December 2010 — "Positioned right in the middle of downtown Calgary, I went to the Bear and Kilt after attending a show at the Jack Singer Concert Hall on a Saturday night. The place was about half full and had the Flames game on their numerous television screens. The atmosphere is...interesting to say the least. Customers have to walk down a set of stairs from Stephen Avenue. The ceilings are low, the carpets are thin, but its somehow warm and cozy. Service is alright but most orders seemingly have to be placed at the bar. The group I went with were avid and loyal patrons. They did complain about possible menu price increases. I had a burger and sampled their pizza. Both were acceptable and priced accordingly at just over $10. The staff was also more than happy to add extra sauce at no charge on the pizza. The Bear and Kilt also features some under-sized pool tables for patrons at the back of the pub. Overall, its worth a visit."

February 2009 — "Awesome place. What i really like about it is that you get what you see; a basement pub that is dark, full of regulars, pool tables, dart boards and a surprisingly good selection of beers.
The prices are the most reasonable in town and the food is pretty good. There are lots of comments on this site about the service, but really i haven't had any problems.
I've been going there on and off for about 5 years and every time I go back I forget how comfortable it is in the bar."

August 2006 — "I just had lunch today at the Bear and Kilt for someone's birthday. They were very organized and our meal came in a timely manner, which was important since we only had an hour. To help the process, we had made reservations and choose our meals in advance. I had a veggie burger which was great. Pretty simple, but tasty and only $8. The other meals looked good too. The menu here is your standard pub fare, but there's a good variety. The atmosphere is dark and pub like, being in a basement, and it can get quite smokey. We went at 1pm and it was quite but I've heard it's busy at noon. I've also been here for beers after work and if you like lowkey pubs, then you'll like the bear and kilt. If you're looking for someplace trendy, don't come here."

March 2006 — "The Bear & Kilt is a typical dark pub that is mostly frequented by regulars. You can hide away in the corner and have an intimate experience or gather around the pool table with a bunch of friends. The food is typical pub fare and the service is average. Brad Pitt hung out at this restaurant a few times when he was in Calgary filming a movie last year, so it cannot be that bad. :) "

February 2006 — "I've been here a few times and have had an ok experience, decent (not spectacular by any means) food, cold drinks, good crowd. However, I came here once for lunch and eventually walked out after waiting for an hour after I ordered my food. I'm a pretty understanding person, but the thing that bugged me the most was that the waiter wouldn't even acknowledge our table to apologize or offer any sort of explanation. He blatantly walked in the other direction any time one of us would try to approach him. We went to the bar and explained the situation and the bartender told us our waiter would be over to talk to us. Never happened. As we had to get back to work, we eventually just left without paying for our drinks. We really had no choice though. It still boggles my mind that he could ignore us for that long - he must be a pro at it.
Update - August 2006: I just went here for lunch with co-workers, and since we had a big group, they made us pre-order our food, so obviously they have realized they had a problem with lunch hour wait times and have taken steps to fix it. I had the macaroni and cheese, which was delicious. "

Traditional English pub atmosphere awaits at the Bear & Kilt. Enjoy a lively game of darts or pool and a wide selection of draft beer. The patio looks on Stephen Avenue Mall.
