August 2011 — "One of my favourite things to do in Victoria is to head to Canoe with my wife on a sunny afternoon, and plant myself on a patio chair for a couple of hours (sans kids). We talk, people watch, gaze at the boats as they pass in the harbour, snack on a variety of appetizers and sip hand-crafted beer... does it get much than that? I think not."

"Fantastic Service!"

March 2011 — "Canoe Brewpub on Swift Street near Chinatown is a local brewpub with a fantastic view, staff and food! My friend and I went to the brewpub for Victoria’s “Dine around” to try out the menu as we are new to the area and have heard great reviews about the brewpub. The brewpub faces Victoria’s harbor and when we arrived the hostess was very welcoming and let us choose our sets. Our server was very attentive and informative of the menu and had great suggestions for wine parings. The food was simply amazing, we enjoyed the spinach roasted beet salad which was a perfect size for a small appetizer to share and the porchetta wrapped chicken was fabulous! My friend enjoyed the brick grilled local chicken that was offered from the gluten free menu. Our server again was amazing with a quality check and just checking in to see how we were doing, I like this type of customer service, you feel like you are being taken care of and valued as a guest. We did try the brown ale chocolate cake and again was a perfect size to share for a dessert, just the right amount of sweetness to complete the meal. We will be going back to the Canoe brewpub and looking forward to try their microbrews. "

"Lovely once you are there"

February 2011 — "The Canoe Club was recommended to us by friends who had a great time there. It was a little sketchy getting there. It is on the waterfront but not in the downtown area but more near China Town. There were lots of homeless people on the street and in the parking lot but no one bothered us. The walk down to the restaurant takes you right to the waterfront and as we got to the front door a float plane was skimming just over the top of the building to land at the harbour. While we were there we watched all the activity in the harbour from float planes and ferries to pleasure boaters in huge yachts. The building appears new but looks like an old warehouse with high ceilings and made of red brick. On the right side when you walk in is the restaurant and on the left up the stairs is the pub. We decided on the pub because there were high tables along the window. In the summer this must be a lovely place as there was a huge patio out front. The beer menu featured their own brew and we tried a couple which we enjoyed very much. The menu was a bit of a surprise - not really pub prices unless you just wanted to nibble or have a burger. I had the grilled chicken sandwich which I thoroughly enjoyed but it was a little pricey at $16. My friend had a burger which he said was really good. Overall, it is a lovely place once you get to it and if you are prepared for the prices, it is worth the visit. "

"Great Atmosphere and Food!"

September 2009 — "The Canoe Club is located at the end of a cul-de-sac, near Chinatown, with views of the harbour. They have a fantastic outdoor patio right on the water and often have live music inside. I have never tried any but they are known for making their own beer and they seem to be popular! On this beautiful summer day, we sat on the patio and I ordered the Braised beef short rib & blue cheese burger, and my friend ordered the Panang seafood curry with a couple of drinks. My burger was HUGE (about 3 inches high), moist and delicious! It came with salad and fries and there was more than enough to eat! My friend enjoyed the Panang seafood dish but found it too salty. Overall it was a great environment, our server was prompt and funny, and the food was good. There also seemed to be a great variety on the menu so that everybody could find something to eat that they liked. "

"Good Venue for a large group"

July 2009 — "We used this pub for a birthday gathering and found it was great for out on the patio in the summer. There was about 20 of us and we were in the "Brew Tent" as they call it out on the patio. They have an excellent drink selection including beer and cocktails. I would say they are are the best raspberry mojitos I have ever had. That being said I was not overly impressed by the food, where it is also very expensive. I ordered a burger with caesar salad and both were way over rated for $16! The burger was dry and not much flavour, and the caesar was simply a romaine heart (uncut) with some dressing drizzled over it. I don't think I even ate the salad... My partner had a sandwich on focaccia and it was way too much bread with hardly anything inside, again also lame salad. The appy's were very good and everyone else that ordered an entre was happy with their meal. I am going to give them another try, this time for an entre for sure... just seemed like a burger kind of place..."

