June 2010 — "I adore this restaurant both downstairs with my children and upstairs with my friends!
The filet mignon au gratin is to die for!
I enjoy having a nice swanky meal with my hubby or just loading up on the killer choice of appetizers with friends over cold stella and my fav the candy apple martini which is like heaven in a very cool shaped glass.
The service here is hands down the best in the city.
I would recommend ( and i do on a daily basis) Halo to anyone!
The ambiance makes it a great date night!
Halo is a GEM!"
December 2009 — "Reserved a table for our 14th Wedding Anniversary and when we arrived we were escorted to a table far in the corner away from the central fireplace. We were greeted by a waitress with her midriff showing and a belly button ring. … not too classy. The service was not the best, food mediocre, and the final cost was foolish. We were totally disappointed as we thought that this would be a more up scale establishment."
October 2009 — "After making reservations a week in advance for the dining room - we were seated by a man who put us next to a window in a very tight booth. There were many tables empty including one by the fireplace and when we asked to be moved he said No - that is reserved. Not wanting to make a fuss we stayed put but were not impressed with him or his lack of trying to make the customer happy.
That experience was negative but the server we had made up for it and the food was good."
June 2009 — "It was a wonderful dining experience for my husband and I. The service was excellent. The staff was very helpful with suggestions and explanation of the menu. We also felt relaxed to enjoy our dinner. I had the Prime Rib and he had the baby back ribs. The ambience suited the type of menu. Quality of the food was good but a bit pricy - not one that many could afford to enjoy frequently. Overall, it was enjoyable and I will definitely go back."
November 2008 — "We have been to Halo several times over the past two years. The food is always good, but at times is absolutely exceptional! This was one of those times. Try the Sambuca Prawns - one of my favorite. The steaks are absolutely great - tasty (don't need to salt them because they are full of flavour). Try the Cappacino Gelato - YUMMY!!!! We always enjoy the personal service, great food & ambiance of this restaurant. Good for anything from a personal, romantic meal to a birthday celebration or just dinner with family or friends. Great wine list, this is definately one of my favorites! "
November 2008 — "Living in the south, our selection is either specialized and limited...what a refreshing change. I met with a girlfriend for lunch, and not only was the decor comfortable, the staff was fanastic, we both enjoyed our meals, and spent a few hours comfortably catching up, without ever feeling that we had overstayed our welcome. As the winter approaches, I would find Halo's more favorable, as it has the cozy and comfort astomphere of a ski lodge. I would highly recommend Halo's for it's customer service if nothing else.

