June 2011 — "I was quite impressed by the interior of this restaurant located on MacLeod Trail, as the outside of the building is not quite as inviting. The dishes that we ordered were all amazing. We started with an appetizer - the vegetable pakora, which were delish and came with two dipping sauces. Some of the other dishes we ordered were: Chicken Korma, Lamb Curry, Alloo Gobhi as well as rice and naan. All the food was excellent! The service was great too, as we were there for a really long time chatting with friends. The restaurant is decorated nicely, and have wonderful staff. Would highly recommend visiting this restaurant!"

February 2009 — "I ordered delivery and when it took too long, I called back to enquire and found out it was waiting for me to pick it up. They sent it out to me after I called, and I finally received it 2 hours and 45 min after placing the order. The order was freezing cold and the naan bread stale, and had obviously been prepared hours earlier. When I tried to contact them to tell them, they did not respond. Terrible customer service."

November 2008 — "I have been a loyal customer for years and while yes it is in the basement in a less than desirable area the food and price is good value... I have never been dissappointed or gone away hungry.
Their buffet does offer good variety to satisfy vegetarian, meat & poultry tastes... the crisps with chutney are better than most & naan is superb. I enjoy the saffron rice as opposed to bismati they also serve...
well I'll be going back, again & again... to each their own."

September 2007 — "My sister and I ate at this restaurant a couple years ago. The main problem we had was the service. There was one waitress who pretty much ignored us! She gave us our water and bread at the beginning but then we litterally waited for over 1/2 an hour without being acknowledged by her. We would make eye contact and she would jus twalk on by. We were seriously thinking we were dressed wrong or something. Finally we had to ask about our food and she said it was on it's way. I think we had to wait about 45min + for it. We did receive a coupon in the mail after complaining but have not returned since."

August 2007 — "Been to the Taj Mahal once or twice and it's just OK, but that's about it. Service is OK if a bit sluggish, food is OK but not really consistent or anything amazing and the ambience is OK too. In this city with all the competition around trying to step up the game as far as indian food go's, it's time for this place to put a bit more effort in and catch up. I don't think OK is good enough in Calgary any more. No 'real' complaints, but nothing to rave about either. If you're passing and hungry, try it, but there are lots better than this for your money."

July 2007 — "Some respite having visited several Indian restaurants. What is wrong with Calgary - not one Indian restaurant where I could say the food is good.
Here food was average. They served rotis made of refined flour (of course it is cheaper than whole wheat flour). For vegetarians - lot of potatoes, eggplants in the buffet menu- Whatever happened to spinach , paneer, bhindi the normal stuff. Butter chicken was ok. Cooking felt average to the pallet. On my two visits within a week the menu was the same- a co-incidence - I don't think so.
Seating is clumsy, place not very clean.
Service was with an attitude like 'now that you are here, eat what we have'. They did serve me the maida (refined flour) rotis upon request although they had refined flour (exactly what I was trying to avoid) Naans on the buffet menu. Nobody from staff seemed to smile!!!!"

July 2007 — "I was a regular at Taj Mahal restaurant. Me and my husband went there atleast once a month! Their service was alright, and the food was pretty ok too! The place was in the worst location possible. We never took any friends their because of the location and the ambiance. I've always thought they would think we're cheap, for going to such a place! Anyhow, we went to do a take out because we were running late and the kitchen was just about to close. They turned us down because it was a slow day and the cooks shut down the kitchen early! I was astonished! No good business would ever turn down a customer especially during business hours! "no wonder their slow"!! We ended up going to another Indian Restauant on 4th st sw. And they were closing down aswell! but they gentleman was kind enough to take our order and have it ready within minutes! And going to that place made me realize that theres soo many more Indian restaurants in Calgary that have better Ambiance and Service!! So Its Time For Us To Change Our Favourite Indian Restaurant! "

"Wouldn't Take My Coupon"Tara
June 2007 — "We had a coupon for "Buy one entree, get the second free" at the Taj Mahal. When it came time to order, we told our server about the coupon. He told us that the items we wanted to order were not entrees, but they clearly were, at $20+ per dish. We kept trying other suggestions, and he kept saying "that's not an entree". It was quite ridiculous! We felt like they had lured us in with the coupon and then balked at the offer! The food was okay, but I there are other Indian restaurants that have a tastier menu."

February 2007 — "My friends, family and I have all been frequent patrons of the Taj for the last ten years. I have to agree with the points the other reviewer made, about going through the back door, etc. - but to tell you the truth, I've never thought of it until I read that persons review. Their cooking is so good that we just never think of the "ambience" at all. As the other reviewer said, the ambience and setting isn't that good - but the food is so good I've NEVER thought of that until now. The Taj offers a full buffet, complete with a massive range of Vegetarian items, every day for lunch and every Monday evening - which is when we usually go. The staff is always super friendly, the service is adequate (as the other reviewer said - most of their business seems to be for the buffets, so that must be colouring their service) and the food makes it an all-time favourite. If you're more about food than decor, try it out - you won't be sorry."

November 2006 — "I drive by Taj Mahal restaurant twice a day going to and from work, and yet I have never gone in. Until yesterday. After years of wondering what the restaurant looked like inside (the outside facade is a huge cut-out painting of the real Taj Mahal) my wife and I decided to give it a try.
Entering the restaurant from the poorly lit back alley is not great. Before going downstairs to the restaurant, we had to squeeze by a van where guys were unloading beer for the bar located upstairs. Also, after being seated we waited for ten minutes before we finally had to ask to see some menus (maybe our server assumed that we were going to try the buffet).
The good news is that the food is good. We ordered some veggie samosas and variety of entrees accompanied by rice and Nan bread (and chai). All were flavourful and fresh tasting. The ambience is nice, but a little run down.
Would I recommend Taj Mahal? Sure, but I probably won't go back anytime soon."
