"Modern Diner with a Classic Feel"

Save Review

April 2011 — "Brunch was so good that we went back the next day! We found this little diner close to our hotel through a random internet search. Having never heard of the Blue Plate Diner, we expected a breakfast similar to what you would find at a local gas station restaurant—perhaps the usual bacon and eggs or pancakes. However, we were quite pleasantly surprised at the amazing selection of homemade, unique twists on the classic menu. You can still get your fresh, hot buttermilk pancakes or your sunny-side up eggs with bacon, toast and homestyle potatoes made perfectly as your ordered, but you can also get items like a Breakfast Burrito or Ranch Eggs. All menu items can be catered to those with food allergies or restrictions and they offer many options to make your meal vegetarian or vegan. They also have kids items on the menu. The service was outstanding and everything came within a perfect amount of time so that you knew it was indeed fresh and made to order, but you also can go in hungry and not be starving by the time you get your food. The diner has a wonderful atmosphere to enjoy conversation or read a book as you eat. The prices are fantastic and range from $5 to $15. Highly recommended!"

"Pushy Staff"

Save Review

June 2010 — "I love this restaurant. I've been to Blue Plate Diner at least a a few times, when I go to Edmonton to visit my Grandma. The decor, music, and atmosphere are old-school with a modern twist. They always accommodate my needs and my food always come the way I ordered. Most of the staff really have no problem when you put in a special order and change around sauces, pasta's add or remove this here and there. But some of the staff get a little bit rude when you try this on them. There are two down-sides to this establishment: One- parking is terrible, plan ahead and car pool or leave your car at home if you can or you will be wandering for hours. Two- some of the staff are pushy, rude, and impatient. Like I mentioned before if you do anything that makes them work for a tip or go out of their way for your comfort then they will be unhappy with you. When I come across someone like this I simply ask to move to another servers section because 'there is no manager' when I ask to speak to one. Don't let the two negative comment prevent you from trying this tasty down town treat and decide for yourself. I know ill be back again and again, and so should you!!! "

"Maple-Glazed Corn Bread a Must Have"
Image

Save Review

October 2009 — "Whether you are at the Blue Plate Diner for brunch, lunch or dinner, the maple-glazed corn bread is a must with your meal. It takes a special touch to make corn bread exciting, and this beautiful combination of textures and flavors is no exception. One side of the triangular loaf has a sticky glaze of sweet syrup that compliment the grainy texture of the bread. At brunch it comes with a healthy bowl of fresh fruit, and washes down delightfully with a cup of aromatic Chai. For other occasions it can enhance your meal as an appetizer or side, and is perfect for dipping the sauce from your mac-n-cheese! The atmosphere is cute and adorned with local influence, giving an excellent small diner feel. Service was quick that mid morning; however line-up by the hostess stand quickly grew. Even if the food doesn’t catch your attention, the colorful decorations will keep your eyes occupied! "

"Great"

March 2009 — "I have been going to this restaurant for three years, and I love it. I have been there for brunch, lunch and dinner and have always had an enjoyable experience; however, I would agree that the menu could be updated. Having said that, I like knowing I can always go there for a great burger and fries. Also love the Chicken Club sandwich with a caesar salad. "

"Interesting if pricey casual meals"
Image

Save Review

August 2008 — "The food here is fairly creative and tasty, and offers some interesting choices. The last time I had a meal there, I ordered the salmon with spicy tomato chickpea sauce, rice and grilled veggies coming in at $18. The salmon was prepared excellently, cooked just to flaking so that the fish remained moist and tender. The veggies were nicely grilled and were tender crisp and not overly seasoned or buttered. The pros: BPD does a lot of good dishes for vegetarians, and while I don't particularly like their veggie burger, some of my friends swear it's the best in the city. I enjoy their mac and cheese with salad, it's a good comfort meal on a colder day. The restaurant itself is a casual and eclectic space, comfortable and airy in the summer and is conveniently located near the new Sobey's downtown. The cons: The prices are really getting up there... although everything in this city is, I suppose. The menu items range from about $12 to $20 for mains, and while the portions are ample, the prices still seem steep for a casual diner."

"overpriced, mediocre food, poor service"

January 2008 — "I have been to the Blue Plate Diner on a regular basis over the last few years, mostly because of its close proximity to where I live and work. I have to finally admit to myself that it is not worth even the minimal effort of a 3 block walk. The service is inconsistent- brunch service (if you sit in the right section) is great, but the service at lunch and in the evening can be dreadful. The food is slow, cold, burnt, or simply prepared incorrectly, on a regular basis. The prices (yes, $15 for a hamburger, although that is a great hamburger) are particularly incomprehensible on the dinner menu, for the portion and quality you receive. And, as someone else has already mentioned, the menu has been the same for a long time. Actually, they just recently "changed" it. Unfortunately they only slightly adjusted most of the items that were already there. All in all, you can luck out there sometimes and order the right thing, at the right time of day, from the right server, and have a nice experience. The odds are somewhat stacked against you though, sadly."

"Needs a menu change "

January 2008 — "I love the decor of the Blue Plate Diner, art work, music ect. I feel very comfortable and welcome there. The decor makes you feel relaxed. I found the service very shoddy. I was very supprised to see that the menu had not changed much in three years. The place was not busy but it seemed to take forever to get our food. When the food finaly came out it was luke warm, we were too hungry to send it back. The food was below average for the high prices and small portions. $15 for a hamburger? What is that all about? I would not return."

"Great place."

November 2007 — "We went for Sunday brunch and were very impressed with everything at this trendy, retro, cozy little diner. It was busy (always a good sign), but the wait was under 10 minutes for a table. The decor is fantastic, I love the mis-matching coffee mugs from the 1970's and the tables and chairs that don't match. Art work (I assume local) decorates the walls, and each table has a different lamp on it. The service was phenomenal, especially for how busy it was, and the food was out to our table very quickly. We tried the Florentine Eggs Benny and the Breakfast Burrito. Both were fantastic. The burrito was very fresh, with what tasted like home-made salsa on the side. And the benny was tasy, if not just a little cold. Overall, this is a great place, and we can't wait to try it for dinner. "
