February 2012 — "I visited Earls(westhills)on a Sunday for lunch, and the restaurant was nice and we were seated quickly. Earls seems to be hit or miss on the food, sometimes it is great, and sometimes it isn't. This time we ordered the sirloin steak and pancakes with strawberry sauce. Unfortunately the steak was not that great and was chewy (and it cost $23!). The pancakes were good, but I did have to pay extra for the strawberry, and I literally got one teaspoon of sauce. Wasn't thrilled with the experience, because our waitress messed up our bill, and was slow bringing things we asked her for - but maybe she was new? If you go here don't order the sirloin steak."

"Willow Park Location"

February 2012 — "When I want reliably good food I tend to head to Earls. I've been to most of the locations across the city, but hadn't been to the Willow Park one yet. We went around 5:30 on a Friday night and sat in the lounge. It was already pretty busy. We got a nice booth at the back and our server greeted us right away. We started with hot wings, and as usual, they were delicious. I decided to try something different and went for the featured Bronx Burger for my main. The burger had beer battered onion rings, roasted garlic aioli, red pepper relish, aged white cheddar and rocket greens on it. It was pretty good and really filling. I couldn't even eat all of my fries. My wife got the bourbon top sirloin steak with asparagus and potatoes. I ate her leftovers later that night for a snack and it was good too. The service was top-notch and the experience was a good one. Definitely will go back."

"Dalhousie Earls"

December 2011 — "We were looking for somewhere to dine in the NW area of Dalhousie and happened upon the Earls there. It was about 6 pm on a weeknight so it wasn't too busy and we got a table in just a couple minutes. Our server was pretty good, he kept our drinks topped up and took our order pretty quickly. I was craving a burger so got that with fries. I enjoy the Earls burger because it is pretty hearty and consistently pretty good no matter what location you are at. My wife had the Hunter Style Chicken, a seasonal special, so I tried it. It was really good too. The noise level was average in there, but the tables were quite close together. Overall, the experience was a good one and what I would expect from an Earls. If I'm in the Dalhousie area again I would not hesitate to eat here."

"Great patio!"

August 2011 — "I generally go to the Earls downtown or in Westhills but I decided to try the 4th street location with a friend as we were already in the neighbourhood. I must say, on a warm summer day they have the ultimate patio! I also never realized before that they had great light meal options, which is all we were looking for after a nice long massage. We both ordered their soup, salad and bread combo and man was it delicious, cheap and suprisingly filling! They fill the plate with salad, either ceasar or spring mix (delicious fruit, nut, cheese and vinagarette salad), give a generous bowl of soup (we both had the delicious potato leek) and a giant piece of rosemary infused bread. I must say I was quite emersed in my food and perfect location on the patio, good job Earls! "

"Paying For Nice Decor"

May 2011 — "I’ve been to a number of Earl’s in the past and the service seems like it’s a hit and miss. Sometimes you get good service and other times you rarely see your server. I went to the earls on 16th Ave and looked around the whole restaurant. This is my first time at this location. Earls is usually known for their nice décor, dim lighting and fun atmosphere which seems to be what you are paying for mostly. We were greeted and seated promptly by the hostess. I had the Mediterranean Linguini with Chicken which the server told me was a healthier dish. The dish was a bit runny and I was little disappointed because there didn’t seem too much in the dish besides the pasta, a few olives and some tomatoes. The chocolate sticky toffee pudding was delicious but we waited almost fifteen minutes to get it. Our server was ok. She didn’t give us extraordinary service but there wasn’t really too much to complain about either. "

This is my first time at this location and to be honest, I was a little disappointed. Earl’s is usually known for their nice décor, dim lighting and fun atmosphere which seems to be mostly what you are paying for. However, the tables were packed into this small restaurant like sardines and I just didn’t really get the same hip and trendy vibe I get from the other earl’s. I had the Mediterranean Linguine with Chicken which the server told me was a healthier dish. The dish was a bit runny and I was little disappointed because there didn’t seem too much in the dish besides the pasta, a few olives and some tomatoes. "This Earl's was Quieter than Most and Good"