October 2008 — "We were at Halo just a few days ago. We were very impressed with everything from the decor to the food to the value. There are few restaurants that serve such big portions of obviously home cooked food. The food was good value for money and the mini yorkshire puddings were out of this world! Overall we were were very impressed. "
September 2008 — "We went to Halo as a group for a birthday and found the restaraunt was clean and the staff friendly. Being a large group, we had the bills separated to couples and individuals. It was a surprise to see 15% gratuity autoatically added, but that's the policy on groups, even though our bill was only for two people.
The food we ordered was not very good. Our scallops were overcooked and rubbery, and the Halibut was bland. The portions are also quite small considering the overpricing of their meals.
Bottom line is that you can get better food and a better price at some of the chain restaraunts around town."
February 2008 — "My wife and I used to go to the Bull and Finch and now we go to the Halo. The staff is very friendly and fun, the food is unique and tastey, and the wine list fairly extensive. There are 3 fireplaces you can ask to sit by for nice atmosphere. We go at least once a month."
January 2008 — "Restaurant was 20% full on Sunday evening and we should get conserned, but...
Room is clean, but cold! Several ladies were wearing they coats. Food is overpriced. Quality of food is terrible. T-Bone steak we ordered smelled as rotten meat. Even it was taken from our bill, manager did not accept that steak was stinky.
Will never again come to this place."
December 2007 — "I took 3 guests to the restaraunt. We had an excellent meal with excellent service. It was dark outside and almost as dark inside. When the bill was presented I offered my creditcard. It was authorized and returned to the table for signature. There was an "ample space" for tip on the returned form. It was a great meal so I offered a generous tip. A few days later, when I looked at the bill again, I noticed that a tip had automatically been entered into the bill but because of the very poor lighting and faint numbers on the invoice, I had not noticed. Had I noticed I had already included a 15% tip, I would certainly not have provided the hefty sum that I gave for the second tip. I did not complain when I later discovered the "trick" but I have not returned since. And I have told several people to watch carefully if they ever decided to go there. What was gained by the second tip was more than lost in what would have been repeat business. Everything else was great and I entertain guests regularly. I felt "taken advantage of". Except for the lack of light, (even the menu was difficult to read) the ambience was excellent. Washroom was very clean... too dark to notice in the main restaraunt area.... it looked good."
Management Response:
"Vickie, I am so happy that everything was perfect, but I am disappointed to know that a tip was put on your bill. Halo only puts an automatic gratuity on parties of 15 or more. However, there are coupons in circulation under a company called SMART CIRCLE, that do offer a discount on the bill, however there is an automatic 18% gratuity added to the bill before the discount. Halo does not print those coupons, nor do they receive any money from the sales of them. This is an independant company, and Halo only honours the coupons and follows their rules.
If a server added the gratuity on your bill, I will gladley refund it. I would rather have you as a guest, then make you mad over something we can fix. Also, please note that the servers keep all of their tips, besides the money they give to the support staff. Halo doesnt benefit at all from guests providing extra tips (except for extra happy staff!).
I have also taken into consideration the lighting and have made steps to improve it.
I hope you do come back and try us again, I would love to make up for the confusion and hopefully recieve another great review from you and your friends!

"Nothing Heavenly Here!"

September 2007 — "Our server was great and the atmosphere was nice however our food suffered greatly. In fact only one of the four of us dining enjoyed our meal; she was the only one who expressed any desire to come back again and it was followd by "maybe for drinks".
This is my second time here since the name change yet only the first review as I do not like to be negative and prefer to give the benefit of the doubt. I hope I have the resolve to not come back again. It was a a huge let down both times. I have rated the "Value for Money" as poor; as I hate paying for a meal I will not eat!
Again the service was awesome and the atmosphere was nice... the kitchen brought the rating way down. I would come back for a drink if invited, but never for a meal.
Service - Awesome
Atmosphere - Nice
Food - Below Average "
September 2007 — "Excellent service. Great food, what more can you ask for. My wife and I have been coming here for the last couple months and have always been happy with the service and menu selection. A little different if you are expecting a pub atmosphere like it's predecessors The Bull and Finch, but noticeably cleaner with a more modern interior. Great wine list as well. Haven't been dissapointed yet. "
June 2007 — "I thought the barley mill was once again a pub, but it is a nice cozy place to have a great meal. I had the halibut, and my boyfriend had the rack of lamb. The meals were fantastic, our server was Sara and she was great. The place has been renovated, and has a fancier look, but it is casual in there and the staff made us feel welcome in our jeans and sandals! We both had a fabulous martini off the martini menu and then a nice bottle of wine priced at $40. Our meal with app's (prawns were great!), entree, drinks and dessert was about $120 and worth every penny. We will be back."
May 2007 — "My husband and I found ourselves looking for a place to have a good dinner in south Calgary on a Saturday night. We decided on Halo as it is close to home and we were curious as to what had become of the old Barley Mill that is now painted a not so subtle shade of purple. The interior looks similar to the previous pub with a few touches to make it appear more modern. For dinner my husband had the fillet mignon and I had the Mediterranean salmon. Both meals were good but not anything that will make us run back. Worth coming back for though is the ice cold Stella on tap! Maybe next time we will just stop by for a beer and wings."
