"Long wait... Great food"
February 2011 — "The wait was tremendously long, but they gave us peanuts while we waited. The food was so delicious, the friend I went with is just as excited to go back as I am! So now we decide Banff over Jasper just because of this restaurant. I can't wait to get back and feed my face again!"

September 2010 — "We went to Magpie and Stump while in Banff as we were craving Mexican food. It feels more like a cowboy restaurant than Mexican, except for the neon light cacti on the walls. It is a casual atmosphere with wooden tables placed closely together. Our server was friendly enough and the drinks we ordered came pretty fast. I had a mango margarita and it was so good. We shared ceviche to start which was a mix of seafood served with nacho chips and salsa. Very interesting and very good. I ordered a chicken burrito for dinner and it came on an enormous plate with refried beans, chips and rice. The burrito was great but I was too full to eat the rice and beans. The food is definitely more Tex Mex than true Mexican but the portion sizes are huge and the food is really good. I would recommend eating at Magpie and Stump if you are looking for a lot of good food for a reasonable price while in Banff. "

August 2010 — "We were looking for a decent place in Banff for dinner after a long day of walking around. We saw that this place was really full and they had really cheap beers (~$3 Coronas). The food portions were huge but they did not taste awesome. We definitely could not finish everything (we ordered 2 dishes for 2 people). I do not know if I would come back again but if I do, I would go for the beer. We had to wait quite a while for our food."

August 2010 — "The Magpie and Stump has two sides, both a restaurant and pub with an old western style ambiance. All tables have a bucket of salted peanuts on the table where they you are to just through your shells on the floor. This makes for a great atmosphere to start, and they have some excellent food to back it up.
I had fajitas where everything was nice and fresh and care was taken to make the meal. This is a great place to enjoy a few drinks, and the margaritas came very highly recommended, and again did not disappoint. They make a few drinks, I forget the name, where a slushy margarita has a corona stuck in the top, where they continue to mix as you drink.
I will visit this spot again on our next visit to Banff, as it really provides something totally different from the other restaurants and pubs in town."

March 2010 — "The Magpie and Stump in Banff has been around for a long time! The prices are great and the place always seems busy. When you first walk into the restaurant, it is dimly lit - I like the intimate feeling of the place. The drink specials are great; we split a half litre of wine Margaritas for $8.75 and they were tasty! I decided to order the Seafood Burrito (the special of the day for $14.95) and I was pleasantly surprised to see the amount of food on my plate! It was filled with a tasty assortment of seafood; unfortunately the dough wrap was a bit mushy and a bit of a turn off for me. Even though it became quite busy, our waiter continued to serve us well - as he said several times, "not a problem!" no matter what we needed. A great little place to visit if you are in Banff!"

December 2009 — "I think everytime I end up in Banff for a meal, I end up at the Magpie! This place is a staple to me, because the prices are reasonable, it is a casual atmosphere and the food is exactly what the doctor ordered after a hard day of skiing!
You really don't need to dress up at all to go here and feels just like a ski lodge. The food is pretty good, though most of it tasted the same, it is great at warming you up and best accompanied with an alcoholic beverage.
Too bad they don't give you free chips when you arrive, but overall a great place and also family friendly during normal meal hours."

August 2007 — "I really like Mexican food and Magpie and Stump looked like a nice place, with the typical authentic wooden chairs, nice atmosphere etc. However, the service was absolutely awful. The place was very full when we went there and we had to wait for about 35 minutes after we ordered, only to discover that there was a misunderstanding between our server and the kitchen, and one of our orders was prepared wrong. The server informed us of the situation, without even an apology and asked us whether we wanted the prepared dish instead. We said we didn't want it, and there started the waiting again. Our food arrived another 25 minutes later and they did not even offer us a discount; actually, not even an apology even after the second wait. Overall, they seem to be taking advantage of the fact that they are relatively low priced compared to many high-end restaurants in Banff and there are so many people during the high season that no matter how bad their service is, it will be filled with people trying to find a reasonably-priced place."

DescriptionA Western-style saloon with a very Mexican flavour, the Magpie and Stump oozes character and is bustling day and night. Its dimly lit wood interior is decorated with a comfortably kitsch mix of Mexican sombreros, mounted animal heads, hanging plants, bottles and neon beer signs. The menu features all the Mexican favourites, from nachos to burritos, and the extensive list of margaritas is an attraction in itself.
