March 2011 — "Shiki Sushi located on Blanshard street is one of the many great Japanese restaurants in the downtown area. We were greeted by one of the staff and seated right away. The décor is very modern with an open concept feeling. We arrived during Sushi Happy Hour, which is always a pleasant surprise. Most of the traditional rolls were fifty percent off and a few items from the appetizer menu and liquor menu. There is a little bit of a wait but so worth it. The sushi is so fresh, and they have unique rolls, along with the traditional rolls, and even without being sushi happy hour, the prices are very reasonable for the generous portions.
I had to try their Happy Spicy Tuna Roll, there was white and regular tuna layered on top with a spicy sauce and in the roll was a traditional spicy tuna with avocado and lettuce, it was so good, we even had to order another to take home with us. I did notice the restaurant fill up quickly and then there seemed to be a wait for a table, so going early help and they do recommend reservations. The staff seemed to know a lot of the patrons which is a good sign knowing they have regulars and they are loyal to the restaurant. For three friends to have sushi and enjoy a great evening, I recommend Shiki Sushi.

April 2009 — "It's a hard sell to Victorians, but this recent Vancouver transplant can tell you: there is such a thing as really good but inexpensive sushi! My forays into sushi establishments in Victoria have, to date, confirmed for me that in this city - there is good sushi, and there is cheap sushi, but never do the two meet. I ventured into Shiki Sushi on Fort Street hoping it might break my streak.
My companion and I wandered from our bike ride to find the restaurant relatively quiet on this sunny day. We were quickly settled into a table by the attentive waitstaff. The decor was pleasant and minimalist, with reed curtains on the walls and simple black plastic table covers. Upon using the facilities, however, my partner did mention that it could have been cleaner.
We ordered miso soups, 2 tempura rolls, and the salmon & tuna sashimi. I found myself looking for more variety in the roll menu, with some of the standard favorites (like spicy tuna) conspicuously missing, although they had several house specials that sounded intriguing. At nearly $10/roll, however, we were reluctant to experiment.
The miso soup was typically good. Our sashimi arrived shortly after. The fish was very fresh, and the salmon wild. It was also the perfect temperature, just slightly chilled rather than numbingly cold. The tempura rolls looked nice, with tobiko lining one edge artfully, but the flavour of these was unexceptional.
All in all, our meal was fine but not stand-out. I've paid more, and had worse. Our tab came to $23 after the 10% discount Shiki offers on Sundays, but we left in agreement that had we come in with a full appetite - we would have left much poorer or hungry. It's hard not to compare this to the sushi places we loved and left behind on the mainland, where the selection is much bigger, the prices are lower for every item, and the portions far more generous. At Samurai or Brittania Sushi, that tab would have bought us some tempura and chicken teriyaki as well.
Shiki Sushi isn't going to fill that hole, but I haven't given up on Victoria yet!"
