January 2012 — "After hearing good things about John's Place, I finally ventured over for a breakfast. Any restaurant spotlighted on the Food Network has a reputation to live up to. Collectively for our group, the meals did not disappoint. I chose the Belgian waffle, with bacon and eggs. It was indeed a very fluffy waffle, and their cream cheese syrup was delicious. My crew had the meatloaf and eggs, which was thoroughly enjoyed, and a variety of the eggs benedict were enjoyed. Evidently, as I don't drink coffee, I was advised that it tasted rather watered-down. My orange juice was rather overpriced, especially considering the size ( i ordered a large, and was very disappointed. The atmosphere was a homey feel, and was quite relaxing. Friendly, if slow service was provided to us and I'll be happy to hang out at John's Place again."

"AN INSITUTION IN VICTORIA"

December 2011 — "This little gem is located on Pandora Ave. in downtown Victoria. It has been a staple for the locals since 1984. What a fabulous place. Nothing special, simple decor with amazing photo's of locals and famous people adorning the walls who have enjoyed the food, service and ambiance of John's Place. The menu boasts all day breakfast with 10 infamous eggs benedict creations. The lunch and dinner menu are the same, with delicious sandwiches and wraps, wonderful appetizers, and dinner items, as well as their famous meatballs over homemade linguine and tomato sauce. I chose the chicken souvlaki with bacon and feta wrapped in a warm pita with tossed salad, my husband ordered the famous meatballs. While waiting we ordered apple cinnamon herbal tea. It just seemed the right thing to do on this cool winter evening. We were very pleased when our meals arrived. My wrap was huge, chock full of red onions, tsatziki, feta, grilled chicken and bacon. My salad was a cornucopia of greens and veggies, absolutely delicious. My husbands dinner was equally impressive. Being half Italian he is always looking for a better meal than he can get at home. The meatballs were exquisite. firm and very flavourful, the linguine perfectly cooked with homemade tomato sauce. A fantastic dinner for $27.00 tax included. A must to visit again, and again."

"Marginal at Best"

October 2011 — "I've been here about three or four times over the past couple of years -- and I regret it each time. It's overcrowded and the food is marginal as best. There are soooooo many excellent breakfast places in Victoria (Mo:le, Shine and Rebar to name a few) but this isn't one of them!"

"Breakfast heaven"

September 2011 — "My friend suggested we try this place while we are in Victoria because it is renowned for it's delicious breakfasts and I love going to funky spots to have breakfast foods, so it seemed perfect! Well, it was perfect. Not only was the short 30 minute wait (compared to Calgary breakfast places) awesome but the place was neat, the service was phenomenal and the food was divine! Our food took a while to come but in the mean time we had plenty of things to look at on the walls and a really accomodating, pleasant server. The food was worth the wait! I had the "222 Headeache" which included a fabulous belgian waffle, yummy sausage, pan potatoes and a wicked maple syrup cream cheese spread for my waffle. MMM!! The only crappy thing was the $3 for a juice, boo! Go visit John's!"

December 2008 — "I didn't particularly like the atmosphere (especially the music), the service or the food here. My hashbrowns were dead awful -- big, bland and dry -- and I pretty much wanted to leave the moment I sat down. I'm not sure why this place is so popular???"

"Great Breakfast!"

June 2008 — "Some friends of mine were in town for the weekend, and were hungry for breakfast. Seeing as how my wife is NOT a breakfast person, I thought this was the perfect opportunity to check out John’s Place and their cream cheese syrup that I’d heard so much about. The line was long, as it is with most popular breakfast joints in Victoria on the weekend, but we hunkered in for the long haul. It was worth the wait, as we were given coffee and fresh baked banana bread to keep our appetites at bay while we waited in line. We were seated about 20 minutes later (I told you the line was long), and we ordered right away. I went for the 222 Headache, a near perfect breakfast consisting of 2 pancakes (or a Belgian waffle if you are so inclined)with 2 eggs any style and your choice of two slices of grilled bacon or two link sausages or grilled Virginian ham. I substituted chorizo sausage for my meat, and made sure I was getting the cream cheese syrup for those pancakes, and we were good to go. With the $1.75 extra for the chorizo substitution, my total came to $12 with coffee…which I admit is a little pricey for breakfast…but I had no problem paying it for what I got at John’s Place. Seriously, great breakfast…nothing too fancy, but the cream cheese syrup (can’t mention this enough) and chorizo really put ’er over the top. Besides being really busy, the restaurant itself is comfortable and fun, with a retro diner feel and old movie/concert posters, etc as decoration. Definitely a place to hit for breakfast in Victoria…they have an extensive menu, but I honestly see myself just ordering the same thing again. I’ll be back for sure. "

"Good ol'fashioned food"

July 2007 — "Craving a hearty breakfast we hunted up and down the streets of downtown Victoria. All we could seem to find were hippy and healthy restaurants...but we wanted a serious breakfast not granola! Lo and behold we finally stumbled across John's Place and after stepping inside the crammed and busy entrance we figured this was the place to be. With walls covered in photographs, booths full of hungry patrons and the voices of regulars we happily ordered our meals. Our waitress was great, she had obviously been working there a long time and joked easily with us and made sure we had everything we needed. The meals arrived quickly and although there was one mix up it was quickly remedied. The food was filling and tasty. We would definitely head back for another meal the next time we are in Victoria."
