"Fantastic but expensive steak experience"

March 2012 — "Billed as the best steak in town Ruth's Chris offers a fantastic fine dining experience for that special occassion or if you just feel like splurging 50 bucks on a steak dinner. It has one of the finest decors of any restaurant I have been to in Calgary and the service is also top notch however you are also paying a fine price for all that ambience and service. The interior of the restaurant evokes an older era with its big wooden chairs and plush booths. All the furniture and decor in the restaurant just looks expensive. There is also a big window opening out to Centre Street to the north so there isn't a bad seat in the house. We ordered a petite steak medallion with jumbo USA gulf shrimp. It came served on a sizzling platter with hot butter on top. One of the best steaks I've had and worth a trip if you're a fan of fine steak."

"Great steak and great experience!"

November 2011 — "The amazing smell of steak, made my mouth water from the moment I stepped in the restaurant. I ordered the Rib-eye med-rare, and it came out to me on a sizzling place and cooked perfectly. We shared a side of mushroom and potato gratin. We had a chopped salad as an appetizer. Everything was delicious, absolutely nothing to complain about. Food was great, as well as the service. We each had a glass of wine, recommended by our knowledgeable server and we loved it. They even paid for our parking. Our entire evening was perfect. "

"For those with healthy wallets"

April 2011 — "For a friends birthday part, we stopped by at Ruth's Chris on a Weekday night - Tuesday. Everyone always raves about how good their steaks are and it sounds like there are some hits and misses. I personally went a different route and ordered the crab cakes with a heaping dish of salad - their house special. If you were expecting what you saw on the website, it didn't look the same, but it was a big order. I enjoyed the crab cakes for sure though. Other than that, the food and the appetizers and sides that we ordered - mushrooms, fries, and some other type of cheesy dish was all pretty good, but nothing spectacular. It seems like on Wednesdays, there are some specials that you can go try if you are wanting to keep control of your wallet. The famous steak dishes though, are the real deals and what Ruth's Chris is known for. It was super good, especially compared to the special slices or pieces of meat that were ordered by one of my other friends. I'm sure it's good, but when the bill came, it was more of a wallet buster than anything. So, I thought it was good, but for that price, it definitely left something else to be desired for. "

"Perfect Steak"

April 2011 — "Just because it’s at the bottom of the Calgary Tower doesn’t mean Ruth Chris it doesn’t deserve the highest of praise. The restaurant chain has an excellent track record and our Friday night dinner was no exception. The atmosphere is elegant but not stuffy and the service was tremendous. Our staff was prompt and friendly. We both ordered steak medium and they were cooked to perfection. The starting salad was excellent as it was fresh and had a nice light vinaigrette dressing. For sides we chose mushrooms and green beans. The beans were crisp, fresh, and glowing green. Our dinner cost just over $30 before tip. The experience and cost was comparable to other high-end steak houses but Ruth Chris is near the top in my books. Parking can be a bit of a challenge if you want free parking. Otherwise, there is a pay parkade on the same block and another nearby."

"Not for me"

March 2011 — "My friends took myself and the boyfriend here for his birthday. This restaurant is at the bottom of the Calgary tower and more of an upscale restaurant. Or maybe I just don’t go to nice restaurants? Anyway, the service was very good. Our server immediately brought us drinks and explained the entire menu to us. I ended up ordering their filet which comes with a salad as well as a side. I chose the sautéed mushrooms. For my meal, the cost was $40. I had heard some great things about this place and was looking forward to my medium rare steak. Unfortunately, I was not too happy. The meat was somewhat dry and hard to chew. Oddly enough, my favourite part of the meal was the sautéed mushrooms. Then again, how can you go wrong on mushrooms? I hate to say it, but I probably won’t be back. I found that a regular chain restaurant’s steak was just as good, and still cheaper. It’s just as well I suppose."