April 2011 — "Earl's at Dalhousie has been, in the past, quite a noisy restaurant but it appears they have changed the configuration somewhat - as well, we sat on the lounge side near the back underneath a dropped ceiling which likely buffered the noise a bit. I quite liked the lounge atmosphere - the funky lamp shades, glowing pretend candles on the tables and the cozy booth ended up being exactly what we wanted. We started by sharing Edamane Beans which are steamed and tossed in sea salt for $8.00. They weren't bad although they seemed oddly greasy...not sure how if they are steamed but they weren't quite as crunchy as I'm used to. Nevertheless they were pretty good. I decided on the Human Kung Pao because I could have it as a vegetarian meal - for $13 it was a combination of spicy ginger soy sauce (I went with 5 level of spiciness and it was spicy with 5 hunan peppers!!), seared veggies, fried noodles and peanuts. Again, it was pretty good but I was surprised that the noodles seemed a bit soggy and the veggies seemed a little overcooked. Overall it was tasty enough but I've definitely had this dish before at Earl's and it was much nicer so maybe just an off day in the kitchen. The service was incredibly friendly and fast and the place is always clean. I recommend this location."

April 2011 — "I have always loved Earl's because they always strive to maintain a high quality of excellence in everything they do. You can always expect a good experience paired with amazing food every time you go. The Earl's on 16th Avenue NW is especially good. The open layout and warm atmosphere makes it the perfect place to have a meal with friends, family or a date. The servers are always well put together and friendly and the experience is one of elegance and class crossed with a trendy style, void of the arrogance you sometimes find in other modern chain restaurants. Prices are fair and the selection is great with something to suite everyone. On this visit, we had the dynamite roll as an appy which is a delicious sushi roll containing tempura prawn, covered in a spicy dynamite sauce and rolled in black sesame seeds! For my main, I had their feature pizza with prawns and pesto. The hand tossed, thin crust was amazing! Great food, great service, great atmosphere. Earl's is a hit every time! "

"Service could be better."

April 2011 — "I took my girlfriend to Earl's for dinner at the 16th Avenue location near SAIT. The food is usually pretty good and the bill is generally pretty decent. We drank mojitos, which were really tasty! Not to sweet and not too minty. Just right! The service was a bit lacking though. I find that Earl's sometimes focuses too much on what their servers look like instead of hiring people that are actually good at serving. I found the service was slow and a little bit incompetent. Our server didn't know much about the menu, so it's possible she may have been new. The washrooms were immaculate and really cool. It's neat when you go to a restaurant and the washrooms alone are an experience! I ordered the Los Cabos tacos for my meal and there were two soft shelled tacos standing up on the plate in little metal holders. Cool! They were fresh an delicious. I would definitely have them again, but since they are a feature, I don't think they are a full time part of the menu. Good place for dinner. "

April 2011 — "We checked out Earl's at Dalhousie Station. I was pleasantly surprised that we could hear each other without too much trouble. I found that the section farthest away from the door in the lounge is the best for conversation. The ceiling is lower and the sound doesn't reverberate around like it does in the main section. I ordered the Half Combo. It was a half rack of pork ribs and chicken. ($23.50) We started with Edamame Beans. There were a more beans than we could eat and they were nice and salty. The ribs were good too. Lots of meat on the bones and very juicy. The chicken was very good too. All in all, I found the meal to be delicious. The server was very friendly with a good sense of humor. She really seemed to care and didn't mind answering my many questions. Honeybrown ale was on for $3.99 a pint. Can't beat that. A great experience! "

January 2011 — "I went to Earl's downtown on Stephen Avenue for dinner. I have been to Earl’s many times and find it to be a good standby when you need a central place to meet that can cater to a variety of palettes and you can’t think of anywhere else. As with all downtown places, parking is a challenge. The restaurant is clean and trendy inside. It was busy but the noise level was bearable. Service was good and the food looked, and tasted great. I chose a pasta dish was very filling, and my friends reported their pizzas were tasty and the salads felt healthy and fresh. I did find the prices were a bit on the high side for the amount you got, but I imagine the restaurant’s modern décor needs to be paid for somehow. I would not hesitate to go to Earl’s again and do recommend it as a good fall-back restaurant. "

