December 2011 — "What a perfect casual hangout! The meal options were either $5.55 or $10.55, which for lunch you can't beat. And the portions were more than generous. It was a wooden interior, and kept fairly clean. I ordered the mushroom and chicken fettucine, as did my friend. It was good, although the flavouring a little off for me. However, my friend loved it so much she cleaned her plate! The guys both ordered the buffalo burger, and both really enjoyed it. On top of this, they had a good drink menu, both beers and cocktails. Overall, this is a great place to hangout."

"NOT LIKELY TO RETURN..."

March 2010 — "...had enjoyed recent visits within past year, but felt recent 'trip' was a very disjointed experience from the moment I walked in with partner...our greeter was countered by another staffer about not seating us for some minutes (due to kitchen being recently slammed...), not very diplomatic towards a kitchen that turned to be the only highlight on this visit! Upon seating, had to wait several more min's just to be served water after we'd already tried to help our waitress by giving our simple order up-front, of 3 appetizers (prawns, crabcakes & flatbread with request for extra tapanade). Waitress claimed extra charge of 50 cents for the extra tapanade, but our bill later indicated $2 charge; slow refill on water & felt like everybody but our waitress actually tried to make effort in servicing (?) our table; was never queried on how our food was, no encouraging eye-contact/smile from what seemed like the only server--at 4 pm on a Sun afternoon! Very sorry to have to submit this, but feel others need to know what to beware of in future!"

"Never disappointed!"

April 2009 — "I have eaten at Fifth Street Bar & Grill on many occasions, and never left unsatisfied. Located on Hillside near Quadra Street Village, this busy restaurant is a popular favourite for neighbourhood residents. There is a pub on one side for the casual diner, and a traditional dining room for slightly more formal seating. Patios are offered on both sides, with the dining room version more of an intimate courtyard complete with fireplace. The restaurant features a wood-burning cookstove used to roast chicken and pizzas, which lends the entire establishment an inviting smoky smell. The same menu is offered, irrespective of which side you sit in. We chose the pub this day, which has LCD TV's mounted for those who wish to catch the game. Fifth Street has different beer specials every day, and my companion & I both had that day's features: 5th Street Lager and Beacon IPA for just $3.26 a sleeve. It's hard to choose from their menu, with many delicious options organized in price categories of $5, $10, $15, and $20. Portions are generous here, so even the "appetizer" priced items often serve as a meal. I ordered the Coconut Prawns, one of my favourites, while my partner had the Short Ribs. The prawns are served in a coconut curry sauce and surround a mound of crispy yam frites. The short ribs arrived thick and tender, with a hearty scoop of mashed potatoes and some steamed seasonal vegetables as accompaniment. We skipped our usual starters this time, but would recommend both the Dry Ribs and Seared Tuna from the $5 category. Other favourites include the house fire-roasted chicken and juicy but lean buffalo burger on the $10 menu. They often have fabulous specials on their fresh sheet as well. Fifth Street offers something for every taste, both in their food and ambiance. Great food at a great price!"

"Break from Christmas Shopping"

December 2008 — "My husband and I popped into this little warm welcoming neighborhood pub for lunch after doing some Christmas shopping. It seemed friendly and inviting to come in from the cold snowy outside. They even had a fire going in the wall fireplace out on the patio. We picked a tall round table with stools. The place was quite busy for a Sunday afternoon at 2pm. A big screen TV at one end of the seating area had a football game going with some avid fans cheering below. We were attended to quite quickly by a friendly waitress who got us drinks right away. My husband order a sleemans honey ale, and I ordered a glass of their house chardonnay which was Jackson Triggs. The food menu had definite priced selections divided up into $5 increments. Everything was $5, 10, 15 or 20. I saw some burgers and pizza go by and they looked very good. I read a blurb on the menu that said they prepare everything fresh so allow sufficient time for your meal to be prepped. So perhaps if in a hurry ask your server which items would be the speediest. We didn't want to much to eat that would spoil our dinner, so we each ordered the bowl of soup which was a roasted squash for $5. It came quickly and piping hot along with a wedge of focaccia bread. It was thick and delicious. We then shared the hot chicken almond salad for $10. The presentation was lovely with drizzled balsamic reduction glaze and pickled ginger on the side of the plate. It had some dressing on the salad and a side dish of extra dressing. It was all very tasty. It was the perfect amount of food. I didn't feel over stuffed. I would recommend this friendly and clean little pub for both the atmosphere and the quality of food served."

"Can't go wrong..."

September 2008 — "My wife and I went to Fifth Street Grill for dinner this past weekend. We arrived around six and were able to get a table in the restaurant without waiting (although it filled up quickly). I had the curry and prawn pasta, which was tasty, a little spicy and fresh. My wife had the chicken satay -- she said it was really good. The best part about this restaurant is the atmosphere: Relaxed, clean and cared for. I would recommend Fifth Street for a safe, well-prepared meal. Nothing groundbreaking here, but you really can't go wrong either."

"Busy neighborhood pub worth checking out..."

April 2008 — "We had actually attempted to got to the 5th St bar and Grill on one occasion previous to this, and were confronted with a long line and a substantial wait. It seems that it is a very popular place for a bite or pint on weekend evenings. Luckily, this time, we found ourselves looking for some pub food a little earlier on a Friday evening (around 5PM) and were able to get a seat immediately. I was in the mood for a burger and a beer, so that made ordering easy. I chose the Fire-Grilled Buffalo Burger with it’s house-made patty, barbeque sauce, cheddar, chipotle mayonnaise and fries, and dove into an after work pint while we waited for our order. One of the things that I think people find so appealing about the 5th Street Bar and Grill, is that the menu if divided up into 4 price categories. Menu items are either $5, $10, $15 or $20. You can what your budget is, and just hit that part of the menu. I didn’t even have to look past the $10 part of the menu, as there were plenty of things to choose from at that price range…from burgers and pizzas, to quesadillas, fire-roasted chicken and pork loin, there are tons of decent choices at a great price. Our food was served fast and hot, and the burger was really good. Great flavor and a thick patty and a fresh, tasty bun. Pretty much everything I look for in a pub burger. I’d have to say that we were impressed by the 5th Street. It’s got an atmosphere reminiscent of a chain restaurant like Earl’s or Moxie’s, but it’s neighborhood restaurant/pub…and it’s got a better menu and prices than the chains. I definitely see myself going back, whether it’s for appetizers and pints, another burger, or to try something new. Remember to hit it early on the weekend, or be prepared to brave the lines. "

BulletDescription

Located near downtown, this restaurant is unique in its menu items and pricing system- all dishes are either five, 10, or 20 dollars. There is a large selection of pizzas to choose from, all of which are 10 dollars and are original recipes. The ambiance of Fifth Street is fine yet relaxed, and a heated patio is open year round.
