July 2011 — "I went to Sumo restaurant in Eau Claire and I was not very impressed with the sushi or service there. The service was slow even though the restaurant seemed quite empty and the sushi did not taste fresh. I am not sure where our waitress went. There is definitely better sushi out there for the same price or even for a better price.
The one thing I did like about Sumo was their patio which sits in the middle of Eau Claire so you can people watch while you eat. It's not too small either so you have room to eat comfortably. I am still willing to give this place a second chance as I've only been there once and hopefully it will be better next time or I might try another location. However, for now, be prepared to wait awhile for your food and don't expect the sushi to be amazing! "

July 2010 — "The SUMO Grill Japanese Restaurant is located in the Northeast, pretty much right in the Sunridge Mall. I walked past the restaurant when I was in the mall, and conveniently saw the afternoon specials that they had and decided to give it a try. Once settled in a booth, I looked over the pricy menu. Their selection was no different than a dozen other Japanese restaurants, but was more expensive than I expected. They did have a nice afternoon menu that allows you to choose 2 out of about 12 choices of tempura, or chicken and or beef teriyakis for 10.95 and sushi and sashimi (for an added $1 for each one). Tricky! I decided to take the cubed beef with onions dish and sashimi. The meal came with miso soup, which was very tasty, and salad (the dressing is alright, but had a stinger hint of ginger) I was a little disappointed to find that the beef was not really cubed. It was less appetizing than I had imagined for sure and it was a bit spicier than I would have liked, but all in all, I enjoyed my stay here. For something in the area, I would go back next time. "

February 2010 — "I stopped by Sumo for lunch with a friend on a weekday. This restaurant is located inside Sundridge mall on the west side. This was my first time going to the restaurant. It's actually really nicely decorated with modern Asian decor. The restaurant itself is quite big and has a good range of seating for all parties. I decided to order a regular lunch bento box with sushi and teriyaki chicken. The meal also came with soup, salad and rice for 11.95 plus tax. The food was generally pretty good. The sushi was decent but had a bit too much rice to fish ratio. The teriyaki chicken was delicious and the soup was hot. The salad was normal. Overall, it was a good meal and I was pretty full. The service was average but the atmosphere in the restaurant is quite nice. I would highly recommend this restaurant for a lunch stop. "

August 2009 — "A friend and I recently tried out Sumo for sushi at lunch as it is conveniently located close to work. We were lucky to make a reservation as this hot spot fills quickly around noon. The restaurant sports a typical yet modern Asian decor and also has a sunny patio, although I'm not too sure how I feel about eating my sushi in the summer heat. We ordered the assorted tempura which came with prawns and vegetables, they were served hot and crispy and met my expectations are far as tempura goes. We also ordered an assortment of sushi, California rolls, dynamite rolls, steamed prawn and raw salmon, all of which I found somewhat disappointing. Maybe it's because their lunch rush is so busy and people don't have time to sit around and wait, but our sushi did not taste very fresh and was likely made hours in advance. The service was however very fast and we were in and out in less than an hour. Overall, I might go back if I need a quick fix of sushi at lunch but would not choose this place for a nice dinner."

June 2009 — "Best sushi I have ever had!!!! The sushi they have is unique and well made. Especially the black dragon sushi they have is delicious. I brought my friend there and he hates sushi but when I ordered the black dragon sushi he just kept on eating it and, he wants to go back
to this restaurant. It's hard enough to even get him in a sushi restaurant so this proves this is the best sushi restaurant in town. "

The sushi is fresh and made to order which is an added plus, and for people with a hearty appetite the sushi is portioned perfect, not too big but not small at all.This restaurant is truly in the number one spot on my list of calgary's best sushi restaurants."

November 2007 — "My wife and I discovered this great Japanese restaurant about a year ago. We have returned to enjoy the ambience, the great staff and the clean surroundings, as well as the variety of food offerings, many times. We most always order too much as the sushi and the sashimi is great, as well as the formal dishes under full headings of "Teriyaki" with 6 combinations and the boats, bento boxes and bridge. We quite enjoy the quaintness and the politeness of the staff, who are always attentive to our needs and pleasant to talk to. They show a respect for the customer that is unusual in today's food industry. We highly recommend Sumo to our friends and anyone who enjoys Japanese. We thought the food prices were well with reason.

May 2007 — "The restaurant was very clean and had a very good atmosphere, but as soon as the food came when we ordered, I was quite dissapointed. The food was well prepared, but not enough to meet the high prices on the menu. There were abundunt choices of drinks, but all were, again, more expensive than usual restaurants.
The staff service was quite poor, as they did not smile or make our group of people feel welcomed. As well, when we were out to pay, I had not brought enough cash, so I had to do a half debit half cash pay. At this moment, the waitress acted very mad and it even seemed like the waitress was "worried" that I didn't have enough money to pay for the meal. On the debit machine, when I asked "What is this?" when you are supposed to punch in the amount of tips, the waitress was very mad (again) and said "THAT'S THE TIPS." Ok, so that's the tips. You don't have to be so rude to me.
One time my friend ordered take out from Sumo. He arrived at Sumo at the time that the staff said that it would be all ready. Sadly, he had to wait an extra fifteen or thirty minutes before he actaully got his food.
Overall, service was bad, and it costs WAY TOO MUCH MONEY. "