"Loud Open Concept"
Image

Save Review

December 2010 — "The Earls at Dalhousie Station in Calgary still looks modern and sophisticated but its dining area is unnecessarily loud. The restaurant is dark and moody and all the tables are open concept occupying a uniform level. This has the effect of creating an extremely loud atmosphere and without any privacy. In some cases, separate tables seem set-up next to each other cafeteria style. Despite this unfortunate effect, service and food are both good, as should be expected from an Earls restaurant. I started with the hot wings. Slightly overpriced at $11, they tasted as good as I remembered them. It’s nice to get wings served with dip and vegetables unlike most pubs. Preferring a cheap $12 burger in lieu of one of their more expensive mains, I ordered the Bigger Better ½ pounder. Stuffed with vegetables and a nice juicy patty, it was a pretty good selection. Earls is at the upper end of casual dining franchises but I do not recommend the Dalhousie Station location purely based on the loud layout."

November 2010 — "I went to Earls on Stephen Avenue for lunch with some girlfriends. The experience was wonderful. I love the atmosphere of the place as soon as you walk in. It's so urban and modern. Our hostess greeted us with a smile and found us a table pretty quickly considering how busy it was. They seemed quite organized and on the ball. We ordered the dynamite roll as our starter to share. It was so beautifully presented and was the perfect item for us 3 to share! I had a glass of merlot and was surprised to see that our young server knew so much about the wine list and wine in general! How refreshing! My main dish was the chicken and brie sandwich. It was nothing short of amazing! It was a ciabatta bun with a grilled chicken breast, melted brie, apple, mayo and a sweet fig jam! YUM! I had it with a side of mixed greens which made for a healthy, delicious meal. The service was flawless, the food was great and we were all very happy with the experience. What a great location! "

"Why do I keep coming back to the Tin Palace?""

November 2010 — "Beyond it being close to my work I really don’t have an answer. The food continues to feel overpriced for what it is, and a pint costs more than the pub across the street. In any case, I ended up here for dinner with friends last week, and ordered some edamame and their dynamite shrimp rolls. The edamame was extremely salty, while the shrimp roll was surprisingly adequate. Not great by any means, considering I could have gone to a sushi place to get something far superior for the same price, but respectable. I had a pint of hoegarrden with my meal, which thankfully was not only served in a giant custom glass, but was ice cold and properly poured. Furthermore, our server was pretty good at making sure everything was taken care of. Nothing special, but decent nonetheless. Like every other Earls in town, this place is alright, but why the prices need to be as high as they are, are beyond me."

"Earls Westhills - Very Noisy, but Okay Food"
Image

Save Review

August 2010 — "I had the occasion to dine at Earls Westhills for dinner one evening with a few family members. We got there around time for the dinner rush, and the restaurant was packed - mainly with families. We had a fairly large round table, which was unfortunate because it was impossible to carry on a conversation with anyone besides the person sitting right next to you. Not only was the chatter of other patrons loud, the music was turned up so loud that it seemed everyone, even at the small tables, had to yell at one another in order to communicate. We ordered the calamari and the dry ribs to start. The calamari was very good, but the dry ribs were beyond disappointing. They had hardly any meat on them and it seemed as if the kitchen staff thought they could compensate for the lack of meat by overloading them with salt. When it came time to order the main course, I decided on the grilled chicken and baked brie ciabatta sandwich. It was very good, although the portion was slightly larger than I was able to eat in one sitting. I definitely have mixed feelings about that particular dining experience. I'm not sure I would go back to that particular location just because of the noise factor."

April 2010 — "I've gone to Earls Bankers Hall location twice for lunch recently with a friend and I've been extremely impressed. I hadn't been to Earls in years, and the first time we met for lunch we got there around 11:30 (you have to be there early or you're not going to get a seat!) and were seated in the restaurant. Our server was very friendly and attentive. On my friend's advice I ordered the chicken and brie sandwich. It was so good I ordered it when we went back the next week. Our food came out quickly, which is really important for a downtown lunch spot. One could easily enjoy a good meal within an hour. We also had the calamari to start on one of our visits and it was very good as well. On our second visit I arrived at 11:40 and it was so full I thought we were out of luck, but managed to find a seat in the bar area. Our server was wonderful and despite the crowds and noise we had a great lunch. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone working in the downtown area for either lunch, dinner or after work drinks!"

