February 2011 — "Maurya is in the Kensington district so definitely go after 6 pm when the parking is free. Maurya has been around for a long time and I've had mixed experiences so I thought I'd finally write a review. My overall impression of Maurya is that it is a solid Indian restaurant with nice decor and decent prices. The meal sizes are decent, although not nearly as large as some of the other local Indian restaurants, and the variety is good. I chose to have the vegetable samosa for $5 (2), followed by Murgh Bharrtha for $15 (chicken with a nice blend of tomato, onion, cilantro, garlic, ginger, garam masala and cream). We shared an order of saffron rice for $4. I had a Rani beer (I think that's how it's spelled) for $5 - I can't say I liked it much -quite sweet and kind of an odd odour. It was worth a try though. Overall the meal was fine and the service was good. A couple of things to think about: Be careful when your meal is perched on top of those pretty little candle warmers - ours tipped within seconds all over the table and there was no effort to replace any of the food by the server. And, if you don't like blinking neon lights from the very tacky OPEN sign, be sure to see where you sit and whether you have to stare into the blinding blinker. The restaurant is clean and the server was quite attentive. "

February 2011 — "We went to Maurya at 6:00 on a Tuesday evening. For the first while we were the only customers, but soon we were joined by a few other people. The server was very friendly and gave us great service. We sat in the little sectioned off area by the windows, but it became apparent that we were both to distracted by the flashing window sign that said the restaurant was open. We moved into the bigger and less intimate area. The ambient Indian music helped add a relaxing and authentic mood. I ordered Lamb Korma (Gosht Shahi Korma) and it tasted great. It was very good on rice. I also tried a beer that was based on an Indian recipe, a little sweeter than most beers, but very good. It cost $5.00. I was impressed with the prices of the wine. Although most seemed to be what you would buy for about $12.00 in the liquor store, the restaurant was only charging between $27 and $29 dollars for all wines. Even the Tinhorn Creek Gwurztraminer was only $28! That is a real bargain! Be careful when spooning out your food as the bowls sit rather precariously on their candle warmers. I managed to tip mine even though I had been warned. Also, you can order your dishes mild, medium, or spicy. The medium was on the verge of being a bit to spicy for me, but still no problem. Check this place out. "

"Tasty Food....But....."

February 2009 — "Upon arriving at Maurya on a Sunday night of a long weekend, we were met by a server that breathlessly told us that it would be five minutes until she could clear a table for us to sit at. Granted, it was after 8pm and they had probably been busy, so we didn't make much of the wait. While we stood at the door, we took a quick look at the guest book and were astonished to read some negative comments clearly displayed. One of them said that the food was stale, another that it was overpriced. We've been to Maurya on several occasions, so we knew what we were getting into, so decided to wait for a table. When we got one our server was very short, but we knew that it was probably because they were slammed and hadn't expected it. In fact, part way through our dining experience, a server/busser came in (around 9:30pm). We ordered the appetizer that consisted of a meat samosa, a vegatable samosa and some pakoras. That was very good, although it took some time to get it. I also ordered a mango lassi, which took about 20 minutes to get. For our mains we ordered a vegetarian dish of cauliflower and potatoes with mixed herbs, beef curry and chicken masala... all dishes were very, very good. We also ordered some naan and some basmati. Every entree took quite a while to get, probably because the kitchen didn't expect the busyness of this Sunday night. They actually offered us free dessert, but we were very full after dinner so declined. Overall, the service wasn't great, but the owners came over to see if things were ok and we couldn't complain about the food, so I guess it was a good experience overall. The bill was well over $70 even with an Entertainment coupon, so that was a bit surprising, but we had some really great leftovers the next day."

"Just Average!"

October 2006 — "I visited Maurya for the first time last weekend and was expecting an above average experience since I have heard good things about this restaurant. However, it wasn't as amazing as I thought it would be. I can't say that anything was wrong with the food, as it was tasty, but compared to other Indian restaurants in this city, such as Mango Shiva or Rajdoot, Maurya was just average. The service was pretty good and the atmosphere was okay, but I was expecting more. Plus, the prices were a bit hefty for what you get. "
