February 2012 — "I have lived in lethbridge most of my life and have never heard anything good about this resturant. I thought it could not be as bad as most people say. well having worked in the resturant feild most of my life, I can say id never go back. The place was clean and well kept but, the hostess seemed to have a lack of knoledge of the food after we expressed our lack of ever eating this style of food. She ran back to the kitchen and our chef??? ran out to explain our dining options. It was still hard to understand and after ordering a stale beer, and reading the menu (the first page of the menu gives very little but helpfull information) we finaly decided to order a for best accouts would br described as a platter. after about 45 min, out came a cold meal, if you could call it that; ive had more chicken in a 7 11 tacoquito. along side some peas and that were the consinstcey of baby food food. This was served on a platter, above a spongey sourdough crepe like substance wich was also cold. We also recieived more of the bread wich was also our utencles. We were expected to dip this bread in the lack of food served to us. After being deprived of fifty dollars for the two of us we quickly ran home to have a real dinner.. it seems to me this restruant runs on sympothy!!! definatly wont be back!!!!! "

"Unsatisfactory Experience"

January 2011 — "The astablishment seemed to be clean. Small but quaint about 9-10 tables. Washrooms where clean. The buisness did not meet or exceed our expectations. Our Party consisted of a group of 6 people. First off, reservations where made the day befor by leaving a message and that they would return and confirm them. No call was returned. I called back and confirmed our reservation the day of. Very poor parking. Very slow service. One server. We mentioned to the server it was our first time here, we did not understand the food, No explantion was offered. We where left to look over the menue. The astablishment was not full ... about half. From the time we ordered to the time we recieved our meal was just over an hr. Our water glasses where filled one time. The meal came and we where shocked! The lack of food. There was not enough to feed 3 people, let alone 6 adults! Not only was there a lack of food but we did not exspect what we where looking at. Small amounts of puree, and semi pureed food lay on top of a very thin crepe like substance. Also served to each of us, in a small plastic basket where 2 rolls of colorless, flat , rubbery, sticky crepe like substance , not too sure what to call it. You eat with this crepe like vinigary tasting substance by scooping up the runny items off of 2 ( 1 lrg & 1 small ) round white platters set in the middle of the table. We not once where approached during the meal to ask us how things where or to fill our glasses. After most of us where done and the scant traces of food where left on the platters , the server approached and asked if we needed more bread .... a few asked for some more water and I asked for the bill. Another table was served and then our water and bill came. There was not enough cash in the till to make change so debit had to be used. We left hungry, dissapointed and $75.00 less in our account. This would be an astablishment that I would certainly NOT recommend. I know that ''I" would be very hard to convince to ever try this food again. I would just like to add that we are not people hard to please and we love to try different types of cuisines. "

"A nice experience"

October 2008 — " We went to this restaurant with our friends who were visiting here from Hong Kong. What a neat restaurant! This restaurant is an Ethiopian restaurant that offers traditional food. We ordered 2 beef items, a chicken item and a lentils item to share between all of us. The gentlemen who was serving us (the owner I believe) showed us how to eat the food with the Injera, the bread sponge like crepe that is used in place of utensils. The food was all so tasty and had just the right amount of spice. The server was so friendly and kind and inviting. The restaurant is a small little restaurant that is very quaint and cozy. The atmosphere is relaxed and casual. We had an infant and a baby with us and although they did not eat the food, it was certainly acceptable to have them dine with us. The facilities here were all very clean and the restrooms were very clean as well. This is such a neat little restaurant and a great experience. I will definitely visit it again. "

April 2008 — "I'm so relieved that this place exists in Lethbridge. Just when I thought there was poor diversity in the restaurant and dining in this city, I was proved oh so very wrong! We were welcomed warmly by the chef/owner who struck me as a very kind and humble soul. He made us feel very comfortable in the relaxed atmosphere and recommended a dish (the number 9). All I can say is that it was Incredible! There is no better meal for your money in southern Alberta! "

"AMAZING FOOD!"

March 2008 — "Wow! I have been attending the university here for three years and had never heard of the Abyssinian Ethiopian restaurant here in Lethbridge. A friend mentioned that it was good food so another friend and I ventured out to find out for ourselves. I had driven by it a hundred times and never even noticed that it was there! Sure enough, a quaint little restaurant on the side of a busy street. The food was so great and the owner and his wife were so helpful and informative on how the food was prepared, the various levels of spice used, and how to eat the food, as there are no utensils! I really would suggest this restaurant to anyone willing to try some amazing cultural food right in our own little city!"

January 2008 — "From the friendly owners to the cool decor to the tasty food, everything about this Ethiopian restaurant in Lethbridge is great! I loved the stylish, yet low-key ambiance of the place and the fact that it represents traditional African fare and eating styles (ie no utensils). I will definitely go back when I'm next in Lethbridge. "

"African cuisine where you least expect it"

January 2008 — "It may be my perception of Lethbridge as an uninteresting plains city, which is now changing, but I did not expect to have something as unusual as Abyssinian dining available when I visited. Perhaps it is me that is a little naïve about cuisine outside of the big cities of Canada but this was a pleasant surprise. It was quiet because we arrived at 5.30 pm, but the host was very welcoming, recognized that we had not had the pleasure before, but made us feel at ease about our venture into the unknown. With six different spices in the berbere sauce that seemed to accompany many of the dishes it was very tasty. We were given a demonstration of how to pick up the curry style food with the large injera (moist sourdough pancake) accompanying the meal, as no utensils were offered. Eating with our fingers all added to the authenticity of the experience. I am looking forward to a return visit next time I visit Lethbridge. "

BulletDescription

Abyssinian serves authentic, delicious Ethiopian cuisine. A variety of thick stew-like meat dishes are offered, as well as plenty of vegetarian choices. Enjoy rich flavours that include cumin, basil, coriander, ginger, cardamom and much more. All this is served with injera, a large sourdough flat bread that has a lemony flavour.