February 2010 — "We found our selves up in Westhills waiting for our movie to start and realized we were starving so headed off to Earls. Both my wife and I ordered their hamburger and fries with a beer. I have to say - I like my burgers. I pretty much order a burger in every single restaurant I go to. And this had to have been one of the best burgers I have had in long time! It was juicy, and so good! And I was very happy to say that they have finally changed their fries back to regular fries instead of those skimpy things they used to call fries a couple of years ago! Even my wife raved about it and finished the whole thing! We order a brownie type thing for dessert, it was also delicious! The service was fantastic - and I can't wait to go back! I have to say in today's economy it was so nice to go out and have a great meal and great service! It isn't often that you can walk away totally satisfied! Great job Earls! "

November 2009 — "I went to Earl's for the first time even though I've lived in Calgary for two and a half years now. I've never really heard good things about Earl's but I decided to give it a try recently because it was close by and easy. I went to the location on 16th ave NW. I had the Cajun Chicken. It was OK at best. The cajun spice wasn't as spicy as I would have liked. The chicken was cooked properly so that was good. The coleslaw that the chicken came with was not creamy at all and very dry for coleslaw and I didn't expect this. It was also OK. For dessert I had the toffee cake... surprise surprise, it was only OK. Just as suspected Earl's is only an OK restaurant and is pretty sub par when compared to similar restaurants."

June 2009 — "Went to the "Tin Palace" location on 4th Street for lunch. Once you walk in, you'll notice that it seems very high end for an Earls location, probably because it's in the trendy area of Mission and so close to downtown. The inside is very nice with a large lounge and huge dining area. Being a rare summer month in Calgary, we decided to sit outside on their patio to take in the summer rays. The patio is very nice and tucked away in a quiet location. I had the cajun chicken sandwich, a very good meal that is not only filling but easy on the wallet too. I also ordered a blended mojito to sip on along with the meal. Nothing beats lounging around on the patio in the summer, sipping on a cocktail, soaking in some sun and enjoying great food and company. Hurry there now and enjoy the patio experience at the Earls "Tin Palace" location before the summer is over!"

May 2009 — "I hadn't been to the Earl's at 16th Avenue and 10th Street NW for several years so had not seen their recent renovations. Upon entering I was surprised that it had a very contemporary lounge-like feel. We were promptly greeted and seated at a booth by the window. The server took a few minutes to greet us, but that was ok. By the time she came we had decided what to have. I had the Sicilian Pizza, while my wife had the Mediterranean linguine with chicken. Both dishes were very delicious. The server had warned me that the pizza was very spicy and it was, but it wasn't too bad. The place was very busy, but we were in and out within an hour and our entire experience met our expectations. In fact, I think the pasta was even better at this location, as it had a lot more sauce on it. We will definitely be checking out this location again."

December 2008 — "A group of us recently went to the Earls in Westhills for a staff lunch. Our server was top-notch, she was only there when necessary and wasn't interfering in our business lunch. It was obviously shortly after the lunch rush, but we felt like we were getting very great service by our server. The food tasted fantastic and was very well-presented. Everyone at the table of six was quite pleased with their meals, which set a great mood for the outing. I chose to dine on the chicken feature and it was perfect. As for my coworkers, apparently the seafood was cooked perfectly, the pizzas were delicious and the salads were fantastic. No one had anything to complain about the food. In fact, the entire dining experience was relaxing and exactly what we were looking for. I hope that the next time I go to an Earl's for lunch, I get the same type of service and quality of food."

