants in the area. Our flat ware had soap spots, and the hostess was going around steaming and wipeing wine glasses that were allready on the tables to get rid of the soap spots. I had the AAA flatiron burger $13.00 very plain jane to add cheese, mushrooms, and bacon add $3.50 might as well order a $25.00 steak. Husband had the Chicken sandwich $16.00 it was ok, but really not worth the money. Neither entree was anything we would look forward to ordering again. We asked for garlic mayo to dip fries wich set us back $2.00 each. So 1 pop, 2 nothing special entrees, and 2 garlic mayo's brought the lunch bill to $40.00 Skip it unless you are going to spend a bundle on steak or salmon. Don't go with a picky eater as there are only about 12 enteree selections, and the appys are the same price as a full meal. It is beautiful inside, I will give it that. "
