June 2010 — "Jumbo Dim Sum has turned into the "default" Dim Sum place for me and my friends when we have the urge for some Chinese brunch on the weekends. They have a decent menu with a large assortment of Dim Sum items, but it seems like there is a large accent on seafood. There seems to be shrimp in just about everything. Tons and tons of shrimp, which is great, because, well, personally I like shrimp, and Jumbo does a good job. The one thing I do wish they had more of was vegetable dishes on the carts. Most of the food is fried/deep fried/steamed, and it is lacking a bit of colour. Lots and lots of beige and brown foods on the menu, so they could use a bit more variety, but honestly there is plenty to choose from, and the items that are on the carts are excellent.
You get decent portion sizes, all flavored very well. Try the Shrimp dumplings, aka Sumai (not sure the correct spelling, pronounced Soo-My) and the absolutely delicious Curried Squid. (A quick tip, keep the bowl that the Curried Squid came in. The sauce is absolutely DELICIOUS and can be used on the sticky rice, or just about anything else for a bit more zing) The Steam Pork Buns are a huge hit, as is the deep fried squid. The sticky rice is also excellent. The onion cake is nice, and the custard tarts are a nice way to finish everything off. And for those that are a little more adventurous, the chickens feet are good, but try to get the curried ones. The plain ones are a bit bland.
The service there is adequate, if not spectacular, but your glass stays full of water and the teapot stays hot. Empty steam dishes get removed from your table quickly, so the best way to describe the service there is "workmanlike", they get the job done quickly and efficiently.
The price for the dishes is also excellent, and you won't find a better deal for a-la-cart Dim Sum in the city. As with any Dim Sum, larger groups work better so you get a larger variety, but expect to pay about $12 per person, and for your money you will get fed very very well. Also nice, it seems as if Jumbo does NOT use MSG, so those with bad reactions can take heart in the knowledge they'll be able to sleep that night!.
The ambiance in the restaurant is adequate. It's not fancy at all, (probably largely due to the "get them in and out quickly" nature of most Dim Sum places) but it is bright and mostly pretty clean. There is no fancy statues or aquariums, just a lot of tables for friends to gather and enjoy a good nosh. There are also much larger tables for groups of 10 to 12 if you have a large group. Parking is also ample either in front of the building or on the service road nearby. The bathrooms however could use a bit of a scrubbing though.
One quick tip, the door coming in is quite narrow, so when you leave, you are best to go out the back door so as not to trip over people in line coming in.
All in all Jumbo is probably the best "go to" Dim Sum place in the city. You'll get fed well for a good price, and the experience will leave your belly happy. I will definitely return, and return again and again."