"An Awkward Affair"

Save Review

November 2008 — "My girlfriend and I decided to dine at Earl's off of Barlow not only because it is close to our house, but also because we'd had some great dining experiences there. We usually choose to sit in the lounge because it's pretty low key and casual. They have sports on the TVs and the booths are comfortable. On our last visit to this restaurant we were greeted by our server, who was friendly but a little too casual in her attitude - she acted like we were one of her coworkers, not a patron of the restaurant. We ordered a bottle of wine and I got the beef dip special, while my girlfriend ordered the Jeera Chicken Curry. After about 5-10 minutes, the server came over to say that they had run out of the wine we had ordered, but that they were upstairs looking for it. After about 15 minutes and two glasses of water each, we were surprised to see that our meals arrived before our wine. The server was very apologetic and commented that the food arrived "very quickly!" She then presented us with a bottle of wine while we ate our meal. A couple of minutes later a man approached our table to ask how the wine was. I assume he was the manager or shift leader.... We told him everything was just great and he seemed quite relieved and informed us that they had run out of or their delivery hadn't arrived of the wine we had ordered and he had instead given us a "Reserve" wine - which is a better one, he pointed out. We hadn't noticed it was a different wine, but had thought it was very good. Our meals were very good. The beef dip was mouthwatering and the au jus was delicious. My girlfriend really enjoyed her chicken curry too and I thought her naan bread was delicious! However, when we were dining we couldn't help but notice the manager/leader looking over at our table nervously. The server came over and told us she hadn't known it was a different wine and apologized. When we were ready to leave our server presented us with our bill and I was slightly amused to find that we had indeed been charged more for this replacement bottle of wine than the wine we had originally ordered. It was only a few dollars, but you'd think since they didn't tell us before we drank it that it was the wrong bottle of wine, they couldn't charge us for the more expensive bottle. I wasn't surprised with this little detail since we'd been getting nervous looks. Unfortunately, the price difference in the wine came out of the server's tip and I underlined the wine price and put a question mark. Hopefully next time they run out of something, they inform the guest before presenting them with something that they didn't order and then charge them more for the restaurant's own mistake."

"a sure thing"

February 2008 — "I've visited the Dalhousie location a number of times over the years and it has always been a good restaurant when I want a "sure thing". They have consistently good food and always decent service. They have recently gone through an extensive renovation which has really opened up the restaurant. All in all I would recommend it to anybody looking for a no-risk meal."

"Quality Food but So-So Service"

May 2007 — "I have gone to the Dalhousie Earls many times although, recently I have not been enjoying it as much as I used too. The atmosphere is okay except that during busy times it is extremely noisy, making it difficult to carry on a conversation. The service is not great. The last few times I have gone, the waiter and waitress were not personable and were not helpful when asking about menu items. I think this may be because the Dalhousie Earls has just hired new servers and they do not have much experience. Hopefully in a few months their service will be better. The menu is continually changing; they are adding items and getting rid of items. The change is nice, although it is disappointing to go there in hopes of getting your favorite sandwich and finding out that they no longer make it. Also, they have recently increased the price of menu items. In terms of the food quality, it is usually very good. They give the food that little extra touch that makes it a higher quality then its competing restaurants. For example, their green salad is topped with craisens, pumpkin seeds and grape tomatoes. They also present the food in an appetizing and artistic manor. "

"great food & service"

April 2007 — "My husband and I enjoyed a night out without the kids last night at Earl's. I must say, we had a great time. We visited the Dalhousie location and our server, Luc, was attentive, efficient and friendly. Being a Tuesday night we were seated right away. Our food came quite quickly and it was great! Depending on what you order Earl's can be a bit pricey, but last night we had an appy, 2 entrees and 2 beer for $49. I felt the food was worth it and we had a really nice time. Thanks! "

August 2006 — "Earl's is never my first choice when thinking of somewhere to eat. I find it overpriced and the service is sometimes annoying! However, since I live near the 16th Ave NW location, I find myself there once in awhile. Whenever I do go, I get a curry or tandoori dish, which I think are made quite well by Earl's. In fact, it's one of the only things on the menu that I find consistently good. Last time I ate there I was very impressed by the Green Curry dish. When I go back (and I know that I will end up there again in a few months, whether I like it or not), I will order one of these specialty dishes again. "

January 2006 — "Boy, did I ever feel unhip when I went to the Earl's Tin Palace on Saturday night. Everyone was dressed to the nines and sipping fancy cocktails, and the majority of people dining there were under 25. We waited for 20 minutes for a table, and when we got one, the very young looking server was efficient but not overly friendly. The food was great -- from the steak wrap appetizer to the yogurt-dill salmon -- though I couldn't shake the feeling that they were trying to get us out the door. "