January 2010 — "We tried to book for the dining room for 4 people but apparently closed for a private party, given the lounge option. Lounge is great for me as long as I don't have to sit there with children under the age of 18. This wasn't the case on Saturday evening. Shortly after we were seated, our drink order was taken. The waitress disappeared and came back 15 minutes later to ask if we wanted still or sparkling. We said still water and continued to wait for another 15 minutes for the drink order to arrive. Another 30 minutes and our order was taken (the closed menus mean nothing). I ordered NY Strip, medium rare. During our wait, our drinks were emptied and we ordered another round. Another 30 minute wait until the drinks came. No sign of the water either. My steak came and it was seared on the outside and blue on the inside. No one came back to ask how it was. If you can't order a steak the way you want it at 'the steak house' why bother to pay the extra price. I eat out at high-end restuarants often and this is the first I would suggest if you're looking for service, water or a steak cooked the way you like, you really should consider booking elsewhere. "

May 2009 — "I went to Ruth Chris for a special occasion with my wife and was expecting something special. When we entered the restaurant I was expecting it to be extraordinary, instead it was ordinary with a pretentious feel. Our server greeted us and he seemed like he was trying to be too perfect, a little more human-like would have been nice. We were asked by one of the staff members what kind of water we'd like, sparkling or still. Later when the bill came we paid $16 for water, should have just stuck to the wine. As far as the menu went, it was totally overpriced for a chain restaurant steak house. I have eaten at most of the best restaurants in Calgary and found the quality of everything we ordered to be very average and very, very expensive. Since you order the sides separately, my entree was over $70 and it was perhaps worse than even a run-of-the-mill trendy eatery entree at three times the price. I don't recommend ordering the Tbone, it is huge and tasteless and you can get a much better steak at one of the locally-owned steakhouses offering prime Alberta beef. The bill was over $300, without a bottle of wine, and for that price, there are tons of restaurants steps away on Stephen Avenue that offer a much better dining experience for much less. It didn't help that I became quite ill several hours later and all signs pointed to food poisoning. I won't be back, ever."

"Overpriced and Overrated "

May 2009 — "My husband and I decided to dine at Ruth's Chris Steak House for our anniversary since we had a $50 gift certificate and love both fine dining and steak. We knew that the $50 wouldn't cover much at all, but we quite often drop $200 or $300 on dinner in a nice restaurant. Upon arrival at Ruth's Chris we were promptly taken to our table. The restaurant is on the second floor of the Calgary Tower and wraps around the front of the tower in a semi-circle shape. We were in a booth in the aisle near the window and found it to be quite distracting, as it is a tight area and the serving staff was constantly walking by and nearly bumping our table every time. When we were seated we were offered still or sparking water. We opted for sparkling and were served a bottle of Pellegrino. Later we asked for more water and when we received our bill, saw that we were charged $16 for the water. When our server greeted us I ordered a glass of wine, while my husband had a beer. It took the server nearly three times to pour the beer properly - I stopped him from doing it a third time and said we'd take the beer with substantial head. It seemed like it was his first day on the job. He was nice though, even though the service throughout the meal was somewhat awkward. I started with the Ruth's Chop Salad, which was nicely presented in a cylinder stack. It wasn't anything to write home about though and I did not finish it. My husband had the onion soup and seemed to enjoy it, although I tasted it and did not think it was anything special. For our main courses I had the petite filet, while my husband had the Tbone steak. This is where the bill adds up, since you need to order all your sides separately. We had the au gratin potatoes, fresh broccoli, a baked potato and asparagus with hollandaise. On average, each dish was over $60 with potatoes and vegetables. My husband's was actually nearly $75. My steak was ok, but overcooked - I wanted medium rare, it was more like a medium. My husband's Tbone was huge and he could not finish it. The meat wasn't as tasty as many of the steakhouses and fine dining restaurants we have eaten at lately. In fact, I think it might have been the worst fine-dining steak I've had. For dessert my husband had bread pudding and I opted for a specialty coffee. When we were presented with the bill, it was $250. Not that bad for a nice dining experience, but for some reason I felt unsatisfied with the experience and found it to be lacking compared to many other restaurants in downtown Calgary - when you compare food quality and price. Unfortunately, about six hours after eating dinner, my husband became severely ill. All signs point towards food poisoning, which is even more disappointing because not only was it an expensive meal, we had to throw out all the leftovers! We contacted the Calgary Health Region to let them know and we also emailed the restaurant warning them that it was possible food poisoning - surprisingly, they never returned the email. Pretty unprofessional in my opinion, especially for a so-called fine dining establishment. We'll definitely dine elsewhere next time and will never eat at any Ruth's Chris again. "

