December 2009 — "I am not a big fan of buffets, being more of the "quality, not quantity" school of thought. Not that I don't like generous portions of tasty food, but rarely do I find both co-exist happily. This is especially true of Chinese food. May Gold Village may be the exception to this rule.
We were out in Langford running an errand, and decided to give May Gold a try based on the recommendations of some friends. You are confronted by their enormous buffet as you walk into the restaurant. I couldn't help but notice there was sushi at the front of the buffet cart, which immediately interested me. The restaurant was quite busy with workers of all walks enjoying lunch.
The buffet offered all of the usual Chinese food favourites, as well as a a few surprises. Besides the sushi selections (California roll, Dynamite Roll, Teriyaki Chicken roll and Salmon Roll), they had Rice with Steak Sauce reminiscent of Teppanyaki houses such as Japanese Village. Being one of many with an addiction-like craving for this sauce, I was thrilled to find it in this unlikeliest of places. While I wouldn't claim that any item was the best I had ever had, it was all pretty tasty. With a pretty full house of people to feed, the food was all very fresh as well. I certainly ate my $10 worth, and left satisfied.
