May 2011 — "Japanese Village is a little awkward to locate, but it was great when my friend and I chose it before seeing a show at the Royal Theatre...it's great walking distance from there. The restaurant is tightly packed, so not huge points on atmosphere. It is divided into two sections...apparently they also have a steak side...but you wouldn't know that until you are already inside. Our service was attentive, and they did provide me a fork, without any slight mocking of not being able to use chopsticks. There was a good amount of variety on the menu, so I picked and chose a few different ones. All were good. However, the house soy sauce was somewhat too salty. My pop disappointed me because with all the ice it was half a can, cost $2.25 and there were no refills. The restaurant also had a $10 minimum bill per person, however many of their dishes cost less than that. Overall, I would return to Japanese Village."

April 2011 — "Japanese Village on Broughton Street is a fantastic restaurant that is off the beaten path of the downtown restaurant area, but once you know where it is you’ll never forget. I was able to order a bowl of fresh rice and steak sauce along with a small side salad to go as I was working and I’m happy to know that I am able to order a quick dish to take with me. When I walked into the restaurant I was greeted by the very friendly and helpful host and she was very knowledgeable of the menu and while I waited for my order, I noticed how busy the restaurant was getting on a Saturday evening. I love their sushi selection and they are well known for their Teppanyaki dining, what a great dining experience! I love watching our meal prepared right in front of us. I highly recommend Japanese village for either a solo meal or fun and interactive dining experience. "

February 2011 — "Japanese Village is always a great experience overall. I have been there many times over the years and have never had a bad thing to say. The meals each come with miso soup or salad, then rice, stir fried veggies and your choice of meat. You are typically seated with other groups, were 8 people sit around a teppan-grill. Depending on the chef that you get, it can be a real experience, as some seem to really be having a good time. They will often be cracking jokes and tossing food and knives around, quite the spectacle. You also receive small dipping sauce dishes with steak sauce and a ginger sauce, depending on your protein, and these are to die for. I often find myself eating an extra bowl of rice, just to have a reason to get more of this sauce into me! The cost is also reasonable for what you are getting, I think its about 20 per plate for dinner, closer to 12 for lunch- which is essentially the same meal. If you haven't been to a Japanese Village- this is a must!"

November 2009 — "The Japanese Village is in downtown Victoria. Parking is a little bit of a challenge but there are parking lots nearby. We were meeting someone there who was a little late which disrupted the seating plan of the restaurant. We wanted to sit with the chef and because they seat you in groups of 8 the other party had to wait for us. My friend did show up but was 20 minutes late and the waitress was very anxious about it. When he did arrive they were quick to get things started. The cook was very good and had a great sense of humour. He immediately picked out one of my daughters for some banter and everyone had a good laugh. The food was excellent. We all had chicken dishes. The quantity of food was just right and we left there feeling very well feed and happy. I would take the family there again. The restaurant is a little dark but lots of fun."

September 2009 — "I have to admit, I love Japanese and I've been spoiled by great sushi growing up in California. I've been trying different sushi places around downtown Victoria and this was the first time going to Japanese village because I had heard other people rave about it. I think they must have been talking about the teppan grill area which I didn't go to, and that's where you get the show. For the sushi area, it's a small intimate dining room with a sushi bar and tables. I liked the decor and furniture which made the room feel comfortable and cozy. I would say it's the coziest of the sushi places I've visited thus far. We ordered a bunch of the specialty sushi where there are 3-5 things inside the roll--village roll, dynamite roll and California roll. The village roll was waaaayy to big and falls apart when you eat it (it's ways too big to put in your mouth). They used too much rice with their sushi which in my opinion, makes the sushi experience worse. The waitress was really friendly, I would say, friendlier than at your average Japanese restaurant (in Victoria). I had the lamb pizza and I enjoyed it for the most part. The pieces of lamb, although graciously large, made the pizza slices a little difficult to eat. The 4 of us shared the dessert sampler plate which we all practically inhaled. They have a fairly large beer and alcohol menu so when you come back, you can often try something new and different."

"Unique Japanese dining experience"

May 2009 — "Japanese Village has long been one of my favorite restaurants in Victoria. The only teppanyaki grill on the island, it offers a unique eating experience and really good food. Guests have a choice of eating at the sushi bar or at the grill. Although the sushi is some of the best in the city, we chose the grill this day. The teppanyaki menu offers chicken, steak, salmon and shrimp as options, as well as combination's of these. We both had chicken & beef, with a side of Yaki-yaki shrimp. All meals include a choice of soup or salad, complimentary rice and stirfry vegetable sides. What makes this so notable is that all your food is cooked on a large grill right at your table by an entertaining chef. Besides the sheer novelty and amusement factor, I enjoy seeing my food prepared in front of me. You are never in doubt as to how well it's prepared, and what goes into your meal. Meats and vegetables are grilled with a minimum of fat and sauces, and served piping-hot onto your plate. Depending on the chef you get, you may well also get a show while you wait for your food. Steak is prepared to order, and my medium was perfect. The chicken was tender and juicy, and the shrimp served in a tasty Japanese mayonnaise accented with fresh lemon. What keeps people coming back for more, though, are the sauces. Every customer gets a small dish of ginger sauce for dipping chicken & veggies into (and is especially delicious with the bean sprouts), but it's the sesame-based steak sauce that people beg for not only as an accompaniment to the beef but as a condiment on rice. Many people stop by Japanese Village daily just to get the rice with steak sauce as take-out, and rumor has it that outrageous offers have been made to secure their house recipe for this distinctive mixture. This is an excellent venue for a group meal, since there is a social aspect to the table arrangements of 8-10 people around each grill. If you should happen to come on your birthday, their staff is happy to regale sumo-clad guests with a song & photo. "