"Fantastic Date Night Dinner"

February 2009 — "My husband and I went for dinner on Valentines Day and were very impressed. They had a restricted menu with options but there were so many choices it didn't feel limited at all. Each course was paired with a choice of two wines so the adventure was endless. It was a pricey dinner but all of our expectations were satisfied--and excellent service. It was a great place to go if you want everything to be perfect, and the price reflects that. But it is sooo worth it. I recommend the seafood gumbo appie and all of the steaks are delicious. "

January 2009 — "I was just at Ruth's Chris Steak House for dinner last night and it was excelent. It was the best steak that I have had in a while. I ordered the mixed grill plate (without butter). It was more food than I could eat for only $38 (included stuffed chicken, tenderloin and shrimp). The couple that we dinned with ordered the 'seafood feast' I don't think that I have seen such a spread in a while. It was a nice relaxed atmosphere with sincere and eager staff. I will be looking into this for our corporate stampede party this year."

"Mediocre all the way"

November 2008 — "Ruth Chris's does not have a good price/quality ratio. At all. The decor is nice - boring but very acceptable, and the wait staff was excellent. We had a small group lunch and the waiter gave the standard speech about the history of the steakhouse, and proceeded to explain how they only use corn-fed midwestern beef. HELLO? We are the land of excellent grass fed beef here. Cows don't eat corn. It's cruel to them and less tasty for us. There is a host of economic, ethical and political issues with corn fed beef and I kind of wanted to laugh, but refrained at his obvious pride at his spiel. On to ordering - I got a steak salad, my neighbor a steak sandwich with gumbo, and my other neighbor the mixed platter of chicken encrusted with blue cheese, a small steak, crab cakes and the previously mentioned fried tomato. My steak was perfectly cooked, very tender and since it rested on a bed of mushrooms did not overcook. It was drenched in previously mentioned butter and had that unmistakable 'off' flavor that US corn-finished beef has. To my taste buds it's a slightly sour undertone rather than the buttery beefy flavor I look for in aged AB beef. The salad was mediocre. Somehow the blue cheese dressing managed to be completely boring with salt as the dominant flavor, and did not mix well with crumbled eggs. My companion reflected that she prefers her gumbo with actual chunks of seafood, not tiny shreds; the steak sandwich was not open faced but stuffed into a thick roll/bun that was too much bread to steak; the proverbial 8.00 tomato was drenched in sugar and lacked salt, tang or garlic to even it out. It was literally a very sweet concoction sprinkled with a bit of parsley. Overall, Ruth Chris's food was entirely overpriced and rather bland, boring and mediocre. For good steak go to Saltlik or Vintage. They're a much better value and way more fun. "

July 2008 — "It was my friends birthday and we decided to treat ourselves to a 'fancy' lunch at the oddly named Ruth's Chris Steak House at the base of the Calgary Tower. The hostess was friendly and sat us at a cozy booth. It is a beautiful restaurant with big windows and classy decor (a big change from the old encana cafateria that was here before). My friend tried the Grilled Tenderloin and Portobello Mushroom Salad ($22), she said it was super tasty and it was more food than she could finish so she took some to go. I tried the Petit Filet and Shrimp and had a side of asparagus. The steak came to the table on a sizzling plate was buttery and hot till the last bite. They serve both Alberta and USDA Prime beef and I was pleasantly suprised at the sweeter taste of the USDA Beef. For dessert we shared the banana cream pie. It was huge and extra tasty with a carmalized brown sugar crust. The server was attentive and even gave us the dessert for free. I would definately come back to Ruth's Chris the portions are large and tasty and the service was great and the food was not as expensive as I had heard it was. Definately a must try experience - especially the Steak!"