"Outdoor Party"

July 2009 — "My lovely husband celebrated his 27th birthday this past July. I was stumped where to throw him a party. Until my best friend suggested the Canoe Club. Great Idea! I called promptly to make reservations on the patio for appx. 15 people. I was quite disappointed to hear that they do not take reservations for the patio, and i was not looking forward to continuing my search. Until, the hostess suggested that we book the 'brew tent.' This is a separate area located outside, underneath a large tent, with room for 30. We loved it, it was private, and very roomy for us/ it did not cost a thing extra to book either. The service however was bad. Slow and very poor. The poor girl perhaps was new but did not clear a plate or glass until we asked her too...so on and so forth. Also, the food i had heard was very good, but the sandwich that i got was terrible. i had the BLAT (bacon lettuce avocado and tomato) it was a hot day, and i was looking forward to a nice fresh sandwich. What i got instead was a massive loaf of old focaccia bread sliced in half, and a few bits on the inside. i could not even get mouth around the bread. I would never order a sandwich or any 'pub food' from that restaurant again. Some of the meals did look wonderful. The Meals looked great, and my friends seemed to love them, as their plates were licked clean at the end of dinner. i think i just chose the wrong meal. I would highly suggest the outdoor 'brew tent' for a party, but cross your fingers for a experienced waitress (especially if you have a large party) and order something expensive.....something you would not normally order, because the cheap stuff, is exactly that. Cheap! Enjoy!"

"Good Beer...decent food...nice atmosphere."

March 2009 — "We headed down the the Canoe Brewpub to meet some friends for a Birthday celebration a couple weekends ago, and spent the evening enjoying food and a few beers in a pleasant atmosphere. I like the Canoe Brewpub...it has a big, open, wood interior, that's great in the winter...and a water front patio for the summer. It was Friday evening, so the place was full of people grabbing drinks and food after a hard week at work...by the time we left a couple hours later, it was packed to capacity with people trying to get their weekend started off right. To start, I decided to grab a sampler of all the beers that were brewed in house. It arrived in a tray with 5 small glasses of their most popular beers and a glass of salted peanuts. Perfect! The peanuts kept me tied over until my food arrived, and there wasn't a single beer that I didn't like. I ordered some Calamari, that was really tasty, and came with a spicy dipping sauce...pretty good. I'm glad I got this instead of the burger. My wife got the burger and was very underwhelmed. Consequently, there was a large portion of here meal left for me to sample, and let me just say this, I'd skip the burger in favor of some other menu item. If you ask me, Canoe is a great place to grab a couple beers. Summer or Winter, day or night...one of the best places in town to sit and sip."

"Best Restaurant in Victoria"

July 2008 — "Some friends from out of town stayed with us recently. We decided to take them to Canoe because we had been here before, and thought they would enjoy the outdoor patio. Well, we were right. Not only was the patio full of sun and sights (it's right on the harbour), but the food and service were excellent as well. In fact, one member of our party said it was the best bacon/cheddar burger they had ever had. There's no question, that this is one of the best places to eat in Victoria. I'm sure you could find better food elsewhere, but Canoe delivers the whole package: good food, great beer and amazing atmosphere. P.S. Just in case you're wondering, I'm not affiliated with this restaurant whatsoever."

"Upscale West Coast Dining (and Drinking)"
Image

Save Review

April 2008 — "Located along Victoria's inner harbour, this restaurant has more than just great food to offer. They brew their own beer, and have four varieties on tap. From the European pilsner dubbed 'Red Canoe' to their signature Beaver Brown Ale, beer enthusiasts will have much to keep them busy at Canoe Club. The building itself was erected in 1894, and the warm ambiance is classically west coast. With the wood paneled walls and patio overlooking the Pacific, it is impossible not to enjoy the feel and atmosphere present at Canoe Club. As far as the menu is concerned, they feature everything from comfort foods to international dishes. Several items featured are made with locally caught seafood, including wild halibut tacos, mussels from Salt Spring Island, and a wild salmon club sandwich. Even after frequenting this restaurant time after time, there are still menu items yet to be tried and, undoubtedly, enjoyed. The staff have never failed to impress with the speed and quality of service, and though wait times are sometimes lengthy, they always pay off."

"Relaxing afternoon"

February 2008 — "We discovered the Canoe Pub by chance after wandering along the inner harbour and we were glad we did. The pub is situated in a heritage building right along the water and has exposed brick and high timber beams which adds so much character. There is an outside seating area which will be great on a good summer's day but we chose the warmth of the inside. The pub brews its own range of beers and I tried the 'Sirens Song Pale Ale' with my BBQ chicken pizza and both meal and beer were great. My partner tried the mussels and 'Red Canoe Lager' and enjoyed the mussel broth but did find some of the mussels a bit 'fishy'. There is a good vibe inside the pub and it made me want to spend the whole afternoon relaxing and enjoying their range of beers. We so enjoyed our afternoon there, that along with a couple of friends, we returned that evening for a beer and found the pub to be quite lively and definitely a favourite for Victorians."
